So I was at Christmas dinner with my fam and my cousin kept spouting memes. That was pretty embarrassing. I left /b/ a long time ago. I don't appreciate memespouters at all. Especially not the sixteen year old halfassed scenester girls who shout "YOU JUST DID AN EPIC FAIL" and "I'M CHARGING MY LASER! SHEWP DEE WHEWP!"

I'd like to know if any of you spout memes on a daily basis. If it's with your friends who happen to browse and get what you're talking about, I guess I don't mind(if you're not a sixteen year old girl). But what's the point of yelling it at random people or using it in conversation anyway? All it does is piss me the fuck off (and, like, RAGE and stuff! lolos!). I can't point out that I want them to shut the fuck up, either, because that only makes them switch from spouting memes around me to spouting memes AT me because they found someone who knows what they're talking about.

It's even worse at cons, too. Millions of sixteen year old girls that I don't normally have to interact with are all around squealing about mudkips. I share a joke or two with people I know who (used to) go on /b/ in the glory days, but I never go around yelling it. Is there a perfect balance?
    >> Anonymous 12/29/08(Mon)12:36:07 No.2586520
Yeah, I did when I was a newfag on /b/.

I know about 4 people who also browse 4chan, we only talk about fun thread, almost never about memes. We only spout memes if we're talking with people who don't know them, it's fun to put them in a conversation and they don't notice

Memes are always a bad thing, even on the internet and especially in real life.

oldfag /b/tards NEVER, EVER, admit to surfing the ocean of piss that is /b/.

I drop memes occasionally, but in context. I go camping and ask if anyone wants to go catch mudkips with me cause everyone loves mudkips. Or "you fail, dude"
    >> Anonymous 12/29/08(Mon)12:41:07 No.2586551
I'm with you OP, some of my friends found /b/ once and didn't know I knew about it because I don't go around spouting memes. They kept just using them whenever they could so I eventually flipped and yelled at them for like 30 minutes, i don't remember exactly what i said but the main point was that they were stupid and things on the internet should stay on the internet. Needless to say we are no longer friends.

    >> Anonymous 12/29/08(Mon)12:45:23 No.2586590
No, not memes. But the way I talk and words I use are really characteristic to this place. One of my groups of friends is the same and we don't even notice it, but wny others think we're pretty hermetic.

God, it's been almost 3 years now that I'm here. It would be impossible not to talk like a retard.

I definitely have yelled at a few of my friends before for it, I remember doing it once when a friend tried to show me LOLCATS!!!1, but I never could grasp a good enough reason for them to cut that shit out. If they can't understand why it's annoying, how could I expect them to stop?
    Illustrative examples:
    >>2586532
    >>2586578

Also, yeah, deviantart has really fucked up some good shit. I dunno if they have patrol cops stationed on each board or what, but they seem to pick up memes on a dime, even from /r9k/, which doesn't really have any memes except stupid faces.
Boy do they love stupid faces. They don't have to have read any hilarious MS Paint uses of them, no, they just like it because it looks stupid. They give them stupid-ass names, too, like 'imhappyplz'. I didn't think that was supposed to have a name. But, like every little girl, they have to give everything a name so they can drop said name at any moment they wish, for MAXIMUM LULZ!!

By the way this is OP.

    >> Anonymous 12/29/08(Mon)12:57:09 No.2586672
I never talk about memes. I talk with my friends about cool threads and if maybe they were on any of them and further discuss the general topic of the thread more.

And to the fags saying "ololol /b/ wuz n3\/4r gud im oldfag epic lulz!!"" /b/ WAS good. Around 2003-2007 was when /b/ was still a bit cool to visit and screw around in. Then came the shit with lol.js and 4chan being featured in the Wall Street Journal and from there, everything went to shit. Now all that's there are pretty much the memespouters like OP described and other wastes of space.

    YES, GOD
I understand the meaning of "epic fail", etc, who wouldn't, but I keep hearing it used improperly. "Epic" as a noun, or "epic fail" as one collective verb, like I actually heard someone say "I epic fail'd!" at a game tournament once. Goddamn.

They're part of the lingo, as I'm sure everyone understood who isn't busy being a prick for no reason. Also, there's no way they were in common usage and used in the way they are now before The Internet came along and shat over everything.
    >> Anonymous 12/29/08(Mon)13:17:14 No.2586807
I say "shit sucks" ALL THE TIME, but I don't know if that really counts as a meme at all. In fact, it might just be something people say in general, I just heard it first on 4chan.

I also say fail but I feel like that doesn't really matter. It just seems like a figure of speech rather than some retarded internet inside joke (not that there's anything wrong with those...), unless you're using "epic fail" as a noun or something like OP described. Who the fuck says that anyway? yuck.

I've never really mentioned 4chan or any boards unless someone specifically asks me about it or if it's a close friend of mine or something like that. I'm not really trying, I just don't ever feel like I have to talk about it.

I occasionally use memes as part of a conversaion with my friends but never just spout them out like a retard with tourettes. I don't spout out memes when giving lectures, or in books, I ocasionally pop one in a news article if it isn't out of place to see if I can get it past my editor or if anyone notices it. For example, in one magazine I was writing for I had to report on a poll to name a baby lion that had recived 9500 votes and it amused me to use the phrase 'over 9000' in the article.

Myself, a channer and a non channer hung out the other day and while my channer friend was talking about his ex saying that her gay room mate wasn't going to try to sleep with her I just stared at him and said:

There's your first problem. She should have said SHE wasn't going to try to sleep with HIM. You should have known she was going to FUCK A LOT OF DUDES.

The moral of the story is that i only use mems and such if the conversation is appropriate and I won't have to mention it's a joke from the internet. My non chan friend was laughing and we spent the rest of the night joking about fucking a lot of dudes.

I don't say these things out loud to anyone who doesn't browse. If they do, there is a hidden smirk behind the actual joke and nothing more.

I'll chat with some friends about 4chan in general, usually pertaining to specific threads (i.e. "I was reading this thread the other day and yadda yadda yadda"), but I desperately try not to abuse memes. If I end up spouting some meme it's usually meant to be ironic.

Mostly, I see that kind of behavior as just a phase that kids need to get through their system before comprehending how stupid it is and forming the same opinions as the OP. For some people it takes longer, for some it's a quick transition, but I'm sure most people go through something like that during the course of their internet life.

Unfortunately for us, there will always be a subset of people in that age/phase, due to the amount of people growing up and being born all the time. I feel there's nothing to do but cope with it, confident that the person will eventually grow out of it.

People around me just started browsing /b/ a few months ago, but I quickly shut them up as soon as one said "Mudkips". Luckily most of my friends look up to me as a perfect model for nerd culture, so they quickly shut the fuck up once I told them spouting memes isn't exactly the coolest thing to do.

But its still fun on occasion to hijack an acquaintance's conversation when they say something that's verbally exploitable or reminisce about some old obscure meme from a younger /b/.

Also, most of my closest friends stopped lurking /b/ and moved on to the real boards that aren't as "lol random XD". Its really nice to talk about *chan-related things other than chanology and mudkips.

I feel like the MORE time you spend on 4chan, the less memes you spout. I have a friend who's never actually been on /b/, and acquired all the other memes from secondary sources influenced by /b/. He's a spouter. Another friend dabbles, and occasionally lets out an "epic fail", or asks someone's little sister if they like pizza, but she's generally pretty good about it. And then I'm on here for at least a couple hours every day, and the most I ever say is "SHE'S GOING TO FUCK A LOT OF DUDES" (because that is hands down my favorite meme,

My gay roommate shouts out "FAIL!" at just about everything nowadays, so I had a slight suspicion that maybe, just maybe, he discovered a *chan. I had a bit of optimism for once, you know? Just for once. So one day, out of the blue, I'm like,

"Itty bitty baby, itty bitty boat."

    "What?"

"Itty bitty baby, itty bitty boat."

"... okay, you're not making sense here. FAIL!"

On that day, I didn't just give up. A part of me died.
    >> Anonymous 12/29/08(Mon)16:49:37 No.2588561
It is not ok to use chanspeak anywhere other than *chans. This includes real life as well as the internet. Its also not ok to say "epic" at all, even here.
    >> Anonymous 12/29/08(Mon)16:49:41 No.2588563
What the fuck is wrong with you guys? The words "epic" and "fail" are not memes. They're fucking words. Monosyllabic relatively common words. They're not meaningless phrases, they don't disrupt conversation. Do you seriously get all butthurt over that? Get your heads out of your asses. It's not like "so I herd u liek mudkips" or "IT'S OVER 9000!" It's not even in the same ballpark.
    >> Anonymous 12/29/08(Mon)16:50:11 No.2588564
I have to admit to spouting some memes with some fellow /b/tards, but I usually just say 'fail' when stuff goes wrong. This one girl I know wrecks good things by memespouting them until you want to hit her with ten ton truck.

Are you retarded? Yes well done, they're words that existed a long long time ago, but the way they're used has changed - a few years ago, no-one would have just said 'fail' on its own in response to anything, that's totally come about thanks to t'internet.

Meh, I have a few friends who go on 4chan as well, and we use a couple of bits of chanspeak in the casual, relevant ways rather than running around screaming "mudkipz" at the tops of our fucking lungs. The usuals are raging over stupid shit, I see what you did there, every once in a while something will either be epic or pure fail. We have one friend who is an idiot and constant fuckup, and whenever he is coming over we usually say "It looks like our annual shipment of fail is due to arrive any minute now.*
    >> Anonymous 12/29/08(Mon)17:03:02 No.2588645
I used to meme-spout when I was a newfag; who didn't? I stopped once I found out it wasn't cool (it took me a few months, I was a huge faggot).

My little brother always has his middle school friends come over, and I always overhear some of them screaming "EPIC FAIL" or "FAIL" and various other raped memes/phrases/words. A guy who hates me found out I hate it when people spout memes and did it around me constantly for six months, I swear I almost punched him in the fucking face a few times.

As >>2586590 was saying, 4chan users sometimes have a certain way of speaking or typing without spouting memes. I as well type in a way that gives it away, as well as a few of my friends, but I don't spout memes.

Also, I want to fucking kill someone every time I hear "fail," "newfag," "epic fail," etc.

    >> Anonymous 12/29/08(Mon)17:24:20 No.2588807
    >>2588577
Yeah, sure, they wouldn't be used the same way without the internet. But they're still words that can be used coherently in a sentence and contribute to a conversation. You guys are pretty much saying "you guys aren't allowed to use these words because the internet made them popular."
There's a pretty big difference between saying "I got a ton of shit for Christmas, it was fucking epic!" and "Oh man so I heard you like Mudkips? They're OVER 9000! ~DESU DESU DESU."
    >> Anonymous 12/29/08(Mon)17:30:23 No.2588850
One thing you guys gotta remember is that the very nature of a meme is that it spreads. A lot of 4chan memes have spread to the rest of the internet - I knew a pile of them before I ever came here.

My younger sister hates 4chan and thinks everyone on it is a fucking retard, but she herself hangs out on Gaia, even if she claims it's only because she's been there for years now and only stays on it to talk to the friends she's made there, in one thread where they complain about what a shithole the site is. In any case, when we IM or email each other, we tend to use the odd meme if it fits the conversation. IRL though we never use them beyond 'epic fail', which we do use in the meme sense, and that's pretty sparsely.
The only instance I can think of us using any other meme was last Christmas when I was playing Pokemon while visiting the family. She glanced at the screen, asked 'Is that Pokeymans?" and I replied "Yes, let me show you them."

Beyond that, the only person I do know that goes to 4chan we almost never talk about, unless one of us wants to share something we read in a thread or whatnot. We've never spouted internet memes, partially because we have enough personal ones.
Though there are some kids at work who tend to spout memes, although whether they know them from 4chan or just around the internet I don't know. They were having a fielday with Pedobear for a while, replacing people's desktops with pictures of Pedobear and the like. One of them made a comment to me about it once and I just replied 'Fucking 4chan.' Coincidence or not, the meme spouting died down after that.

    >> Anonymous 12/29/08(Mon)17:51:29 No.2589011
It's not even so much as memedropping, to sound cool or to see if there are other 4channers, but I just have a different way of talking.
I mutter "fail" whenever anyone, you know, fails. I don't go "OMG EPIC FAIL LOL YOU EPIC FAILED", that's just fucking retarted. Also, whenever I have a large number, I don't say "like a billion" I say "like over nine thousand" or "like 9001". I'm not doing it on purpose, it's just I have lurked way too much.
I also feel a lot more inclined into calling others "fag", which isn't the best since most people around here take it as a harsher insult.
Also, a pretty long time ago, some guy was being annoying and kept bothering my friends and I about some stupid math thing he didn't want to do himself. It was simple, yet he just didn't want to do the extra 3 steps.
One of my friends yelled "YOUR TEXTBOOK, MOTHERFUCKER. DO YOU USE IT?"
He just kind of stared at her, and then left us alone.
I didn't want to say anything. I'd rather not know if my friends lurk 4chan.

I have never once uttered a meme on /b/ IRL.

However, I have referenced animu and tv memes irl once I told my mom, "the only reality is virtual".

I sometimes go to music chatrooms where i see ppl say shit like PICS or it didnt happen, or TITS or GTFO.

    I cringe.
I'd also slap a fool if I saw them use memes in real life, however, I'd lol If I saw something IRL that reminded me of a meme.
    >> Anonymous 12/29/08(Mon)18:20:33 No.2589223
I did. Very, very briefly, back when I found /b/ in early '06. Then I was hit with a wave of maturity and a wave of /b/-going-mainstream AT THE SAME TIME.

Needless to say, it doesn't happen anymore, and none of my friends (all 4channers) do it either. We're not perfect, mind - "haha oh wow", "oh u", "win/fail", "fag"faggotry and even, heaven help us, "epic", all slip into conversation. But eh, the worst abuse of them is over, and the stupid is fading out.

This situation is also helped by the fact that frankly most memes sound stupid and stilted when RL'ed Hell, even the most annoying and /b/-yet-not-/b/ kid limits himself to 'i hurd u liek mudkipz'.

Of course, I still have to deal with my irritating-as-fuck meme-spouting 11-year-old brother whenever he's around. Which is annoying.
