3 KB American Television vs. British Television Anonymous of College Park,MD 10/22/08(Wed)15:02 No.2038743
British Television, despite having to pay a TV License wins by default due to great variety of programs other than entertainment and the BBC. Why can't American TV (and PBS) be this good?

    Discuss if you disagree.

    (inb4 USA! USA!)

I suppose you're right seeing as how American television series are watched all over the world. Surely it must suck.

Can't we like both? Both have some good and some bad.

Yes. I've been to Britain to visit my relatives in 2006 and the summer of this year.

    >>2038758
Yeah, and you know what really sucks, the only British programing available in the US (excluding the format remakes of Life on Mars and the office) are on PBS (Old Britcoms help bring baby boomers to the network for the pledge drives) and BBC America (commercials every five minutes and programs censored to be suitable for children, despite the fact that adults pay for cable).

England, where the television sucks so badly that the government charges its citizens for it.

    1. American TV networks only import the good shows, not the mountains of shit we make
    2. BBC America shows programmes made by other UK broadcasters that make it look better.

British sitcoms are great. Unfortunatly they don't hold a candle to American sitcoms because the series are so short and low-budgetted.

Well, not since Discovery, History, A&E and The Learning Channel became mundane reality TV hellholes, anyway.

I'm going to list off the three main reasons why PBS used to be the best publicly-funded thing on the air. This lineup beats the damned pants off anything they've had since and anything any other station could bring to bear against it.

    -Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood.
-The "Science Alliance" (Bill Nye, Kratt Brothers, Newton's Apple, Square One, Carmen Sandiego, ZOOM, Reading Rainbow, all the other good educational shows)
-The Red Green Show (Canadian, yes, but everyone loves Red Green)

I would have liked to include Shining Time Station in there as that was a major, major part of my childhood as well, but since we seem to be focused on battling lineups then I guess I can't.

British TV wins for me anyday. A major factor being the American commercial breaks. Why the fuck is there a break before the credits roll? What the shit! Also SKY 1 imports the best drama from the US the same week it airs there so it's not like us Brits miss anything amazing.

As an Irishfag, I like to think of myself as occupying the middle ground, and I gotta say to the Americans, while you have some great shows with high production values such as LOST, and entertaining shows such as South Park (inb4 troll), British tv is generally of a far higher quality. Britain, mainly BBC and Channel 4, spawned many superb programs such as Top Gear, Planet Earth, Horizon, etc. Just last week I was watching an awesome and informative show presented by James May about alternate energy solutions. You don't get programmes of that calibre on US tv.
Also what the fuck is up with ad-breaks every 5 minutes America? Srsly, it's annoying as hell, especially since your ads are mainly so terrible and cheesy.

True, and you won't get that same type of quality from the A&E networks and most of the Discoverty networks anymore. They've been infected by reality tv craze.

The only way that American TV can be remade to British standards is if we abolish the Telecommunications Act of 1996 and make the next broadcasting law modeled after the 1980 Broadcasting Act (UK). Because as I see it the Digital Television in the US will fail because of lack of actual new channels (unless you like PBS).

Also ITT: The Digital Television in the US vs. Digital Television in Britian.

Good for you, sadly for everyone else (read:America), to get the real good British stuff other than what's offered by BBC America and PBS you have to seek out Torrenting websites (read: thepiratebay)

But also true is that you get less commercials on British television especially on imported American programing.
