So I've just read up on The Buzzer for the first time. For those of you who don't know, it's a Russian radio station that's been sending out signals since the Cold War, and no one knows what it's for. Then I started reading about numbers stations and now I wonder how many other strange happenings are out there that I haven't read about yet.

What are some good quirks, oddities and mysteries of the 20th/21st centuries, /r9k/? Not shit like "hurr durr how did Building 7 collapse", but things like interesting spy transmissions on public radio, old Soviet ghost towns, etc. (I've got war on the brain at the moment, but feel free to be creative.)

I know this is more of an /x/ thread, but /r9k/ always has such better stories.

The Bloop (unidentified sound coming from the ocean up north somewhere).

Cydonia (alleged pyramid formation on Mars, extremely similar in orientation to Giza).

I have an old radio of my father. Sometimes I capture radio signals from 30 years ago talking about old artists news of that times... is very scary.

Bloop is my favorite by far. There is HARP depending on what you believe they say about it. The men who stare at goats was a real US program to train people to kill with their minds.

I always like reading about spiritualist stuff like the Knights Templar and the Freemasons. I think it'll be a glorious day if secretive religion-based organisations ever give up their secrets simply because they've existed for so long.

Dyatlov Pass was probably some kind of government experiment; the US government did the same kind of thing all the time, infecting people with diseases, playing with their minds, or just nuking islands to see the effects.
    >>11712890
The Bloop and similar are apparently ice-shelf and underwater rock movements, along with volcanicity.
They were wrong about the face, they'll be wrong about the pyramid...

The Buzzer is part of the Dead Hand system that monitors the meteorological conditions in order to detect fall-out, APPARENTLY. It could be plenty of other things, too, but that's one of the more likely guesses I've heard. Numbers stations are, as you said, simply one-time pad encrypted spy instructions. Spies are generally actually idiots, just under deep-cover, so proper encryption and such is beyond them.

    this:
    https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/2009_Sayano-Shushenskaya_hydro_accident
though, is really interesting, because of the small amount of press it got, and the censorship involved. I have been meaning to look into it for a while.

Another group of hikers (about 50 kilometers south of the incident) reported that they saw strange orange spheres in the night sky to the north (likely in the direction of Kholat Syakhl) on the night of the incident. Similar "spheres" were observed in Ivdel and adjacent areas continually during the period of February to March 1959, by various independent witnesses (including the meteorology service and the military).

A few months ago one of the Russian numbers stations went offline for a while and /k/ and /x/ simultaneously erupted into paranoia and speculation of a pending nuclear attack. It was hilarious.

Some details of the tragedy became publicly available in 1990 due to publications and discussions in Sverdlovsk's regional press. One of the first authors was Sverdlovsk journalist Anatoly Guschin. Guschin reported that police officials gave him special permission to study the original files of the inquest and use these materials in his publications. He noticed that a number of pages were excluded from the files, as was a mysterious "envelope" mentioned in the case materials list.

    >Operation Highjump (OpHjp), officially titled The United States Navy Antarctic Developments Program, 1946-47, was a United States Navy operation organized by Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd in Antarctica under the command of Richard Cruzen, which was launched on 26 August 1946 and ended abruptly in late February 1947, six months earlier than planned. The massive Antarctic task force included 4,700 men, 13 ships, and multiple aircraft.

    >Operation Highjump has become a topic among UFO conspiracy theorists, who claim it was a covert US military operation to conquer alleged secret underground Nazi facilities in Antarctica and capture the German Vril flying discs, or Thule mercury-powered spaceship prototypes. This has been the central theme of Robert Doherty's "Area 51" series of novels.

I think in the UK it is illegal to listen to them, as per an official statement (don't quote me on that). He said something along the lines that they;re are not for use by the public.

Kind of related, a podcast I listen to did a show about them. Taverncast #36 towards the end. They always give me chills listening to them. Not creepy, but "special relativity" is a huge mindfuck.

Basically if you were to travel close to the speed of light, lots of shit gets fucked up such as time and distance. Let's say you have a clock on earth and I had a clock on my spaceship and I did almost the speed of light to get to some other planet. According to your clock it might have taken me 10 years to get there. But by my clock, I'd get there in less than 3. Same applies to lengths and velocities, as nothing can travel faster than the speed of light, so everything else has to shrink to compensate (in a manner of speaking).

Most of what he gets is absolute crap, and even he knows it. If he gets something which MIGHT be a voice he keeps it, which has lead to a lot of space on his computer being used up by white noise, essentially.

He showed me a few which are unmistakably voices though, and unless he's bullshitting me there is no way it could be anything else. I'm not saying I believe in ghosts, but I'll swallow my skepticism and give credit where credit is due.

Reasonable sure but my only problem is, is that considering the country they happen to live in, surely somebody knows wtf the aftermath of a freaking Averlanche would look like, yet how they themselves would not come to such a conclusion is beyond me.

Plus it fails to even mantion that they all died in groups under different circumstances.

i admit this one is not conventionally scary or horrible in any sense.

however, there's something so VERY existentially weird about it - as if it's "demanding" to be understood - that it really, seriously creeps me out. consider this a philosophical sort of fright. add that to the amazing age of the fragile artifact and then i REALLY get creeped out.

i truly do not believe that it is a fraud.

I was watching a doco about a solo boat race around the world.

It was in 1950's- very early 60's

Anyway, this man was in the race and gave the wrong speed and distance or something, and it became massive news as a world breaking record or something,

Realised he fucked up and couldn't be where he was supposed to be, and sat on his boat for 7 months by himself off the coast of Brazil, with radio silence

His plan was to wait for the other boats to go past and he would just sneak in at the back and come forth,

which he did, but one boat turned around and went half way around the world again for fun, and the boat coming first sunk, which put him in fucksville, because his books and shit were not in order, and there was going to be 100k people waiting for him to arrive and be disgraced

So he sailed off to somewhere, and wrote some fucking wierd stuff about being a cosmic being and god and shit,

They found his boat a month or two later abandoned and with the wierd writting on board.

    >might be confusing and poorly writ, but I am in a hurry gentlemen

Radio has always fascinated and horrified me. To think that radiowaves propagated many years ago can come back(and they can, and often do)is unnerving. I was listening to the BBC on shortwave many years ago and it got overpowered by a few minutes of The Honey Mooners. Numberstations don't tend to freak me out, since the explanation is fairly obvious. What would be MUCH more interesting is the data transfers(such as the above, very fucking creepy video, that was a dual layer data comm).

I have a few old radios around the house. If you want to pick up oddly propigated radio, it's best to find some old tuners that use tubes. Early unshielded transistor radios work, too, and of course, if the signal is strong enough, you can definitely use a modern HI/LO band shortwave. I have a nice grounded loop antenna on my roof, too.

back during the whole scientology BS, some enterprising german anon set up a number station for awhile. I caught it while tuning some russian ham operators. It showed up on youtube a few days later, made me lol.

Guys, when someone shows you a story like this you should seriously do some Google-Fu. At least half of these have been explained completely.

People don't want to listen. They'd rather the magic and wonder of the myth. Even newspapers, publishers and tv stations will feed you the bullshit while shamelessly avoiding informing their audience about what is actually happening.

Each distinguished by some fascinating feature or tale, these 10 specimens of mankind's new knowledge of the world around us make a fascinating exploration of diversity of the species.

    >Otherwise known as Swima bombiviridis, the green bomber worm gets its name from the elliptical bulbs that it carries near its head. When the worm sheds these organs, which are actually modified gills, they briefly light up with a brilliant green bioluminescence. The green bombs are thought to be a strategy for evading threats.
