Since I see this pop up so often, Lets have yet another Job getting advice thread. The number one complaint I see from people is that they've put in a bunch of applications but no one calls. You have to realize, this is all a subversive mind game. The reason those help wanted signs are up is not because they're necessarily hiring, It means they want a pool of applicants to draw from with their high turnover.

So, i will give you the single most important tip for job hunting.

CALL THEM. THEY WILL NEVER CALL YOU.
Managers are people too, and they hate having to go through applications. they won't until the last minute. If you call them, You're basically forcing them into action. It doesn't hurt your chances. In fact it helps, because they'll remember you as the only one assertive enough to actually pursue the job.

Pic unrelated, I'm just posting it until you like it.

OP is right. My last job was a gas station with very high turn over. We constantly had hiring signs up and over 9000 people came in every day to turn in applications, but we rarely had new people.

Bump because I'm sick of seeing people complaining about this.

A lot of employers don't even give you a number to contact them at. Especially craigslist posts. "Our company is looking for a secretary. Submit your resume blah blah blah." You submit shit and never hear from them. And you don't even know what the place is until you contact them. Even on sites like careerbuilder, a lot of entries will say "please do not contact us by phone". What am I supposed to do, go down to the office or something?

There is a huge boom where I live. My province has alot of oil and that industry is always expanding, and because of the nature of working on oil rigs (and the isolation you endure depending on the situation) you are paid well, VERY well. Kids fresh out of highschool who dont mind hard work can literally pull down 100k usd a year here easily.
As a result we have plenty of consumers throwing around money and creating new business and all busnisses have a small pool of labour to draw upon due to the lure from more lucrative industries where even an entry level job is good money.

Employers here call you back, leave messages, try again, and remind you about retention bonus's if only you will pick up that phone and come in and work!!!

Fuck this shit, man. That's what really bugged me about craigslist.

Craigslist is a good site though. I'm currently working in an airport and found the ad for the job on craigslist. Surprise surprise, I did have to call them back and ask about my application.
