Troll psychology: Why do trolls enjoy trolling?
Why do pranksters enjoy pranks? What is their reward system?
    >> Anonymous 12/14/08(Sun)19:44:04 No.2439316
people are dicks and they do stupid shit because they're dicks.

    that's it.

    trolling is a art.

I enjoy it on /b/ because that place is shit anyway. Here, I don't troll.
    >> Anonymous 12/14/08(Sun)19:47:04 No.2439337
Sometimes I can't help it. I see the chance to make a stupid troll statement and I go for it. Maybe it's because I think that, if I say it, then the person who said it doesn't mean it, and that makes me feel better about how stupid 99% of you are.

i enjoy the pleasure i get from pissing off people online! IRL however i enjoy playing pranks on others that will scare them or make them go wtf? but nothing to piss them off as i only play pranks on my friends
but i do like to prank call people irl and i enjoy pissing them off as i do not know them or they are enemies of a friend
(there are always exceptions as some people are TOO NICE to troll irl or online)

Because I'm doing a personal study on rhetoric as it relates to the internet. The anonymity of 4chan allows people to behave in whatever way they see fit, as opposed to other forums which advocate the construction of an online identity or persona, along with a reputation.

The general purpose is to study how people provoke and be provoked by words. I don't particularly enjoy watching 100 posts accumulate in a thread whose topic is on abortion.
    >> Anonymous 12/14/08(Sun)20:07:45 No.2439530
the naivety of the OP implies that out of hundreds, this is not one of the trolling topics tonight.

there's several on the top page right now, i won't bother to point them out, either you know or you need to lurk moar.

in the end, it's up to anons own intuition and discernment to tell which are which and why the individual concerned chooses to do it.

go look at the top page, then skim through to pg. 10, marking out for yourself those you think are trolling, who their audience is and why they feel obliged to piss in the ocean.

    put simply, lurk moar.

I think that as regards anonymity, a majority of anons are really nice in life and balance that by being mean on the internet to let the tiny voice of hate that they stifle IRL a forum to unleash itself

What way do you mean 'passive aggressive'? Isn't that a generalisation of trolling rather than just one of the motivations in our arsenal? We do it for a number of reasons, and incredibly aggressively at times.

basically, I take people at their word now unless the troll is blatantly obvious and lacks internal consistency. Even if that person is a troll, there's a high likelihood that someone else truly holds those beliefs.

it's important not to become too paranoid on here and start believing everyone is a troll, at that point you've lost the point of coming to this board: interacting with others. try not to be the intellectual equivalent of a faggot hiding a cave in Idaho with an arsenal because everyone looks like a government agent.

constant fear of criticism or being tricked kills creativity and new ideas. outside perspectives provide us other angles in which to see ourselves and ideas.

in closing, trolls provide an unintentional service as a way for someone to better learn how to defend their arguments or ideas.

I like your summation ol'buddy but I disagree when you say that
    >constant fear of criticism or being tricked kills creativity and new ideas

Necessity being the Mother of Invention, I think that a decent troll drops nurturing piles of manure every time he takes a shit all over my opinion and rather than stifling my creativity (and I think you would agree, yours), only accelerates our ability to reason well.

one night a few months ago, I posted a short story that appeared in the New York Times literary section. The piece was well-written and at the end I attributed the story to its source.

Anons were highly critical, finding plenty perceived flaws. In general, I hold that the criticisms thrown by anon lack credibility and for the most part disregard it, growing callouses I guess, since it's easier for people to criticize than do something. Anon in general is not a reliable source, though there are a few here that have surprised me.

If I was feeling especially truculent, i would not only deride you for the utilisation of an identifying mark, but also for feeling so insecure as to pick a random NYT article with which to defend your argument and also your good name.

If i was more inclined toward benevolence, I would tell of my multiple trips for many a varied occasion, one of which representing the actual me.

I'm feeling like a bit of a dick tonight, so piss off ya failfag, I haven't got time to talk to you and read this very edumacational article elsewhere, I'm out.

trolling was actually meant to extract information from individuals. You ask a stupid question you come up with stupid answers along those lines. When logical reason fails us, we resort to spamming for any type of generic response. While people try to be clever, they really end up looking stupid.

They funny part about everything though is that when you isolate yourself to one medium, you only see it from that perspective. If you look outside the box, you realize where the information is actually going. I post a lot of information to see where it goes. I have to tell you. It scares me sometimes. A lot of important people actually frequent this site. A lot of morons do too. For instance, there are a lot of comedy sites or viral sites and you see shit pop up there all the time. It's kind of pathetic.

    Right, I'm back in.

If that was you AM, then thanks, it's a fun read.

As to my opinion, when did i ever say it was valid and for that matter, where did we seek to justify my behaviour?
    >IT'S MI CHAN, I CAN DO WHAT I WAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!
I'm Anonymous, I can wax lyrical on Ironman > Batman or empathise with a genuine need.

If I can't measure my response in words, then the choice is to become the more capable communicator I aspire to, or alternatively scream LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLTROOOOOOOOLD.

If my sincerity isn't apparent to the reader, (well mainly it's his flaw), but I can either address it or leave well enough alone.
