I'd say go to /a/, but all they care about is what's out this season, and they bash just about every anime, no matter how good it is. I'm sure you can google popular anime and start there, learn what you like, and find more of the same genres. Get a bittorrent client of some sort and download from somewhere like nyaatorrents or bakabt. Also, do not be afraid of subtitles. There are lots of good shows out there that do not have an english dub.

Before the end of the livejournal era (read: after lj got jacked by aspies and furries), anime fans were actually cool as fuck.

Back when I was a seventeen year old boy, every weekend when I didn't have plans, which was quite a lot of weekends, I would head over to the anime club at the university.
The girls were English majors and graduate students, the boys were skaters or long haired stoners. We would eat pizza while watching Bubblegum Crisis and Bio Hunter on VHS (showing my age here) and we would play it up MST style (that stands for Mystery Science Theatre, not Moorish Science Temple, you dolts) and laugh it up like it was the funniest shit.
The language was profane, the people were chill as fuck, and nothing was sacred.
After we were done with anime club we would play frisbee in the dark of the night on the field or go out for a warm cup of coffee. I actually lost my virginity to a law student I met at the anime club.
