    99 KBLanguage Thread (v. New Years) Anonymous 12/31/08(Wed)20:03:40 No.2614714
I was inspired by the last thread so I've started my New Year's Resolution early and started learnan French. I know a couple of you want to learn/brush up on French as well (and other languages) so I'm going to share what I'm using. Since I can't have true immersion, am immersing myself in the language as much as I can.

    +French phrase book
    +French-English dictionary
    +real flash cards
    +a couple French films
    +French music
    +French porn

Why French? Why not? Lots of materials available on the internets, it's spoken in many places around the world outside of France, there is a lot of great French music (inb4 MC Solaar) and a thriving film industry in France... and French women do their laundry in the nude. Pic related.

I think French would be a great language to build some confidence and springboard me into other languages.

english is the only language worth learning because it's like the central language. all other languages can be translated into english, which makes english like the "main language"

Not really. Ever gotten free food because you speak English? I got a free serving of soup and some free noodles to go because I practiced a little Mandarin in a Chinese restaurant. Also, speaking in broken Russian got me a few rounds of vodka on the house in St. Petersburg. People see that you took the time and effort to learn their language, even though you don't have to as an English speaker, and they become much more open and friendly with you.

Of course there are about 85 more advantages to learning another language, but this is one little perk that surprised me.

I'd have to say, though, that OP might not get that with French. They're pretty stuck up about having perfect pronunciation and grammar. Speaking in bad French would just get a croissant thrown at you.

Not really. If you are an American Spanish would be a better choice or even Cantonese or Portuguese. French is okay if you happen to live in Western Europe and you already speak German, or if you live in Canada since it increases your marketability. French is pretty easy and similar to some other useful languages but unless you have some definitive purpose in mind it's hardly the optimal choice.

Pero en realidad, la mayoria de los paises donde el frances esta un idioma oficial estan en Africa, por ejemplo Cote d'Ivoire. Por tanto no estan un idioma muy util afuera de Francia.

Also, once you know one Romance language you can read the others pretty well, though you can't hear or produce them. Some more than others, of course: Spanish makes Portuguese and Italian pretty easy, though French is still a bitch. Esperanto is perfectly readable with Spanish too, oddly enough.

Actually it's very possible to learn Spanish in a year, depending how much time you spend.

The US Language Institute puts Spanish at 6 months of study to get to a competent level, but spending about 25 hours (max) per week of study.

You know what! this fucking thread has inspired me to brush up on my Spanish! My Spanish right now is horribly broken... I can understand the dialect perfectly but when it comes to speaking it, it is difficult for me to form basic sentences; and it gets worse because I don't have an accent when I speak in Spanish so it makes me look like more like a retard than someone who is forgetting his native tongue. Has anyone read all of that "How to Learn Any Language" book? I got about 40 pages in to it, and it gave some advice, although basically what I took away from it is that the Pimsleur teaching method is one of the best ways, so just learn from their products. Also, don't worry about rules of grammar, they'll come naturally over time. Anything else in it worth reading?

Mandarin is the official language of China. Cantonese is only spoken in Hong Kong, while Japanese and Korean are only spoken in their respective countries. Mandarin would be the most useful. Languages = makes you more interesting.

I started learning French back in October. A girl asked me what I was into and I said "languages" and then she found out I spoke a little French. Apparently simple conversational French impressed her and increased my attractiveness in her eyes by at least 250%.

Needless to say, learning French and just having an interest in languages has made seem much more interesting and attractive, even to monolingual native English speakers.
