    hello dear robot,

At university I have settled in fantastically well, and am at quite a social university too. There is however one boy who hasnt settled in very well at all. He gets mocked quite often to his face, made to do things he wouldnt usually do etc etc. It's not full scale bullying but it is pretty bad, indeed he usually seems quite upbeat. Now this person is however very annoying, he just asks questions to you all the time, and his personal hygene is awful, so I dont particularly want to befriend him.

Should I ignore it, or do something about it?

What sort of adult does this shit?
Anyway, if you don't like him, don't fucking worry about it.

this is 18 year olds, and the mocking takes place while drunk. And I suppose I don't really like him, but he hasnt done anything to anger me and he's never tried to annoy me- so shouldnt I feel some sort of responsibility?

Let the boy stand up on his own two feet.

I say you pull him aside and talk to him. Just be friendly to him, show him that not everyone is a complete asshole.

No. 1) He probably deserves it. 2) Being associated with him could impose social costs on you. 3) He's not your responsibility anyway.

Nah, just everyday normal people. People Loooove to make fun of each other. a touch of sadism is in everyone's heart.

If you don't believe me, watch a slapstick comedy and don't smile.

were any robots out of interest ever in the position where they were mocked like this often by the people they tried to associate with?

Thinking back, what would you have loved to happen?

Deserves it? No one "deserves" to get taunted, mocked, and bullied just because they don't fit in. Just think if you were that kid, wouldn't you want a little bit of back up?

I say just tell them the guys to stop making themselves look like idiots and go have another drink. or two.
    >> Anonymous 01/01/09(Thu)22:37:06 No.2626891
OP, have you ever thought of the fact that "bullying" can actually be misinterpreted banter? Not all mocking is necessarily antagonistic...

no no no, it's a nice thought but it's just not the case. It is piss taking of large proportions and everyone knows it is.
    >> Anonymous 01/01/09(Thu)22:48:06 No.2626994
Reminds me of someone... chinese guy with poor hygene, followed people around if he thought they were his friends, claimed/thought he had a girlfriend but it turned out to be an automatic response voice telephone number, was probably autistic to some degree. He would have just started uni too.
    >> Anonymous 01/01/09(Thu)22:50:12 No.2627011
Haha. The kid getting "bullied" sounds like me.

I ask questions to try to learn more about the people. If they are assholes and can't build a conversation from there, fuck them. My hygiene can be a little below average sometimes, on account my my laziness.

The funny part about the whole scenario is that people mock me to my face, try to get me to do stuff, etc. I really don't give a shit what they have to say. I'm comfortable with who I am and no closet case douche bag is going to change that.

I dearly hope the guy in OP's scenario is the same way.
