Does anyone else post here but isn't into anime? I know 4chan was originally intended to discuss anime, but I've never been into it (well, I'm into /h/ and /d/, but not actual anime) and I've been here for...must be going on 3 years now. I mean, I used to watch Yugioh like 6 years ago, but I kind of grew out of that. I guess I've just never really 'got' the big deal about it.

I used to be all hardcore otaku and stuff but this past year it just doesn't appeal to me as much

maybe it's because most of it is set in high school which I'm already out of for 3 years now

    I dunno

    Anime is awesome.

I'm not into it. But it is.

If someone linked a good one, I'd check it out.

but the thing is, what makes anime better than conventional tv shows? Do they share similar types of stories? I always thought of it as an art style rather than a media type, so to speak.

I grew up in JP and I hate anime. Oh so much. The only anime I like is the classic comedy ones, like Baki Bon and Lupin
    >> Anonymous 12/12/08(Fri)21:15:55 No.2420550
I used to really like anime. I still do really appreciate it, I just don't watch it that much at all. Every now and then I'll get one of my Serial Experiments: Lain, Cowboy Bebop, or Outlaw Star DVDs out and watch them, it's usually when I'm really high and have nothing else to do.

True, but it has some differences.

One, it's Japanese. The cultural zeitgeist is inherantly different. (Humor, character development, references, etc)

Two, it's usually more fantastical i.e.: impossible situations, funny expressions, bizarre non-sequiturs.

Three, as you mentioned, the art style.

    Two,

That's because the normal growth pattern dictates that you get over that shit after high school. Your body has followed that natural path.

    That's my hypothesis, anyway.

go ask /g/ or something, /r9k/ is a lot more 'general public' people, the other boards tend to house the really weeaboo weirdos that 4chan originally housed.

I haven't watched anime for 8 years. And that was pokemon when I was 11-12
    >> Anonymous 12/12/08(Fri)21:19:32 No.2420574
I prefer anime to most American medias because of the effort that goes into it. Most US cartoons are done in flash and look like I could do it myself. Also, shitty humor and no such thing as an interesting story.

Most anime have interesting art styles (except for shit like Air. God I fucking hate that show) and good stories. Just try to imagine a show like Now and Then, Here and There being made in America. It would never happen, but it's one of the greatest things I've ever seen. Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of shit. Naruto, Bleach, AIR FUCKING AIR GOD DAMN IT AIR, there are more, but I can't think of any.

Yes I can. Angelic Layer, Daiguard (sp?), everything that /a/ talks about, the list goes on.

I've seen a few (gits, Akira, Miyazaki's stuff), read a few Mangas (Akira&Battle Angel Alita), but that's about it.

Loved anime from 6th-8th. Went to Otakon for the first time in 9th, met other people who liked anime and thought they were freaks but I still liked it enough to put up with them. 11th grade I got into Otakon for free and was pretty much sick of the fanbase. In 12th grade I couldn't get in for free and didn't want to pay to deal with the fanbase.

Now a junior in college, the fans caused me to lose interest.

The main difference is that anime is finite, or at least, it feels finite (with the exception of Dragonball Z). Anime, more so than regular television shows, follow the traditional three-act structure more closely. Characters have a goal, conflicts arise when they try to achieve it, and they finally accomplish it and the series is over.

American television is designed to keep the story going as long as new seasons are greenlit. The first act is generally pretty strong, and if they know beforehand the show is going to end, the third act is too. But because they don't know how long they have to tell the story, the second act flounders and meanders about for the most part.

Also, I never watched it cause I thought it was for nerds. Anime is still for losers, in my eyes. I guess I'll never grow out of that judgement :<

    >> Anonymous 12/12/08(Fri)21:24:51 No.2420616
I was never into anime but recently decided to try a few shows, and I quite liked it. Certainly not to the level of the stereotypical /a/ user, but I would no longer discount a film or series purely because it was an anime.
    >> Anonymous 12/12/08(Fri)21:25:50 No.2420625
I've watched about an hour of anime my entire life. I think it was called like Death Note or something. It actually wasn't too bad.

I could have very concisely summarized it as: American serial dramas are character-driven, anime is plot-driven.

Sitcoms don't count when comparing American TV to anime, since they're entirely different formats.

I kind of think like that, I know it's closed minded but I can't help when I see some guy on a forum with an avatar of a cute little anime girl I think it's weird.

Actually, the quality of American animation is almost always way, way higher than anime. The average TV anime runs at 8 frames per second, which is the bare minimum needed to make an object appear to move. In comparison, TV cartoons over here run at 30 frames per second.

Let me guess: Japan doesn't take advantage of cheap Korean animation studios to do the grunt-work frame-by-frames.

You are a boob, American animation has lots and lots of stylistic variety and dozens upon dozens of different humor niches plus a fairly strong independent animation scene as well as ~80 years worth of completly pioneering and revolutionary animation.

Most eastern animation is composed of the same three or four slightly different stylistic cliches and 90% of it reeks of poor production values, especially the TV shows. Not to mention the dominance of crappy action themes and cutesy fan service type shit.

Not that there isn't good eastern animation but the mass production and large market tend to make everything blur into a glutted mass of plot and art cliches that only serve to feed the ravenous anime machine that continually gobbles up the same crap over and over again. Sickening.

When i started with the animus, fansubs had barely started hitting torrents and most of it was on IRC. Hell, I still have an old copy of Marmalade Boy I copied on VHS from a friend.
Anyway, once I got DSL I would download everything under the sun and since I didn't exactly have anything pressing to do (lol, college freshman) I spent it watching anime and found which sucked, which didn't.
I read up on the culture and found it interesting on how it was represented in an animated form. Ditto for manga.

Fastforward to now. This season I'm keeping up with three shows. Hyakko cause it seems to be the spiritual successor to Azumanga Daioh, Toradora just to be an ass to a certain friend of mine, and Michiko to Hatchin cause that one plays out like a mix of GoodCop/BadCop, Bonnie&Clyde, and old westerns. Plus, Shinichiro Watanabe is involved in it and his shows before have been really well made.

So you could say that my taste in what I watch have grown up rather than grow out of a certain medium.

    Motherfuckin' This!
Can't stand US TV when they do this. Look at weeds. It went downhill fast in the second season. Same thing for Heroes (yeah, yeah, bad example) and most other stuff is reality-based shit.

Due to that How I Met Your Mother, Chuck and SG:Atlantis are the only ones I follow anymore and the only reason I follow Atlantis is because it's completely over after this season is done.

    >>2420626
We need more plot in our entertainment. One that doesn't drag. I mean, seriously, how much CSI does a person really need?

    >>2420646
How many episodes would you like to watch.
There's some decent shows in the 6ep and 12ep ranges and One Piece is bloody awesomely hilarious Power-Of-Friendship type show but it's somewhere in the 400ep range and it still hasn't hit the middle.

it's well-known that anime has always just been tight-budgeted and low-quality...there really is no comparison with stuff like disney.
    >> Anonymous 12/12/08(Fri)21:53:51 No.2420840
I use to be big on anime, but now I just watch a few series a year. I'm really selective in what series I watch. I'm not going to watch something just because it's anime.

Princess Mononoke cost over 5billion yen and I would consider that better than any Disney piece of shit.

I'm not really into anime, to respond to OP, i hate most animes just there are some like Ghibli films, Akira, Cowbody Bebop etc which are works of art and define the genre for me.

However, whereas most children loved Disney whilst growing up, i have always loathed it in every way and sometimes i'm not even sure why.

There are still some Western animations which i do like for instance the Lion King was the shit (dunno if that was Disney or not, either way it rocked) but i like very few animations and the few that i do enjoy are mainly animes.
