I have a serious question...I think r9k is a pretty good idea as frankly I find myself looking over the same thing daily on the internet and just keep coming across the same thing again and again.

However, places such as /b/ have become famous for their memes and I was wondering:

'Is it possible to create a meme on /r9k/?'

Considering that only original content can exist how is it possible for a meme to be cemented into the community of this board?

Then again if you do not care or want memes which can help stamp your place in the internet this does not matter at all
    >> Anonymous 12/13/08(Sat)15:08:12 No.2427607
I dunno, but i think the chances of the meme getting repetitive and dull are slim...

Though I hope we don't get as bad as /b/
    >> Anonymous 12/13/08(Sat)15:09:02 No.2427612
Nahhh, but I don't think this is the place for memes really...
    >> Anonymous 12/13/08(Sat)15:09:25 No.2427616
At its most simple level, a "meme" is simple reproduction of the same material. /b/ does this through copying, /r9k/ could do it through slight alteration. For example, if we had a thread of "Obama ______ _______, because he's a nigger." We could repeat that ad libitum spawning a "meme" without simply reposting something like "ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWAH" endlessly.
    >> Anonymous 12/13/08(Sat)15:09:43 No.2427621

    >>2427621

    dunno....

But would the fear of getting muted or banned for not having completely original content prevent some people from responding to things, meaning only forced memes can prevail?
    >> Anonymous 12/13/08(Sat)15:13:14 No.2427651
    >>2427626

Well, that's an arbitrary example, but in theory yes. If we apply a "meme" to the real world. It could be that the conventional greeting is changed from "hi" into naming the color of the other person's shirt. So now a single unique greeting has transformed into a multiple option variable that functions essentially the same way.

So the last series of posts have led me to think that any variation upon "Mute block" at the end of the message is a kind of unique "meme" to /r9k/. In this case it is functioning as a calling card that you belong to a group of individuals that only frequents this board. If you posted as such on /b/, for example, only those people who view both boards would recognize it. Similarly to referring to Pepsi or Coke as "Soda" or "Pop". It only makes sense in some contexts, as conditioned by the surrounding culture.
    >> Anonymous 12/13/08(Sat)15:17:27 No.2427685
Let me apply the Fermi Paradox here....

If a meme is possible in being created on /r9k/, then why haven't we witnessed this?

OP here, I think you may be onto a point. The meme is something that reaches general consensus and understanding, not necessary a line being repeated endlessly. The mute block and even the term robots instead of guys or something

    >>2427651 as in your point

It may be we have memes but that are strictly restricted to the /r9k/ community as it would be nonsensical to other online communities

I like /r9k/ memes because people know about them but they don't fucking spam them like crazy. Until a thread like this comes up and we spam all the memes and then everyone gets pissed off and we don't use the memes again for another few weeks.

Hmmm I can't rule out a proper meme ever emerging from here (ie Advice dog, longcat and other funnyoncecrap) but due to the filter I believe it can't become overrun much like /b/. Though i'm surprised by the lack of the other negative aspects that /b/ brings apart from repeated crap

It's merely profiling, my friend. The same person who is not creative enough to expand past imitating other people's ideas, i.e. advice dog, longcat, etc., is also frustrated by getting muted. Thus that person will inevitably either leave back to /b/ or just watch, or lurk, /r9k/.

    meme

    (noun)

1 : an idea, belief or belief system, or pattern of behavior that spreads throughout a culture either vertically by cultural inheritance (as by parents to children) or horizontally by cultural acquisition (as by peers, information media, and entertainment media)

2 : a pervasive thought or thought pattern that replicates itself via cultural means; a parasitic code, a virus of the mind especially contagious to children and the impressionable

3 : the fundamental unit of information, analogous to the gene in emerging evolutionary theory of culture
    - meme pool (n.) : all memes of a culture or individual
    - memetic (adj.) : relating to memes
    - memetics (n.) : the study of memes

4 : in blogspeak, an idea that is spread from blog to blog

5 : an internet information generator, especially of random or contentless information

It is unique to our culture. Memes seem to be used to differential different social groups from outsiders. Much like a password. If you don't have the password, you are excluded. See any "newfag" references from /b/. It seems a similar rite of passage is participating in a relationship thread on /r9k/.

    >> Anonymous 12/13/08(Sat)15:53:33 No.2427964

Yeah, the meme isn't just the relationship thread as such, but that /r9k/ is full of them. It's a (sometimes true) in-joke.

    >>2427942

Now this is why memes don't spawn on /r9k/. If there is any form of imitation it is immediately squashed as being unintellectual. /r9k/ has its head so far up its own ass being elitist that it won't allow a meme to develop because that would be too /b/-like. Communication begins with imitation, robots, you must allow it to develop naturally or stop complaining about its lack of development.

That is the joy of /b/. If you are among retards you have no fear of criticism, as none of their opinions matter. Here, much like in college, there are a bunch of pseudo-intellectuals and real intellectuals that you have to impress in order to have value.

I like that about /r9k/. /r9k/ HAS memes, but you don't hear that much about them too much because of that sort of elitist suppression that exists. Therefore, a well-placed "A LOT OF DUDES" still has the opportunity to make me laugh, instead of making me rage about overuse of a shitty meme.
