26 KB The Freedom Tower is shit Anonymous 12/12/08(Fri)20:42:25 No.2420285
It's only 1,776 ft tall while Burj Dubai will be 2,684 ft. It's not really an improvement from the original towers. Hell, even rebuilding them exactly as they were would have been better than this piece of crap.

I don't care how patriotic you are, the Twin Towers were the ugliest megaskyscrapers in the world. Sure the Freedom Tower(s) will be massive eyesores, but at least they have some form of design.

I say we build 2 Burj Dubais and stack them, to have a 5,368 Mega Burj Dubai!
    >> Anonymous 12/12/08(Fri)20:49:35 No.2420357
Pretty much every building in Dubai (or the world, for that matter) including Burj Dubai is being designed primarily by American engineers. The only reason dubai has massive buildings is because a couple of billionares can afford it, and the height of a country's buildings reflect nothing about their global power.

Freedom Tower is still shit though, I'll totally agree.

It'll be funny when Dubai runs out of money.

They could have rebuilt the Twin Towers.

One of my friends is an architect on a project in Dubai. Her firm is American, but almost exclusively works on projects in the UAE. She said there's like a really strange subculture of American/European architects in the city, because so many projects are run by foreign firms.

Also somewhat on topic, one of our clients has offices in the top of the newly completed WTC 7 building. You can get pretty much a birds eye view of the Freedom tower site, and it's a complete mess. They're still excavating in areas, and haven't even fully rebuilt the PATH train tunnel walls, so you can see the trains snaking through the site.

On the plus side, the views from there are truly epic. From all directions.

Like I said. Ugliest thing in the sky supported only by idiots who say "if we don't rebuild a 40-year-old eyesore exactly as 40-year-old technology and 60s ultra-utilitarian design made it then the terrorists win."

    Yes it does.

    No not really.

Dubai speculated too fucking much on real estate and backed it with the oil prices. Even if OPEC cuts, there is no guarantee the amount of demand destruction will be outpaced by supply reduction and they might even end up losing market shares if nobody is able to pay for the higher price of oil that results. Plus higher oil price = less sold, etc. Now would be an okay time to prepare for dancing on Dubai's grave.

tl;dr Dubai is fucked, it's going to run out of money.

The buildings were pulled in the first place because the maintenance costs were fucking the shit out of whoever owned them.

The idea that Dubai runs solely or mostly on oil is a myth.

They should just build a runway.
Then if they try the same shit twice...textbook landing

Dubai is already planning for a post-oil Middle East. I can assure you, spend some time there, and you'll agree.
