Moot just got really lucky. He didn't create anything new. He just took something that was already shown to work well and adapted it to English.

Drawquest seems like it'd be fun. Hopefully better than Canvas is.

I think the two biggest problems with canvas are The user unfriendly remixer (Even after multiple updates) and lack of community.
