This film was edited to make the people they were filming look like total morons. Yes, the people probably were morons, but probably not to the extent that the filmmakers would want you to believe.

This film is incredibly biased, and it reeks from the very beginning.

    This is NOT objective filmmaking.

filmmaking is never objective, because the second you get into editing, you make decisions on what to show the audience based on your subjective tastes/opinion.

hysterical that people are so dumb - scary that people are so dumb.

the part that had me rolling on the floor (in laughter) was when the little kid (couldn't have been more then say 7 or so?) said that he "was looking for more out of life"... please. at that age was he already so downtrodden with everyday life etc etc...

also funny - the part with the leader of the evan church in colorado springs... this was filmed BEFORE the news broke that that guy was a gay pole smoker!!! DOH!!!!! and he ended up stepping down from the leadership role of that church...

oh yeah, and the part with the GW Bush cardboard cut out... priceless.

I see this thread on here too often, but here I go anyway...

I went to one of these camps when I was in 10th grade. Every single night you go to a large auditorium and some charismatic preacher yells at you about how horrible, horrible, horrible you are and how at the same time God loves loves loves you so much. So you all start BAWWWWWING and the next thing you know you're at the altar spewing tears and begging for forgiveness from some shit you did that really wasn't that horrible.

By the end of the trip, you're psyched to convert the world and most of the guys and girls are now "dating"--well, they're paired off--and then within two weeks you're sitting at your computer jacking off to jpgs of Jenna Jameson like you always do except you're pissing because all your church camp friends are getting handjobs from the girls on the trip.

tl;dr They promote faith based on emotion and not at all on reason.

And as for dishonest filmmaking, remember that Godard said every cut is a lie.

I mean, come on, how can you take the bible seriously, it's such nonsense LOLCOSMICZOMBIEJESUS SO RANDUM XD! yet people eat this up as fact and often this prevents the earth's population from actually getting smarter with bullshit like creationism. Religion should be a personal belief that you keep to yourself, and not a substitute for politics or science, and this is why the religious right fails so hard imo.

I live in the shithole south and have only had to deal with hardcore fundies a few times in my life. Believe it or not, most of the local bible thumpers keep to themselves. Of course, it helps that I keep to myself and my family (most of them) have a live and let live attitude. That's not to say that the thumpers don't think I'm going to hell, they just don't bother me with their opinions. For that reason, I don't bother them with my opinions. Live and let live.

I know it's different for some. I've had friends that grew up in some nightmare situations when it came to fundamentalism, but I have, so far, lucked out and dodged the fringe element.

No, I'm from North Georgia. Same shit, though. The South is overrun with fundies. I know as many fundies or lapsing fundies than I know non-fundies. And I only met rational, reasonable, sensible atheists and agnostics (read: not agnostics who are agnostic for the sake of pissing off mommy and daddy or the Whole World) when I went to college.

These camps for the little kids are bad, but the real hardcore ones get you during or just after puberty, when sex and peer pressure are your main preoccupations. Then, BAM. For guys: no sex, no masturbating, no drinking or drugs. For girls: no sex, no masturbating, stop being little whores and gossiping. It really is mind-control. I have become a kind of Christian agnostic, maybe a Christian agnostic Gnostic, if that makes sense. If any religion is real, I think it's the bare-bones message of Christ, but not the establishment(s) that has grown up around it.

However, I don't know any reasonable men or women who have accepted fundamentalist faith. It is nakedly, boldly even, irrational.

Can't believe this thread is still front page.

You're right about the fundies going to Bible colleges. The fundies who go to major universities either freak the fuck out and overindulge in everything that's laid on their table--sex, drugs, skipping far too much class--or they huddle together in sheer horror at the immorality of their peers and spend all their waking hours at a campus ministry.

Concerning the money: In the South fundamentalism knows no socioeconomic class. I know upper-middle-class families who believe the earth is only 5,000 years old. And I know trailer trash fucktards who believe that dinosaur bones were placed on the earth by Satan to tempt our faith. Big business latches onto fundamentalism because the fundamentalists believe in anarcho-capitalism (and yet they want to see a fundie theocracy established in America; they're all idiots). And this half-anarchist, half-totalitarian impulse is met in the furrowed, neanderthal brow of George W. Bush, who believes everything should be privatized AND that there was literally a Garden of Eden where a snake walked upright and talked and a white man wore a fig leaf in lieu of boxer shorts.
