Why should I feel any kind of sympathy for this girl?

A piece of cloth with a pray written on it harms nobody. If you make it a stand to try and get it removed it looks like you are fucking with people's faith for no reason except to fuck with their faith.

Holy shit, these little bastards need to grow some thicker fucking skin if they want to actually survive in a world where their religious views are not the god damned norm.

The religious reaction is fairly good example of why it's a big deal. Imagine the religious backlash to a banner advocating atheism. Hell, they became quite upset about legally purchased public bus advertisements.

what part of this banner is offense to anyone? unless you are butthurt by the mere mention of God which is fuckign pathetic. who the hell cares about a sign taking up a few feet of wallspace in an entire school, she doesnt have to look at it and she would only have to tolerate it for 4 years.

Real Atheists have no problem with Christians and other faiths putting their symbolism up.
The 1st Amendment protects their right to free speech. This is a violation of the 1st.
Nowhere in the Constitution is the "Separation of Church and State" written, and nothing pisses me off more than people who don't know anything about our founding documents.

As an Atheist, I want to apologize for this shitty behavior, but I don't want to take the heat for a shitball like her.

I'm an atheist, and I understand why she complained. But personally, I wouldn't give a shit about simply seeing something religious. Nobody was forcing her to pray. Nobody was forcing her to do anything.

Seeing a religious banner would mean just as much to me as seeing a sign for a school club I'm not interested in.

But I'm definitely not holding her responsible for all the bullshit she's getting from people in her town. All these loving, non-judging Christians sending her death threats, and trying to get everyone to beat the shit out of her.

I would be alright with the banner as freedom of expression in the school, but not the "school prayer" type thing. Makes it seem to much like it's been endorsed by the school somehow. If students made a banner and wanted to display it in the school without making it appear that it was endorsed by the school, this would be acceptable in my eyes. Naturally, the same would go for atheists, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, etc expressing themselves. The problem with this is that it is much too close to the school ENDORSING Christian prayer. Removing the "Heavenly Father" and replacing the "Amen" with "So let it be." or redacting it entirely might also be acceptable? Clearly, it is important to be sensitive to the need for freedom of expression while avoiding the direct endorsement of religion.

As a poster already alluded to above.

A similar banner spouting Muslim beliefs or Athiest Beliefs or whatever else that would be non-christian would never make it up there and the same "christians" raging about theirs being taken down would rally to have anything contrary to their belief taken down as well.

To all the people wondering why she is so butthurt about a banner... why did it need to be there in the first place? Legally, the school is 100% in the wrong for having it there. Why are THEY butthurt about someone pointing this out? It's unnecessary and illegal for it to be there. Why did it have to go to court, why couldn't they just say "Oh I guess you're right, we'll take it down without making a big deal out of it".

I think that most atheists aren't mad about the fact that banners like this, 10 commandments statues, nativity scenes, etc. are present in public places. I don't see the word "god" and suddenly OH MY SCIENCE, MY EYES BURN ARRRGGH IT'S SO OFFENSIVE. It's the attitude of entitlement that Christians have that their religious beliefs, and ONLY their religious beliefs, should and MUST be expressed in places where it is inappropriate to have them.

I don't think it's the banner she cared about, it's the attitude behind the hanging of that banner and refusal to take it down that she's fighting against.

This is the banner in question. It's barely even a "prayer" so much as a motivational speech.
Only reason anybody would get mad about this is if they have a serious stick up there ass.

Because it was an unnecessary and inappropriate expression of religious beliefs in a public school? "Why not?" isn't an answer, you just don't have a good argument for why it needed to be there in the first place. Students can still pray without there being a banner with a prayer printed on it, they can still have school pride, there was no reason to have it there.

    >>1107304
Well the courts (very predictably) ruled that it should be taken down so I'm pretty sure it was illegal.
    >> Anonymous 01/15/12(Sun)15:47:30 No.1107407
That banner is totally inappropriate for a public school. It gives the impression that the school fully endorses christianity and it gives of a churchy vibe, there shouldn't be a churchy vibe in school. Churchy vibes make non-churchy people uncomfortable.

Like some other people already mentioned, the banner wouldn't be tolerated for a hot second if it had a muslim prayer on it.

and all those kids going after the girl are just making christianity look really bad. they're fucking stupid, why not just start a little christian club (which I'm pretty sure is allowed) and get together and say their little prayer? They would rather get all bitchy about it. Try and pretend they're "opressed" or some shit.

They don't have to water down their beliefs. They can believe whatever they want, government institutions however cannot endorse religion. We have private schools for exactly this sort of thing. I spent many years in a school where we learned evolution was false, Catholics were evil and not really Christians, that we were likely the last generation before the end times, etc. and there wasn't a damn thing anyone could do about it because it wasn't a public school.

I never said they were forcing anything, but its mere presence is government endorsement which the Supreme Court has clearly shown is not allowed. There are plenty of contexts where I'd be totally okay with religious stuff on government property, but it all depends on context. The ten commandments in an Alabama courthouse is pretty blatantly a religious endorsement, but the ten commandments along with other things like Magna Carta and Hammurabi's Code seems less like a religious endorsement and more like a display on the history of law.

America is a country with a great view on religions. Our publicly funded government systems and services can not endorse nor prohibit anybody from practicing whatever religious views they wish. This is great. And because of this, there is an option provided to every American when it comes to education, allowing parents to send their children to a private, religious school if they wish for their children to be educated in and exposed to religious ideas. If you want this for your child, awesome, that's your right and I support it 100%, as does the constitution. What the Constitution doesn't accept, however, is this kind of thing being posted in a public school, where there is not supposed to be any religious ideas period.

She is only being insulted because the banner was christian. If the banner had had a Muslim prayer on it, she would be a national hero for stopping the terrorist agenda to make our kids hate america and our freedoms. Pic related.

You know, honestly, I have to agree with this.

My initial reaction is, "Dude, why is this such a big deal? It's a banner. Grow up and ignore it if it bothers you."

But then, sit and think about the reaction if, like that anon said, it was an atheistic/Islamic/Jewish/Wiccan/Buddhist/etc. banner, rather than a Christian one.

Can you imagine the public outrage that would be generated? There'd be more violent opposition to it than there was to this ruling.
