USAfag here. Didn't read the article, but I was just in Glasgow last weekend as apart of a study abroad program through my university.

I have been to a lot of places around the US and around the world. I honestly have not been in a more depressing place in my entire life. I would kill myself if I had to stay there for more than a week. The only time we had fun was when we drank in the hostel by ourselves (12 of us). They are taking that stop out of the program next year.

I'm in a Times Top 20 University tavelling to America for a year placement doing a Hummanities degree.

I did my fucking research like a normal person would. Jk, it's quite pricey for a student. You will NEED medical insurance. This may be a matter of a couple of grand or less depending on your company's benefit scheme.

Another thing is the matter of transport. America is a big place, things aren't all centralised around the High Street, either. It's all about Main Street, in small towns, and Downtown and Uptown in the city. Luckily, with an English driver's license, you may only need to take a simple test to qualify for driving in America, perhaps not even that. Plus their insurance is nothing compared to ours. A matter of tens of dollars thanks to the whacky way the policies work. Petrol is also a lot cheaper.

Housing is no way near the extorsionate prices Britain set. Plus houses are a lot bigger on average. But again this all depends on where you are going. One thing that is consitent from coast to coast is diversity. Diversity of wealth, diversity of climate, diversity of people. One thing I will say is to watch out for shitty loopholes in rental agreements. That's a life lesson, I know, but in America it's doubley relevant.

Visas. You need one to get there. You need one to go as a student. You'll probably need 5 different pieces of paper telling the authorities you are allowed to work there. It's a whole lot of bearaucracy.

You will need to book an appointment with the US embassy via their website after recieving a confirmation (potentially an I-20) from the work placement that you are going to work there. This is to arrange an interview. Shit may be different for you but I paid 140 pounds for an interview, 200 for a SEVIS fee (student thing saying I can study there) and 14 to get the fucking thing sent back to me.

My sister was at Uni there and by all accounts it is nicer and more affluent than Dundee or Glasgow. It has a lot of bad housing schemes though, like any Scottish city, but the centre is really nice. I hate Scotland and severely want to move out.

I'm from the east end of Glasgow and it really is the pits. I almost feel sick getting the bus through places like Shettleston.
It's just a miserable place. It's how I pictured the prole areas from 1984.

Also people on the West are a bit weird and annoying too, but nowhere near as belligerent or stupid as Easterners, and generally have their hearts in the right place.
