Thoughts on living in big cities?

I've been thinking about moving to a major city.

Any of you guys live(d) in a big city?
    >> Anonymous 02/22/12(Wed)16:59:14 No.1517065
which city? they are all unique.

    >lived in: philadelphia, boston, sf/oakland/bay area, singapore

i like cities. i like being able to get around everywhere on foot or bike or public transport. i like being able to walk to the corner store for a pack of cigarettes or picking up groceries walking home from class or ducking into a bar for a quick drink while i walk.

i fucking hate the night sky though. too little stars. plus the fact that there's no wilderness close by always sucks. but hey, you don't move to a city for the nature.

I want to move to montreal. It's such a nice city compared to nyc
    >> Anonymous 02/22/12(Wed)17:03:42 No.1517109
    I live in Santiago, Chile.

It's pretty cool, subway is (relatively) good and if you live near it you can basically go anywhere in less than 90 minutes.

Only problem is the public transportation buses and people mugging you, especially if you are foreign.

I would highly recommend it if you want more job opportunities and can cope with the abysmal amount of pollution (including noise).

i haven't quite been to montreal, but hey i loves me some NYC. where would you be moving from: suburbia, small town, middle of nowhere, etc.?
    >> Anonymous 02/22/12(Wed)17:06:10 No.1517131
    I live in Las Vegas.

While I don't like it as much as my hometown (Milwaukee), it is actually really nice. Everything is open 24 hours, the Strip is there, and it's cheap to live in - not to mention, it has all the essentials that a big city has.

Also, people mention too little stars. If you live in the suburbs of Las Vegas (10 minutes from the Strip), you can see tons of stars. Not to mention, less than 2 miles from my house, you hit open desert and mountains.

The only drawback is there is no culture out here.

    I live in Honolulu, HI.

Not tremendously big, though lots of tourism. I love the city since there's always something to do, somewhere to eat, etc.

Well worth the extra expense in my opinion.

It must be great living there.

    Maleanon here.

Big cities suck. They're crowded and infested with homless. Suburbs are seperior.

Are cities as a rule more exciting than suburbs or rural places?

Because I live in a pretty rural area and I WOULDNT KNOW.

Was thinking about New York or Chicago. I considered California, but I don't know much about that state.
I'd basically be moving from the suburbs, yeah.

    >>1517172
Would you recommend Honolulu? I'm visiting my uncle there this summer.

I personally think cities like Montreal and NYC are more fun. Though its nice if you like hanging out at the beach. Weather is of course wonderful as well, fuck cold.

Also, not so much in Honolulu, but on the rest of the island all the locals hate white people.

Usually. Some cities are fucking shit though and you're better off in the suburbs.

Austin, Texas has awesome night life and is great.

St. Louis, MO on the other hand is about the same size but there's nobody outside doing anything and you'll get shot if you wear the wrong color.

I lived in Pittsburgh for 4 years. I will move back into a city(hopefully Pittsburgh) when job/money permits.

As I see it you either live in the middle of nowhere so you can enjoy nature, or you live in a city to enjoy the benefits of civilization. The suburbs are take the worst of cities(traffic, pollution, stupid people) and the worst of rural areas(lack of things to do with other people, necessity to own a car) which makes them the worst place to live.

There is more crime in cities, but it is easy to avoid. A healthy dose of racism towards any person of color under 40 will keep you safe.

Jesus Christ, This. St. Louis is the worst fucking city in the world. Some guy tried to pull me into his car when I was walking home from work in the morning. I guess I look like a delicious little girl though, so he probably thought I was underage. I had to stab him to get away. Fucking scariest thing to happen in my life.
    >> Anonymous 02/22/12(Wed)17:59:02 No.1517531
    California

Family lives in downtown LA, I live in the suburbs of the Inland Empire.

I used to really want to live in Los Angeles, everything seems (and it is) exciting there. Nowadays though, I think I like it better living on the outskirts of a major city.

If I want to do something exciting, it's only 20-45 minutes away.

Doesn't hurt that Las Vegas is only a couple of hours away either.

tl;dr I like the suburbs more.

    I live in San Diego.

Can't get any more awesome than here. Perfect weather, great people, beautiful city.

I grew up in suburbs of a small-moderate size town. I've visited much bigger cities (Washington D.C., Pittsburgh, New York City, etc) and while they're nice to visit I don't really know if I'd want to live there. I really like having a delineated space for myself with some nature in it instead of 4 paper walls surrounded by infinite concrete.
