couldn't you pick up a trade while in service and try to find something back home with it? I know theres a large demand for welders and mechanics in louisiana and texas.

I'm Air Force and doing mostly paper work. Pay is alright, but nothing to get too excited about. Still it's a secure job and I'll get the same benefits people who actually do military stuff get.
