The february 2009 switch to digital...I feel bad for anyone who's not hooked up to cable. Really, I do.

Everyone who's hooked up to cable will notice nothing wrong with their signal. All channels clear as a bell. After all, that's the nature of digital. It's binary - either you get the signal or you don't.

But - to those who get their television over the air: You are all in for a very big surprise. Some of you may notice that you have some channels you can watch just fine, but you'll notice just a tiny little bit of static. Your ability to watch those channels will drastically change when the signal switches to digital. How much? Well, with analog, a weak signal translates to static. How much static is determined by how weak the signal is. With digital, any signal less than 95% will stutter and cut out as long as the signal is less than 95% At roughly 60% or less signal strength, you will receive no picture or audio at all. Simply a, "No signal." message.

So to those who still use rabbit ears and have a couple fuzzy or slightly fuzzy channels - enjoy those channels while you still can. They're doomed to be unwatchable past February.

The government is offering free digital tuner boxes to people who need them. They'll be fine unless they've chosen to ignore the constant stream of warnings on the broadcasted networks.

Funny enough, there WILL be people who will get angry and restless on the day that it happens, and it will be there own damn fault.

lol no, you just get digital errors instead of analogue errors

Those tuner boxes work by getting digial signals over the air.

Yeah, I noticed a couple of those when I was fooling around with my digital antenna.

Though most of the time, if I didn't have a 95-100% signal, I just got audio and video stuttering so bad it was unwatchable.

Why the hell do people even watch TV still? Everything can be either watched or downloaded. I haven't watched anything in months, my TV only gets used for game consoles.

People who don't have cable this far into the 21st century deserve to be deported to some island and shot.

I can understand that some people refuse to believe what I'm telling them. Sure. Seeing is believing isn't it? You don't see what I'm seeing. You aren't seeing what digital is like over the air.

So for those who think digital over the air will work. To those who don't believe me when I say digital signals cut out a whole lot even at 75% signal strength I ask one simple question:

    Megaupload or rapidshare.

I'm more than happy to show you what digital looks like over the air.

What's the reason behind the switch, anyways?

I own an HDTV/LCD screen so this is bullshit I only have one screen in my room. This is what everyone should have btw.

The government supposedly wanted to free up some frequencies in the spectrum so that companies could use it at their leisure. Yay corporatism!

    For those curious:

I have cable. It just won't work with my tv tuner right now. So I'm stuck with the digital antenna until my cable company is forced to switch to all digital signals on all their channels. I don't get ANY digital channels up here. So if I want to watch tv on my tuner, it's through digital antenna.
    >> Anonymous 12/28/08(Sun)20:29 No.2439691
Just out of curiosity... whether or not I'm paying for my television shouldn't matter, right? My signal comes in through a cable left by a previous occupant. Is there a way the cable company might know that I'm not paying, and shut off my cable?
    >> Anonymous 12/28/08(Sun)20:34 No.2439705
What about those poor fuckers in the south who can't afford cable?

The coax cable itself will actually act as an antenna. A really good one at that.

HOWEVER - You'll probably need a digital converter box anyway

the FCC sold most of those airwaves to verison for several million
because they purchased so much of the availible airwaves they do have to make some of it availible for everyone
whether they plan on making some crazy good cellphone service or nationwide wireless internet it is far better than TV's holding on to it
    >> Anonymous 12/28/08(Sun)20:45 No.2439756
Is the OP actually bored enough to troll people who don't have digita cable?

    YES ALL CONSUME CONSUME CONSUME!!!

Where I live, basic cable is $60/mo and has like ten channels. The next tier is $100/mo and I'm a goddamn grad student. Fuck you, cable, I'll just pirate the fuck out of you and your mom.
    >> Anonymous 12/28/08(Sun)21:32 No.2440017

You might want to look into that. For my area, what most people think of as "basic" cable is actually "standard" cable. But there's actually a "basic" package that costs less than $10 a month. They're actually surprised if you ask for it.
    >> Anonymous 12/28/08(Sun)21:33 No.2440030
    >>2440003
I can get super basic with 60 channels & fast internet under $100.00 a month were I live. Sucks to be you faggot.

    Will I still get NBC?
    >> Anonymous of College Park,MD 12/28/08(Sun)21:42 No.2440064
There are also people living in certain areas (such as the boonies) that can't get cable (because the cable company refuses to install the service) or can't get Satellite tv because they can't get a clear view of the south sky, including that they can't get any digital tv reception. That there is a triple wammy.

The DTV transition date needs to be delayed, until 2011.
