In Atlanta's trendy Buckhead district, amidst the pubs, boutiques and fashionable eateries, lurks a company building an animated feature that just might get Hollywood to sit up and take notice -- figuratively, of course.

The company is Fathom Studios and the film is "Delgo," a feature described by producer Marc Adler as "an animated fantasy adventure set in a magical world with action, humor and romance. It combines the epic visual style of 'Lord of the Rings' with the original comedy of 'Shrek.'"

The sad and unfortunate dying gasps of American 2-D animation have created an insatiable demand for cartoons driven by binary code. In the wake of the Pixar/Disney split, a film like "Delgo" has incredible potential.

The fact a film this epic and ambitious can be made in Georgia and still compete is an eye-opener.

That "Delgo" is packed to the gills with a top-grade voice cast takes the whole package to the next level for Adler and his crew.

"In many cases, like with Chris Kattan, their improvisations were so good we changed lines and even scenes," the producer says. "With actors like Freddie Prinze Jr., Jennifer Love Hewitt, Michael Clarke Duncan and Kelly Ripa, you can't help but be moved by their performances. We've read these lines on paper hundreds of times, but their delivery of the lines always got the laughs or tears out of us. They've taken the film far beyond our initial expectations."

Those tears might be tears of joy when the underdog "Delgo" finally hits theaters, because while Hollywood can sometimes take a beastly shape, it's always looking for that next big thing.

The release of a bad animated feature such as "Delgo" at this time of year probably is aimed at kids with time suddenly on their hands, along with parents exhausted from the pressures of shopping for those same kids.

But regardless of the excuse, there's no good reason for movies like this to be made, and unsuspecting audiences should give themselves options. Hauling out fireplace ashes, for instance, and sprinkling them on the snow above next year's garden will provide anyone from 7 to 70 with greater satisfaction, if not joy.

But "Delgo" is here and it probably will, like a neighbor's obnoxious brother-in-law, hang around for a few weeks. I'm reasonably content knowing I won't have to sit through it again, but I'll try to relate some observations about it before they drift off into cyberspace.

Judging by his appearance, the title character seems to have been inspired by an unfamiliar species, or thick asparagus. Along with others in the film, virtuous and villainous, he has a face like a partially formed terrapin -- a mouth with sharp edges rather than lips.

The rest of his face indicates how the people at Fathom Studios innitially may have wanted characters like those in the "Planet of the Apes" series, with tight fur and big spaces between the pushed-in nose and the puckered mouth. They decided to keep the latter expression but opted for pointy, smooth plastic.

The computer animation process that moves the characters around doesn't improve their appearance, nor does it cover up a lousy script. Every scene seems borrowed from Disney or George Lucas or even Shakespeare, but never used for any new advantage.

The overall story is familiar hokum featuring new names that seem to have been formed by shaking up letters from a Scrabble box.
