What does /r9k/ think about students getting thier G.E.D. early? I have three friends in the past year who have decided they are just going to get thier G.E.D and finish high school early.

I think this is an incredibly stupid idea. Even if you're getting it early, you're still showing people that you can't complete 4 years of education.

One friend recieved her G.E.D. early a few years ago, but her life expectancy is around 30, so she's got a decent reason at least.

Another friend dropped out and later got his G.E.D. He has applied for 85 jobs, from retail to warehouse to office to who knows what else, and has not once recieved a call.

TL;DR, what does /r9k/ think about students getting thier G.E.D.s and graduating early?

its not exactly the best economy to be trying to circumvent the relatively tried and true highschool college route

I don't understand why you're even asking this. If you're not going to university, then you are a loser and a faggot so it doesn't matter if you have a GED, QZEP or JKLPRDFEFG because you won't have a university degree.

early grad fag here, high school is worthless in college you might learn something useful

General Equivalency Diploma. If you drop out of high school or something, you can get this by taking a few tests to show you're as smart as the average high school student.

    They're called GCSEs now.
And it's more america's equivilent of A levels, although it is far less focused and probably worth the same as GCSEs in britfagia.
    >> Anonymous 12/12/08(Fri)10:21:08 No.2415295
look, if you dropped out of highschool there are ways to get an actual diploma. GED's are good if you always want some sort of shame when you talk about it.
    >> Anonymous 12/12/08(Fri)10:32:17 No.2415378
A high school diploma isn't worth anything anyway. Good luck getting ANY job without a degree.

Shit, it took my useless electronic engineering degree to get me a job at AT&T, doing NOTHING related to engineering.

No the job is not fun, easy, or good by any stretch of the imagination. I can be fired if someone within earshot of me swears. Seriously.

If I wanted to get most of the building shitcanned, I could just stand up, scream FUUUUUUUUUUUCK, and walk out.

Take classes over the summer and graduate a year early.

    Your friends are idiots.

What the christ? That sounds like a total piece of shit job. Then again, you did apply to a piece of shit company.

If even people with engineering degrees are having trouble finding a job of any sort... how the hell is anyone else gonna succeed? Is this cause of a crappy job market, or is the increasing education requirements for a position screwing everything up?

    >Even if you're getting it early, you're still showing people that you can't complete 4 years of education.
That's stupid. If you can do something quicker than the mandate, why not do it? If they're able to get their G.E.D. without completing high school, and use that to go on to college, more power to them. Companies don't give a shit about high school, only college; unless they're trying to go straight into the work-force, having a G.E.D. won't mean shit.

If someone is able to graduate university in three years by doing online courses and individual study, would you call them dropouts?
    >> Anonymous 12/12/08(Fri)15:40:17 No.2417513
    >>2417492

no because, i assume, they'd have an actual proper degree, not some shitty equivalence diploma no-one gives a shit about.
    >> Anonymous 12/12/08(Fri)15:44:59 No.2417546
I dropped out of high school in 10th grade. Went over to my brother's house every day, studied for a couple of hours and got up to college level in science, math and then learned whatever else that would make it easier. I was already up to that level in reading and writing.

I took my COMPASS (placement test) and got in at college level and started taking courses. Got my GED when I turned 18. I now work at an office job at 12 an hour, which is high for my area (Eastern Washington).

It was definitely the route to go for me. I recommend it if you're smart. Otherwise you probably need high school, you dumb fuck.
    >> Anonymous 12/12/08(Fri)15:45:26 No.2417548
a G.E.D. is the wrong course to take if you're looking to graduate early. Just take high school courses over the summer or even skip a grade if you're smart enough.

Emotionally you might not be ready for college life, but whatev.

a GED is more like O levels then As. America doesn't have anything that directly equates to A levels except for a 2 year AA degree, which is actually higher then A levels.

A levels would be grade 13 in the US, which doesn't exist.
    >> Anonymous 12/12/08(Fri)15:49:36 No.2417578
I got my GED and basically fucked around from 17-25 before I went to college. Got a BS, did some masters work and everything worked out fine.

No Prom tho. I cant figure out if I missed anything or not.
    >> Anonymous 12/12/08(Fri)15:50:19 No.2417585
It depends on what you do afterward.

My friend left high school early because of family problems and got her GED. She then did 2 years at a community college and is now finishing up her bachelor's at university with a good reputation.

It can get you into college or trade school much quicker but if you're going straight into the workforce, you're an idiot to think that employers will see you as a self-motivated individual who finished high school early.
