I think the single biggest mistake that people mistake with /pol/, is assuming
that the views of the board's denizens are legitimate. They are not.
Broadly speaking, /pol/ consists of two demographics.
a} Individuals who sincerely and seriously believe in white supremacy and
fascism; and who are generally dominated by rage, fear, hatred, and an
exceptionally distorted definition of masculinity. For most of us, it scarcely
needs to be stated that these people are sufficiently mentally ill, that they do
not deserve to be taken remotely seriously; and you therefore should not allow
them to offend you, either.
The bottom line is that anyone who seriously advocates fascism as a morally
justifiable economic or political theory, is mentally ill. They accept a
worldview which is completely divorced from demonstrable reality. Pity them,
but do not assign them credibility within your own mind. Doing so will only
enrage you, and may place you in danger of being contaminated by their sickness
yourself.
b} The second demographic is a group of trolls, who while not necessarily
fascist themselves, are just as driven by negative emotions as the fascists.
The defining characteristic of this group, is that they seek drama and conflict,
purely and entirely for said conflict's own sake. For them, /pol/ is the
rhetorical equivalent of Counterstrike or other FPS games; fighting each other
or focusing on apocalyptic information ("It's Happening!" threads) are seen by
them as a source of stimulation, which not only allow them to avoid focusing on
the state of their offline lives, but also relieve them of boredom.
While I don't claim to know how to solve the problem of /pol/, I think the first
step has to be acceptance. You must simply come to terms with the fact that,
due to the demographics listed above, /pol/ is not a venue for serious,
constructive, or legitimate conversation. Once you have accepted that reality,
it will become easier for you to seek it elsewhere.
