    Gentlemen,

Where did rule 34 originate from? I keep seeing people on 4chan (mainly /b/) claiming it's theirs but I always thought it existed either before 4chan or initially without any 4chan influence.

A guy actually burnt /b/ on one of his limbs about ~7-8 months ago, made a thread about it.

When people asked for proof an ingenious guy asked him to burn a triangle next to the /b/. He did. And posted pictures. God damn retards.

rule 34 is one of the most recited rules from the rules of 4chan. the rules were invented very early in 4chan's history, but many of them were lost or changed. you can find the new salvaged list of rules at encyclopediadramatica.com

they informal rules of course. none of them were officially endorsed by the 4chan mods. people just liked them.
    >> Anonymous 12/18/08(Thu)15:00:06 No.2481064
the meme of a "rules of the internet" list is old as fuck and probably goes back all the way to usenet or whatever else those poor miserable bastards used to communicate before the web around

the rule itself was definitely around before 4chan and probably cam from multiple sources who came up with it semi-independently while making those stupid rule lists

However 4chan probably did popularize and codify it as "rule 34"

In the old, "wild" days of the interbuttz- nothing was safe
every link was a potential landmine and the subtlest of posts can turn into full-blown flame wars

Then came the "founding fathers". The very architects of this fragile institution riding their horses like the lord Jesus Himself on the day of Armageddon.

Gods amongst men brought forth to bring order to this chaos that is computer interconnectivity
Armed with their keyboards, they framed the code that would forever known as the "rules of the Internet"

    the moar you knoe

Rule 34 was one of the only real rules.
1 and 2 were from Anon's wet dreamin' over Fight Club.
The rest were made up to fill in the gaps (and are consequentially quite lame).

The concept of rule 34 definitely predates 4chan and the internet. Ever heard of Tijuana Bibles?

    Anon has the answer.

Rule 34 originated from some shitty webcomic no one ever visited. One of the comics depicted a man in front of a computer, saying... you know what, let's just see if I can post the comic without getting mooted.

This is the origin of Rule 34. It was never 4chans to create, only to take.
    >> Anonymous 12/18/08(Thu)23:09:52 No.2484440
I believe the best way to describe the "rules of the internet" is not so much as rules, but "interpretations" or "observations".

There is no one person who sat down one day and said, "there is porn of everything, no exceptions" - rather, someone sat down one day and browsed the internet, and noticed that there was a lot of porn. A LOT of porn, and some of it involved things that you might not otherwise think of as porn.

And so, they said, "Hmmm, there's a lot of porn here - I bet you can make ANYTHING porn!" And so they surfed more and more, and for longer and longer, and verily they saw that there was porn of almost anything they could think of. And so they said, "there is porn of it, no exceptions."

tl;dr the rules were never invented and they aren't rules but observations
