    I have a small problem /r9k/...

I'm a fairly recent Uni graduate, and have managed to land myself a rather well paying job. This in itself is good.

    Except I fucking hate it.

I wish I could say I hated the work, but I can't say that, because I haven't fucking been given any. Nothing. Zip. I sit there for 8 hours a day trying to find things to do. I'm guessing many people think this would be fantastic, rock up, do nothing, get paid. They would be wrong. It is so fucking boring that I feel like my skull is going to collapse in on itself.

I just don't know what the hell to do. I can take jobs which are rather shitty, but this is too much. However, I can't really just up and quit because I need the money and also the experience.

What can I do about trying to make this situation less fucking awful?

In before being told what's in the picture.

listen to music, fall asleep, or play vidya

or gtfo and get a new job

Why don't you bring a book to read? Operate on your cellphone? Pick up a fucking PSP and watch some movies?

How are you getting experience if you do nothing all day? Are you seriously bitching about sitting around for hours on end and getting paid to it when so many of us do it for free already?

    Find another fucking job.

Just be glad you have a job, man. I graduated back in May and I haven't been able to get a job since. Shit sucks. I'd kill to have a job, even an extremely boring one.

See, I herd there this weird things call "buks" or "Boos" or "books", I don't know well, a friend of a friend once read one.

They say you can use your time somehow with them, exchange time for mind profit.

I'm pretty sure I'd get fired if I actually started sleeping at my desk.

    >>2466898

Again, if I sat there on a fucking PSP I think people would probably notice. It's less experience and more shit to put on my resume when I eventually do apply for something better. Which, given the pay, might be a while.

    >>2466906

Government job. Meant to be taking care of some software. Probably. I don't know, like I said, I've been given fuck all to do.

    >>2466913

Yeah, that's my first solution. Basically take in a Java book and just read it. This is going to get old doing it for 8 hours a day though.

get a ipod or psp so you can watch some movies listen to music, play games. or get a ds and play pokemon. it's repetitive, but it can keep you entertained for hours. if you have an iphone you could browse the web. i would fucking love your job.

and if they don't let you do cool shit like that, quit.

Can you work on a laptop or something? They don't give you work, but they would get mad at you for playing on a psp? I don't get it, do they expect you to just stare into space all day? if you got a laptop, play some fucking vidya games on it, and just make sure your back is against a wall so no one can see. if you are supposed to read books and do paperwork, you could buy used boring accounting books and put a smaller book inside and read those. if you put a big stack of books in front of your hands you could play psp without ppl seeing. they would think you were writing something.

I know exactly how you feel OP.

Freshly graduated over the summer, found a good paying job in a private company. Damn good pay for a zero-experience rookie...and no work to earn it.

I'm hired more or less as an assistant to fill in whatever work might come up, except I get assigned nothing. NOTHING.
Walk into work everyday, sit at my desk and waste time. Ok, I do get a small task here and there every so often, but its over within the hour and back to zero.
Having little to nothing to do is probably better then being crushed under a neverending load of work, but damn its draining my mind and spirit just as bad.

Dunno what resources you have at your disposal, but if you at least have a near functioning PC, theres a never ending supply of eBooks online.
I'll be continuing through the Hellblazer Comic series as you read this.

    About 55k a year.

    >>2467025

I'm reasonably new there. I don't know the systems well enough to just sit down and work. Much of it is implemented (actually, pretty much all of it is implemented) so I don't know what exactly they want me to do with it. I need -some- kind of guidance here.

    >>2467105

I read some technical documentation that I find lying around places. I'm not given anything. Once I've read that I browse for anything else that could possibly be of use, but most of it is just administrative garbage. It really is basically doing absolutely nothing.

    >>2467477

I have a functioning PC, yeah. I know what you mean though. Draining is exactly the word I'd use for it as well.

A hundred years ago, I would have loved to be in your predicament.

In 2008, I can start using all manner of cheap digital devices to keep busy/entertained should I get tired of my analog book.

Dear OP, I'd say you're a great example of how the modern education system sucks. You've obviously succeeded massively at conventional education, but you lack the initiative of a six year old. Work on some projects of your own at the desk. Since it's programming, it'll look like paying work, and even if somebody notices, they'd approve of you making productive use of time.

I posted the first message, and I agree with the second, so here's an addendum: you aren't worth shit unless you are creating something. Write something worth reading, draw a picture, and sit comfortably on your soft, justified sense of self-satisfaction. This applies to everyone.

Since you're in IT, take the down time to read some technical books to improve your skills. This can only help you down the road when you want to move on and the folks there probably won't be too upset with you trying to improve your skill set (since that means you could take on extra responsibilities).

get some remote login software on your home pc. use it so that you can use your pc from work

set up a nice looking website for yourself, get a pro looking domain and email with it

go on some site where people get quotes for jobs they need doing, and bid for some. you're bound to get some eventually if you actually try, and if you provide a good service you're bound to get more customers from reccomendation and repeat customers

or you could do an ebay business or set up and do most of the running of practically any web-based business such as a shop from work, and do despatch from home after hours.

if you put effort in then you can make enough profit to get some other guy to do the actual work, while you just take the money off the top. or sell the business.

if you're making a good wage in a stable job and have all this free time then DO NOT WASTE IT, its a great opportunity. just use your head to take what i have told you further, it isn't hard. you don't need an amazing or unique idea to make money, most money nowadays is still being made just by buying something cheap in bulk and selling it at a profit. find niches and expand them.

    Hey /r9k/

I need a bit of help. Anyone with experience in o-o programming might be able to help me. I am trying to write the method for loading some data from the db. It needs to call on a method that already does this in a superclass. How do I write this method?
