Of course spending more time every day learning a language will make you learn it faster, but how much faster?

Assuming time is not an issue and immersion is not a possibility, how long could one feasibly become conversationally fluent in a language?

Pic unrelated, I'm specifically talking about a Romance language like Spanish, French, or Italian.

    Also, General Language Thread, etc.

    2 months, bro

Depends, really. How much time is more time? I spent 6 years on French, 2 on German and ongoing 1 and a half years on Spanish doing about 1-2 hours a day, five days a week. I can barely speak a word of any of these languages.

Has anyone here learned how to speak Gaelic? If so, is it difficult? I want to learn it so I can talk to my grandfather before he dies.

    1. Download music. Lots of it. In that language.
    2. Force yourself to think of everything in that language. (eg. You see a car and say "coche," then progressively increase the difficulty as you become more familiar-- "Ese coche es un Fiat. Se van a la concha de su madre!")
    3. Learn the Grammar of your language, then the grammar of the other language. Apply.
    4. Conjugate words, lots of them, daily. I'm sure you can find a list of the most used words in a language.
    5. Skype. I'm sure you can find people that will be willing to speak to you. Go to forums where people speak that language and get one of them to help you.

I learned English to conversational fluency in like 2 months. (Spanish mother tongue) I learned English to Academic fluency in about a year. As for the accent, only immersion solves that. I still have an accent.

I'm impressed. If this was real life and I wore a cap, now would be the time to doff it.

Heh, doff. What a silly word that is. Doff.

Its not hard, I promise. You just have to have drive. And you have to stop thinking in English. That's the hardest part. Ever go to a butcher and try to get meat, but then realize that there's no gender in English? Jesus christ, it is annoying.
