What's the point in health insurance if I'd be paying more for a deductible than simply paying for shit out of pocket?

Hell, the cost of yearly coverage is worth an ER visit alone. And people pay these sort of premiums "just in case?" They'd be spending leagues more over the years "just in case" than simply paying for the shit outright when shit gets bad.

But it costs substantially MORE in the long-term. You have to remember that medical bills don't incur interest.

Isn't the whole point of insurance supposed to be a failsafe so you don't get a big fat bankruptcy-inducing bill when shit goes south? How come health insurance is the only insurance where you end up paying substantially more than whatever the final bill would be?

My father was hospitalized for a few months because of a heart attack.

    >Hospital bill close to 5 million dollars

Oh America, you so silly. He just moved back to his home country once he was well enough where the healthcare is free and the doctors aren't complete imbeciles.

if you get a serious condition it could cost hundreds of thousand to MILLIONS for you to be treated, yeah not everyone is gonna need that much treatment, yes people will pay more than they receive, but insurance is a business, the way they make money is that they get more than they pay out, if they paid out more than they receive to every single customer then they wouldn't make any money, they'd lose it. people get insurance and pay more than they get because they could get cancer or w/e else that cost shit ton to fix.
    >> Anonymous 02/25/12(Sat)20:43:22 No.1548363
Well the problem is that people don't ask how much things are. For example, if your phone gets broken you'll look around for cheap prices. But if you break your arm you'll just go to the nearest hospital and not ask for the price.

    >How come health insurance is the only insurance where you end up paying substantially more than whatever the final bill would be?

This is the case with every kind of insurance out there. If The average person wasn't paying more than they would have paid for their actual medical bills then there would be no insurance companies. That's how they make their money.

That additional cost is the price of risk. They are taking on the risk that something MIGHT happen to you, and if it does they will cover it. Younger people often have trouble understanding the concept of paying someone to assume your risk as they have not actually experienced those kinds of hardships.

And honestly, no one wants to fully utilize their health insurance, the best luck you can hope for is to always be covered my health insurance and never need it.
