How would you feel about an internet themed /net/ board?

I find a lot of discussions on various boards often come back to the 'Casuals are flooding the internet' conversation, this often brings up some interesting points about the way internet culture has changed, particularly from the start of 4chan to the present day.

Whether we love or hate Leddit, Tumblr etc. the implications and impact of social media and internet culture is an interesting one and I would enjoy discussing this with others.

Things I think about but have no place to discuss:

>The evolution of the 'funny picture' (How the stereotypical 'funny picture' has changed throughout the years.)
>The evolution of content sharing in an internet-culture context and the larger implications of this on the internet (EG: Is the 'reblog' mechanic found on sites such as Soundcloud, twitter and Tumblr diminishing the ability to write descriptively
>How forums and BBS systems have been overtaken in popularity by social media and ideas to make the concept of a discussion forum more attractive to those who prefer the 'content stream' of the sites listed above.
>How internet lingo has changed, internet slang that died out, when certain emoticons were brought into use etc.

I'd like a discussion on tumblr too; userbase stereotypes aside, it's a really interesting platform that falls somewhere between blogging and social media and the culture that has emerged from it.

This stuff interests me, but I have nowhere to discuss it.

maybe an imageboard is not the place for you.

A text board would be fine too.
>>
I think it could be a fascinating board; I love thinking and reading about that shit too. One could learn a lot from such a board, given a large enough community.

just browse encyclopedia dramatica

man that is so fucking meta i don't even know if it's a good idea or a bad one...
>>
>>552763

I think the sad reality is that it would end up as a place for:

>HEY WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THIS NEW MEME?
>I got banned from ____, why are they such faggots?
>Zuckerberg is a Jew and blah blah blah
>/q/ 2.0 with no questions; only whining
>Post your favorite meme
>What happened to Snacks? (I actually wouldn't mind threads like this, but it's probably better suited to /b/)

That's kind of why I'd prefer a textboard more, it would slip under the radar and wouldn't attract all the shit.

It's only theory at the moment anyway, before I made this thread I thought I was the only person who thought about this stuff.

The very existence of various resources that have been documenting *chan culture for years, such as ED, and in the last few years, archives, have contributed a lot to the erosion of the website. This discourages lurking, which is a very bad thing. You weren't able to google a catchphrase and get a site that tells you all about it in seconds. You had to integrate yourself into the culture by spending time here. Weeks, months, years. This ensured the quality of your posts were high, if you ended up staying.

Then again, there's no way to repair the damage anyway. Lurking will never be a thing again. Just know that things like these are the reason 4chan is the way it is today.

I've thought for a long time that there should be a sociology board for discussing similar things but more related to politics sort of... Like sociology of the media mixed with psychology. The Internet is just another media delivery platform so it would fit in with that. I never get any support for that idea when I post it though so I just make those threads on /pol/ usually. I think I like the idea now that I'm thinking about it more. But I also think it's so fucking meta that I don't really understand what i'm thinking about. heh.

You're prob right about the text board thing but I think there would be a lot of quality lost that way too. Sort of a double edged sword...

1) This isn't about *chan culture, but rather internet culture as a whole (*chan culture makes up but a small portion of internet culture, both today and in the past)

2) ED is hilariously inaccurate, the entire website is a troll website, I would sooner believe something said on /b/ than ED and that's saying something.

3) It has nothing to do with lurking. This is not '4CHAN HISTORY PROJECT' this is an indepth look at internet culture and how it has evolved since the inception of the internet.

Stop thinking 4chan == the internet. You talk about 'IN MY DAY PEOPLE HAD TO LURK' but you sound like you're relatively new to 4chan, let alone the internet.
>>
>This discourages lurking, which is a very bad thing.

Great point, anon.

>It has nothing to do with lurking.
Welp. I'm not going to go into why this project is a horrible idea, but I'm just happy that moot hasn't completely gone insane. He would never support this. His recent talk at roflcon made me very relieved, even though I don't agree with many of his decisions on this website over the last few years.

Also, you should check out the three otakon panel videos. That might clear up many things for you. Pay close attention the dynamic of the crowd during each year.

Once again, you're missing the point. It's got nothing to do with 4chan or the direction of 4chan.

This is internet culture. There is and has always been a large expansive internet culture outside of 4chan.

Please re-read the OP.
>>
>This stuff interests me, but I have nowhere to discuss it.
Man, I noped so hard from the first sentence that I didn't even read to the end.

This place exists online. A few places, actually. Not that quick, but they are out there. And that's the way it should be. You won't find it unless you're resourceful. No idiot is going to go looking for it. That's the idea.

>>552740 (OP)
seems kinda related. very metacognative. i imgine a board full of 30somethings twiddling their beards getting baked talking about society and junk
>>552250 →
>>
>>>/prog/

no seriously though, no imageboard needed for that sort of discussion
>>
I would like to have such a board. But it needs to be more about websites other than the popular social networking ones such as blogs, interesting websites, irc culture and shit.

>>552759
>>552771
>ED
Too much satire and drama.
>>
You mean, like /q/ but about the whole Internet? What could go wrong...
