I enjoyed it, even though it's overrated.
I think the reaction and obsession revolves around it being many people's first VN, which they only played because of the concept and its ties to 4chan.

If you disable the h-scenes do they still happen in the plot?

I am not secure enough with my loneliness to have indirect sex with fictional characters.

A pretty solid VN, but the routes are really inconsistent.

Shizune's route has horrible plotting, terrible use of characters, and spreads itself too thin on focus, we get a mediocre romance story that ends with an ending that begs the question "so what?"

In contrast, Lilly's route is narrowly focused, keeps all of the characters in the loop, has great pacing, and a good romance story with a complete ending.

The other routes all fall in between.

The technical writing ability is varied by author.

    1) Lilly
    2) Emi
    3) Rin
    4) Hanako
    5) Shizune

Overall, I give Katawa Shoujo a shaky 8. The art is poorly done in many of the routes (I think Lilly and Emi were the only ones that got drawing attention). The OST doesn't have any good leitmotifs. The Kenji Comedy gags fall flat late game.

But some of the stories are pretty good and they managed to make 4 of the routes work without a love triangle or drama that did not rise organically from the situation (forced drama).

Ultimately, it doesn't have the depth of something like Cross Channel or MLA, but it's not a bad VN to start with, particularly if you like romances that are not written with the very tired tropes of the genre as it presently is.

Doing the Lilly route on my first run and just hit Act 3.

I'm enjoying the read a lot. I'm hoping this will better me as a person when the need arises to interact with disabled people. Haven't reached too many heart-wrenching moments, but there have been multiple occasions where I "Awwwww"d

Plus, the soundtrack is amazing! And the lack of random Japanese speech you get in other VNs is very nice as I always find those to be rather immersion breaking.
