What are the worst conditions you've taken children from?

Do you say mean things to kids when you are forced to take them into care? Shit like "your parents don't love you" and "it's your fault that this is happening" when they're in the car on the ride to their new temporary home. Just for shits and giggles.

I'm an intake caseworker, meaning we are the first people in there and every single time I go to a home, I'm scared. No training in the world prepares you for the uncertainty behind that door. We aren't allowed anything to protect ourselves either, but I've taken it upon myself to take self-defense classes.

I once removed children from a crack den. The children were absolutely filthy (If you watch Breaking Bad, the episode with the little kid in the shitty house with the shitty parents comes to mind) and these two kids, about 7 and 2 were FILTHY. I'm taking dirty clothes, a severe lice infestation, incredible BO, the works, and the mother had the gall to say she has just given them a bath. Maybe she gave them a bath in tub full of shit cause that's what they smelled like.

There are many times where I've had to sit there and deal with these kids cursing me out and giving me lip, but I know its not their fault. Its natural to be angry against a stranger who's taken you away. I don't get defensive against them, I just sit there and let it go into one ear and out the other. Its when I get to the office where I unleash all the things I want to say to my coworkers to unload that.

I had to do a removal of 8 kids from a home where the adoptive mother did not acknowledge that these 8 girls were being sexually molested. It was a long night in the hospital waiting room to get their physicals and I bonded with all of them, they ranged from 9 to 17 years old and they were great kids tied up in a really unfortunate situation.

There was another kid who was precious. I was picking him up from his temp foster home to take him to a new, more long-term foster home. I didn't read his casefile since I was doing it as a favor for my co-worker, but he was so happy and singing really loud to the music in my car and being simply precious.

I try not to let it affect me, but I'm still new to the job (1 year in) and it's hard not to let things go. I try to do a lot of things to keep me distracted and to unwind since the job has a ridiculous burnout rate.

My chav next door neighbours have a demon child who just runs around destroying the whole streets property all day, never goes school or anything. I see social workers in there from time to time, but nothing ever happens.

I dunno the laws of the UK, but in the US, that's not enough to remove the child. In order for the kid to be removed, they need to be in some sort of danger, truancy is not an issue of danger, though they can be removed if they aren't going to school because its against the law to not go to school until a certain age (16 in my state) and the parents do nothing and let them stay home. Maybe try calling the police?
