In 8th grade a friend of mine killed himself. He was fat and a little weird, so he got bullied a lot. I guess he had some problems at home, too. He hung himself with a belt a few weeks before his 14th birthday. I guess he didn't see any other way out.

The kids that bullied him were sad for about a week, then promptly forgot all about it. They probably don't even remember him now. But to me, that will always serve as a poignant personal reminder of the sort of harm that bullying can do.

I'm not sure that I support the school shooters, though - if for no other reason than that they, the victim, will still end up dead or in prison. The only good that can come from it is social change, but people are so bad at handling these kinds of things that I'm a little uneasy. I'm anticipating stricter and stricter anti-violence policies in schools, preventing any of these kids from ever standing up to the bullies and defending themselves.

Too many of my friends younger siblings/nieces/nephews went there. What was really eerie for all of us was how the kids handled it. Too young to remember Columbine, too young to give a shit about Virginia Tech. In all of the interviews they were basically laughing at the reporters for asking them questions, like, "How are you feeling now?" "Uhmmm, I guess, like, haha, okay? Like, it was kind of scary? But haha like it's okay now."

This. When I was at school some dickheads were bullying a guy who caught my bus. They were all older and tougher than me so I never did anything about it other than tell a teacher who brushed me off. Anyway, they made fun of this guy and taunted and heckled and pushed and shoved and fucked with this guy every single day on the bus after school and during school sometimes as well.

One day they threw a carton of yogurt at the back of his head and it exploded all over him. You too? As I grew older I thought my reaction to the whole 9/11 was because I was too young to understand; I was in middle school after all.

I just remember not caring - I thought, people die every day, how is this any different? I wasn't trying to be edgy or any thing, I just didn't care. Now that I'm older I understand it more, why it was important, but it still doesn't resonate an emotional impact on me.

What's weird, is now I want more. When ever I hear about a potential terrorist attack on U.S. soil I get excited about it. Not about the death mind you, but about the implications of it. It's weird, I really can't explain why I want it to happen, I just do.

I wonder though, the children of the 90's, what will come of all of this in the future? We've grown up only knowing our country being at war - what with Desert Storm at first, and now the one we're currently in; not to mention witnessing a huge attack on our soil. When I first heard that the war was "over" in Iraq I felt like something was missing - like it shouldn't be that way. I wonder if there are others like me who feel similar; weirded out by the prospect of no longer being at war with a country, and expecting, wanting attacks on our own countries soil.
