Is social anxiety a recent thing /r9k/?

It seems like it's only become abundant in the last 20 years or so?
    >> Anonymous 04/18/12(Wed)15:28:33 No.2159250
Man, that girl has no tits at all.
    What a disappointment.

    Hnnnnauugh

Also no, social anxiety is not a recent development like autism (which IS, it's not just "more commonly diagnosed", it's literally new genetic mutations)
It's just that you've got an outlet for yourself so you don't have to actually try and socialize (the internet), so you end up fearing it more and more and more.

I've got some bad news for you
    >> Anonymous 04/18/12(Wed)15:33:14 No.2159292
You can tell she's not enjoying herself at all. Poor thing.

Anyway, social anxiety has always been a thing, but the sudden influx of it is mainly due to our obsession with technology combined with our sedentary lifestyles. If you spend all of your time talking to people on the Internet in any way you please, you're going to be made anxious of face-to-face socialization.

    This post is correct post.

Modern society is inherently alienating in that it destroys unmediated social relationships (actually going out and talking to people) and replaces them with mediated social relationships (talking to people through a screen).

There are a number of things to blame for this beyond the sudden explosion of telecommunications technology, but that's the gist of it anyway.

They used to call it being "shy". Of course it's not recent. You can get shy cats and dogs.
    >> Anonymous 04/18/12(Wed)15:54:55 No.2159451
No. There have been plenty of shut-ins for longer than that. They just had books and no internet to complain upon.

I think it's only become medicalised in about the last twenty years. It used to be called shyness and people thought an appropriate cure for it was saying

    >Don't be shy

    which was plainly super-helpful

sigh. yes i understand that part. I was wondering if you could prove that autism is a new mutation and wasn't around a few hundred years ago.

If you're going to make a claim like that i assume you have some reason to do so

There have been hermits and recluses going back forever. They just got ignored unless they were a celebrity recluse like Howard Hughes.

No. Everything we feel and do is the same as it's been for thousands of years, there is poetry from the ancient egypt over 3000 years old about heart-break, suicide, etc. Heraclitus was a loner and hated everyone, Diogenes of Sinope was an eccentric loner. Read some fucking history and you'll see that no matter how far you go back we have barely if at all changed, we are just surrounded by technology. That's it.

    >Heraclitus was a loner and hated everyone, Diogenes of Sinope was an eccentric loner.
Except they weren't loners at all, they had social contact every day, they had disciples, they were active in the community and so on. They weren't isolated like a modern foreveralone loser is, not even nearly as much.
    >> Anonymous 04/18/12(Wed)16:19:35 No.2159588
    >>2159562
I think the likely reason we don't know of any historical foreveralone losers isn't that they weren't around, but rather that they were foreveralone losers. Let's face it. None of us is going to make it into the history books either.

Yep. Makes me rage when I see people who obviously weren't such (given that they have records about their existence, which I'm pretty sure none of us will have) being called such by normalfags.

    >But an unusual if short-lived and not extensive fad arose in eighteenth-century England. Men of eccentric bent and material substance took up the practice of installing on the grounds of their estates an "ornamental hermit." An ornamental hermit was not a real hermit, as the name suggests. An ornamental hermit was a man employed by the estate-owner to reside in a contrived hermitage for a period of time and make scheduled appearances on the grounds to the pleasure of the employer and to be seen and marveled at by guests.

It looks so simple to do but I know I won't try anything "alpha" like that the first few times I fuck, I feel like I'd fuck it up somehow.

Am I right in my thinking or just lack self-esteem?
