London is the greatest city in the world.

It is a massive and bustling metropolis which isn't riddled with ridiculous tall buildings and is caressed by beautiful classical architecture along with modern day artistic buildings. It has a perfect balance of culture and societal development. Our schools are the best, our universities are some of the best, our summers are beautiful, and we have pretty much everything of anything when it comes to restaurants, bars, and recreational facilities.

East London has a slight problem with chavs I GUESS, but they're pussies compared to the lower class in other major capitals.

ITT: talk about why where you live is so great

What. Central London is full of people in suits and hipsters who go to trendy bars. It's east london you should be scared of when it comes to getting mugs. Central London is WAY too expensive for those thugs to visit, and definitely too expensive to live in.

I go down there often (I live in the subarbs) because the train system is awesome so it only takes me 20 minutes on the central line to get to oxford street.

Fucking awesome. Never heard of ANYONE getting mugged in central.

Well I wanted to go to Goodge Street and Picadilly Circus to go to the arcades mainly and a few game stores, I just can't muster up the courage to go by myself, I live right next to a Picadilly Line and Metro Line stop in the North-West so it should be easy and straightforward enough for me to go by myself, I guess my paranoia and anxiety is mostly holding me back.

    >> Anonymous 12/15/08(Mon)08:01:48 No.2445886
London is the ugliest city I've ever been to. The architecture is so hodge podged. It's like the city's having a massive identity crisis and can't decide if it wants to be 'classical' in it's architecture, modern, or contemporary. So these buildings dot the town and don't blend at all. Just looks like a face with acne all over it.

Now Paris, that is a beautiful city (if you're going for cities without sky scrapers).

I live in the pot smoking capitol of California.

I could smoke weed walking down the street and not get a second glance. We've got more head shops than grocery stores. And dank that's imported throughout the west coast.

    San Jose, California.

Surrounding area is pretty much the technology capital of the world. Weather is usually nice, even if it's raining right now. Also ranked one of the safest large cities in the nation.

    Wiki had this little gem:
    >San Jose residents produce more U.S. patents than any other city. Thirty-five percent of all venture capital funds in the U.S. are invested in San Jose and Silicon Valley companies.

I live in Middle Tennessee. It's awesome because everywhere you go is a different kind of beautiful, and people here appreciate the simple things in life. They're more upstanding and friendly. I live around mountains, but they're not real hugeass mountains, they're foothills, so you get the benefit of topography without needing helicopters to rescue you. I get vertigo when I go to flat places. It's acceptable to dress like a hipster and walk around with a can of dip in your back pocket. The food is all fried and delicious. The outdoor hobbies people partake in, like fishing, hunting and just enjoying the view or whatever are very wholesome, in my opinion, and help you keep your mind clear..

I live in Bath, in the Southwest of England.

It's a world heritage site, and insanely pretty. Low crime, good employment rate. First rate education all the way up to university level. It's not as big as somewhere as London obviously, but it has a decent nightlife where everything's underground if it's a club, and there are a lot of pubs serving great beer and cider. The students stop it from becoming boring and old-man-y. Rigt next door is Bristol which is awesome for going clubbing, and a short train ride away is london so I can go visit friends there too.

Suits me great at the moment.

Cities I'm also fucking fond of: Nottingham, London, Hong Kong, San Fran, NY.

I live in San Antonio and i love it. It's like a really big little city. I work in the hospitality industry there and everyone always tells me the hospitality in San Antonio is much better than any of the other cities they've visited. It's a huge city, but its still based on that little city economy which makes our town resistant to the recession. Our modern architecture isn't the best, but it's all the little buildings in downtown that makes the city what it is. and its in Texas so thats a plus.

You kidding? Royal Hol isn't the third best London Uni

UCL, LSE and Kings are at the top, Queen Mary follows but is dampened because of its horrible location and mickey mouse degrees saturating the great medicine/humanities departments. After that we have Royal Holloway.

I mean I suppose it depends on what department you're in.

That said Holloway does seem like a pleasent uni to go to. As you said, best of both worlds. Its the same with where I live, I'm right near London, but enjoy peace and clenliness because I'm further out.

UCL is 1st because of it's size. LSE comes second, though I don't know why. 3rd is Royal Holloway pretty broad uni with everything which you could ask for. One of the top research institutes in the UK. Imperial and Kings are a close fight for 4th and 5th but it's shortened amount of subjects hinders it where Royal Holloway flies.

I'd say that RHUL is more like UCL, in respect that it offers a wide range of subjects and isn't individually focused on one department for it's accolades. You can't really criticise LSE, King's and Imperial in that respect, as they do not offer as wide a range as UCl, RHUL or QM. But QM definitely doesn't even compare along RHUL when you look at research, investment and tech, no matter how intelligent your friends are. As for UCL's strengths being science and medicine, although it's true, they are just as strong in business and maths. Heh, I guess it's why they're no.1 eh?

If Imperial and King's offered more than they're narrow range of subjects then perhaps they'd be third. Hell, I'm just going with the consensus view here. After all, whether it be UCL, LSE or RHUL, at the end of the day, we all get a University of London degree right?

It'd be like saying which college of Oxford or Cambridge is better.

10 minutes from the College of the Siskiyous, a very nice community college (as those go).

Small enough that violent crime is virtually non-existent, big enough that it has restaurants, a theater, etc. unlike some deserted hellhole (*cough*McCloud*cough*)

Pic is of main street. Notice the complete lack of crowds/noise/pollution.

    My hometown kicks ass.

Well, I suppose its best to look at it from the dept that you studied in rather than overall imo. Like if I did English Lit I'd say Kings and QMU were at the top. If it was meds, I'd say UCL or QMU.

As for all being part of the University of London.

I always wondered about that. What do you put on the CV? Degree from university of london? Or Kings College.

As mentioned, Oxford is just oxford, you dont mention the college afaik...

Calgary was awesome before the swarm of immigrants and newfies. A booming economy has its negatives for sure. Rent is sky high and most people work way to hard and binge drink/eat. I want to move to Toronto.

My only beef with London, speaking as a Brit, is that what would have been a non-news story anywhere else in the country can make national news if it happens in London. In addition, Parliament is extremely London-centric. It's the capital city, sure, but that doesn't make it particularly relevant to, say, Yorkshire... or anywhere else in the UK.

I dunno. I've always thought that University of London was just that. LSE, UCL, KCL, QMU, RHUL and ICL all are a part of UoL but people still treat them differently. Looking at UCL's website, they have just the same units of undergraduate study as RHUL in my subject so there isn't any difference in content.

Do employers really care if Royal Holloway is in front of University of London rather than Queen Mary? I hope not for everyone's sake.

Oxbridge colleges apparently have classes together, because of the size of the towns of Oxford and Cambridge. But because London is larger, you obviously can't have classes between different colleges.

The degree says University of London. That much I do know. So if you are worried that an employer might not hold your college highly you could always not put the college on there. ;D

Pfft, a 1st Class Honours from Middlesex is better than a 3rd Class from Harvard though. amirite?
