The genre of "goth" music is new to me and I'd like to look into it further. More specifically music like Bauhaus or the stereotypical goth rock with the low voice. Could any of you throw out some band names?

Joy Division is considered as the godfather of "goth"

    Sisters Of Mercy
    Siouxsie and the Banshees
    The Cure (Their older stuff)

Lots of old school goths like Dead Can Dance but thats 'New Age'

I know that the Cruxshadows are fairly well known.

Joy Division are my life. Hail Ian Curtis.

I think Christian Death is one but I've never listened to them.

Op, what made you interested in knowing some bands? Are you working on a story?

He looks so funny when he's singing. I remember a friend of mine showed me a video of in with jazz playing on the back ground and it was less disturbing.
    >> Anonymous 01/02/09(Fri)00:20:09 No.2627718
Tiamat and Paradise Lost are a bit of orright.
    >> Anonymous 01/02/09(Fri)00:21:40 No.2627726
Christian Death, early Cure, early Fields of the Nephilim, The Birthday Party, and Xmal Deutschland are a few early goth/post punk/death rock bands worth checking out.
    >> Anonymous 01/02/09(Fri)00:22:30 No.2627730
my 50 y/o dad listens to joy division, we had the original vinyl of unknown pleasure. Damn, should've grabbed it before it sold it off lol
    >> Anonymous 01/02/09(Fri)00:23:49 No.2627740
Marilyn Manson is also on of the first goth bands, Blahaus kinda suck IMO

I would have paid a shitload for that, best album of all time.

I think he was a genuine Aspergers. There's a quote from Hooky in Touching From A Distance (the biography wrote by Deborah Curtis) saying that the police said he was a textbook case of a schizoid depressive. Schizoid personality disorder is very similar to Asperger syndrome, especially in the cases of higher intelligence, plus the fact that Asperger Syndrome wasn't defined until the year after Curtis' death. His unnerving gaze and awkward dancing scream autism however.

Writing a story? Huh? No, I'm just an audiophile who is a little burnt out on extreme music. I mean, I go and buy this experimental black metal music and there's no lyrics in the insert. I can understand what some of those guys are screaming some of the time, but I usually don't mind if I at least have access to the lyrics. Whatever statement they're trying to make about nihilism and nothingness doesn't need to extend to omitting lyrics. No one would hold it against them.

Back to my original statement: I'm just trying to explore some new musical genres and the goth subculture/genre has always had a romantic appeal. I hope I used the word romantic right.

    You also need:

    .45 Grave
    Nosferatu
    Clan of Xymox
    ALIEN SEX FIEND (fuck yes)
    Sexgang Children
and definitely the early Cure. Try the album "Pornography" to see what I'm talking about.

    Some that I like:

    Velvet Acid Christ
    Ohgr
    Project Pitchfork
    Legendary Pink Dots
    Wolfsheim
    Dead Can Dance
Depeche Mode (in case you haven't been out of your house in the past 20 years, they are good)
    Zeromancer

Early Cure and Siouxsie and the Banshees are also good. If you like the 80's and Joy Division, you might like Echo and the Bunnymen too.

None of this is goth music. This is all INDUSTRIAL. Completely different genre.
    >> Anonymous 01/02/09(Fri)00:39:52 No.2627866
Also, fuck /mu/ and their "rivethead garbage" labels. Those kids are almost as bad as some of the dipshits I ran into while I was in college.
    >> Anonymous 01/02/09(Fri)00:40:25 No.2627871
    >>2627860
I don't think Dead Can Dance is industrial, but it looks like you just copied and pasted, so that's okay.
    >> Anonymous 01/02/09(Fri)00:40:32 No.2627872
Buck-Tick is a good Jrock goth band
Also good are Cinema Strange, Clan of Xymox, Rozz Williams works (early Christian Death, Shadow Project, solo stuff with Gitane Demone).

Some new romantic stuff falls under goth too like Visage and Classix Nouveaux. Dead Can Dance's early stuff is really amazing in terms of originality in the goth scene. If you're into the punkier side of goth (deathrock) i'd give Specimen, Samhain, or even Mephisto Waltz a listening.

Also try Tones on Tail (Daniel Ash's work after Bauhaus) and Mighty Sphincter's album "In the Kingdom of Heaven"

Meh. At least I took out Depeche Mode.
But yes, Dead Can Dance is just some folky crap like Unto Ashes.
    >> Anonymous 01/02/09(Fri)00:43:55 No.2627900
OP here. I should mention that I already have every Dead Can Dance album. I'm already familiar with gothic industrial. That stuff is very hit or miss with me. I'm looking for something with a little more emotion, be it rock oriented or somewhat new age.

When I go to the shows, the people there are pale and dressed in black. I don't know what the difference between what these stupid labels are and I don't care.

Get the stick out of your ass.
