Every user should read this. And if you're looking for a blast from the past, check out the archived news posts.

/q/ is now open for business, and has already sparked a number of great discussions and changes to the site. Here's one on why 4chan doesn't accept donations and what you can do to support the site.

OK, I think everyone (including moot) knows that we need to shitcan some of the mods and hire more staff overall, but can we take a break from beating on the (poor) moderation in 4chan for a second? I think the point has been made there.

Let's deal with the 2nd most pressing problem on 4chan: The weak-willed permabetas who are intellectually and emotionally incapable of simply hiding or ignoring content they don't like. It's a well known fact that the surest and fastest way to get rid of content that you don't like is to simply hide it or ignore it... but let's face it: 4chan is just chock-a-block with easily-trolled newfags and permanewbs who just. dont. get it. Some of them are actually convinced that their responses are somehow helping! Can you imagine? I can't either. The level of autism it takes to actually believe... ah, I digress.

The good news is this: Fixing the problem is relatively easy. No new code needs to be written, no new rules made, and no new staff needs to be hired. All that needs to happen is for these poor, jellyheaded aspies to be educated. All we have to do is raise their (dim) awareness level about how their assrage posts are actually a worse form of shitposting than whatever it is that they're all in a fluff about. It's two simple rules:

1. Ignore (simply don't post)
2. Hide (no, don't post saying "OMG HIDING U NAO". see: #1)

Now, obviously #1 is the easiest, but if we're dealing with minds so weak and soft that it's impossible, #2 is the fallback. The software is simple and easy to install, even for people too softheaded to realize that spewing their asshurt on the boards is the worst form shitposting possible.

OK, now that we have that cleared up, board quality should improve in no time! Thanks for your help!
>>
I think a Hiding-Option would solve a shitload of problems.

OP got a point.
>>
Can 4chan x just be standard? Copycat websites have already built it in, why not 4chan?
>>
OP here, I think for the really bad offenders of assrage-shitposting, the mods could occasionally use a public enforcement of Global rule #6. This would encourage overall education and awareness that the quality of posts is very important to this community.
>>
OP, why can't you just hide people who can't ignore things they don't like, instead of starting a whole thread about how much you don't like it?
>>
>>76046
I do! But there's a lot of people who are just ignorant of this simple way to make their 4chan experience more fulfilling. I'm just trying to help people enjoy 4chan more, and improve the boards overall. Call it a public service announcement.
>>
>"No fun allowed! He hates fun! When I want shitpost and troll, you have to accept it, or else, you don't like fun!"

There's literally a board for every topic on this website, so stop trying to make it sound like your speech is being limited. All you probably want to do is go on /v/ and talk about how you don't have a girlfriend.
>>
>>76197
who are you talking to?
>>
People need to spam "lurk moar" again. Then maybe people would lurk more.

captcha: strapn xxv.

>>
Some people are weak-minded and can't ignore threads. They could just report them.
>>
>WAAAH GET NARUTO OFF MY BOARD BECAUSE I DON'T WANNA HIDE THREADS
- /a/
>>
i love the 'hide' idea.
But it should be named: 'THIS THREAD IS BS!!!'
Too many times I read bumps like 'stop spamming. this is bad. I report you'
Those people do it, cause they think it helps (although they are bumping the thread)
With the 'THIS THREAD IS BS!!!'-Button they get the impression of improving the quality of the board. In reality it is just a 'hide'-button. It doesn't bump it just ignores and even the haters feel good.
Win-Win Situation!
>>
>>76288
You obviously don't even browse /a/.
>>
>>76278
There are way too many faggots like that. I'm all for hiding threads but it's way too much work and I get discouraged when they keep popping up. The captcha is the problem. They shoud take the captcha off the report page. It would give lazy fucks like myself more incentive to report. Of course now reporting would be watched much more closely because anyone who doesn't like a thread now has more incentive to report it even if it is on topic and a non-troll thread.
>>
>>76342

Actually what if you couldn't post in the thread if you've already reported? It would help faggots not to be stupid and bump. If the troll is serious he will respond even to sages which will bump the thread.

I agree, in fact I just made a thread like this

Overmoderation is only going to make 4chan more like Reddit. I'm not one of those people who act like Reddit is so much worse than/different from 4chan, but 4chan is good for what it is: an anonymous completely free medium of exchanging information and images.

I hate dubs and MLP, but people should be allowed to post whatever they want. I'm not a baby who cries to the mods and reports posts, I have a thick enough skin and enough self-control to ignore posts I don't want to see.

Instead of whining for more fascist moderation, PIC FUCKING RELATED BITCHES.

You don't get it op. People aren't whining about shit they don't like because they don't like it. They're whining because they think it's fun.
>>
>>76428
Not a bad idea but they might (a) not report at all and still go 'lol i reportn u' or (b) just post in it before reporting, which would still contribute to the faggotry
>>
Why can't you hide and ignore the posts of people who can't hide or ignore posts they don't like?

This sounds like a good idea. The only downside is that it just causes circle jerks to get worse.

/a/ doesn't want Naruto on its board because of the terrible fanbase it brings.

Well no one else wants it. It belongs on /a/.
>>
>>76637
Shit doesn't even belong on 4chan. It belongs on Gaia.
>>
>>76637
It never even showed up until some faggot from /v/ said that they should allow it on /a/. Now /a/ is getting hit with naruto troll threads and spam.
>>
>>76637
No it doesn't it belongs far away from 4chan.
>>
>>76500
Do you practice talking like a self-entitled douche in the mirror every morning or does it come naturally to you?
>>
>>76618
To be honest big3 threads are usually civil discussion and a massive amount of anal frustrated faggots. All of the bad in those threads comes from haters, not the fans. Though I do agree that the fanbases outside of /a/ are pretty nauseating. I guess they are afraid of those kind of people come to /a/ and feel at home.
>>
>>76003
Moot has already said if you like 4chan X, then by all means use it, but it will never because a native part of the site.
>>
ITT: I will prove that the mods and moot are my bitches and troll the fuck out of /a/
Maybe if I try high enough I will have right.
>>
See threads you don't like? Hide them.

A thread you like is getting shitposted? Ignore the shitposting, report the offender, make a new thread -- you have lots of options.

Page 1 is all hidden threads and you feel compelled to bitch about it? We're getting into jackass territory here.

The beauty of 4chan is its self-moderation and inconsistency. As much as there are plenty of good conversations to be had, there are also plenty of shitposters.

If you want to spread the awareness of moot's own advice: "post good content, report bad content" then perhaps it wouldn't be a bad idea to make it so the 4chan rules are on the front page.

Asking any more than that is kind of silly, if you ask me.
>>
You sound like a baby who can't handle one bit of hostility. Go back to reddit where you can downvote shit that offends you.
>>
>>76618
No, I'd say that most of /a/ doesn't give a fuck one way or the other.
It's just a small vocal group of asspained people like you who scream like a two-year-old throwing a temper tantrum who want it banned from /a/.
>>
>if I ignore this metastatic brain tumor it'll sure disappear by itself!
>>
Frankly, I think they don't want to ignore it. They get off on saging and "fighting cancer", it makes them feel like an internet hero. They don't care that it's actually doing the opposite of what they want, they don't care about the results, they just enjoy it.

/a/ oldfag here, and I respectfully disagree.

This is the kind of cancer you invite in when you allow Naruto discussion, and the reduction of this kind of cancer is specifically why /a/ prohibits Naruto discussion:

>>>/read/anime/1181156369
>>
>>76975
Well stop saging your brain tumor. Report it to God and move on!
>>

wow, it took a long time before you totally my attention

nice job, op. you almost made a point.
>>
>>77086
But chemo is saging.
>>
>>77100
*lost my attention

seriously though, OP. Literally one paragraph earlier you called them permanoobs. There is no educating this demographic. The boards move way too fast these days to establish that level of consciousness.

You whining /q/ morons are eventually going to have to accept that fact that all boards will have "White noise". A handful of threads, posts, and users who are posting things you don't want, and occasionally intermingling.

d-d-d-d-DEAL WITH IT
>>
OP here.

I'd like to (again) point out that all the anal frustration being displayed here can be easily avoided by using one or both of the two simple rules:

1. Ignore
2. Hide

See how simple that is? How well it works?

>>76712
>self-entitled
Self-entitled? I'm sorry, I think you may not understand what that term means. Would you do me a favor and look it up? That way, you'll be smarter and I'll be able to know what you're talking about. Thanks!
>>
>>77143
Now, here's a guy who gets it. The "white noise" is exactly the way I see the shitposts too! And, like radio static, it's just as easy to ignore. I'm just trying to help some people enjoy their 4chan experience more, which will have the corollary effect of putting a little squelch on that white nose.

However, we disagree on one point: Not ALL boards move as fast as you think! In fact, most of the boards on 4chan are slow enough to benefit from a little more awareness that no, responding IN ANY WAY to the shitposts will never, ever be chemo. In fact, it's cancer.
>>
>>77288
makes a lot more sense now. good luck in your quest.

know that i am a gigantic board ruining shitposter who will probably make you mad
>>
>>77288
I dunno, it seems to me that 4chan has gotten a lot slower now that /q/ has come along. Maybe it's because tons of people are wrapped up here, bitching about stuff or suggesting things, but it's especially noticeable if you use the catalog.
>>
>>77297
I'm a troll too. I like an appreciate a good troll, though. I'm a connoisseur. DU UR WURST!
>>
>>76428
This is an excellent idea.

>>76473
The solution to this is to delete all of a user's posts in a thread when he reports it. Most people would figure out pretty quickly that anyone still posting "reported" was a troll.
>>
>>76428
Maybe I'm understanding the idea, but why would you stop people from posting in a thread just because one person is trying to shit it up? If it's a deliberate troll thread and you reported the OP, then I can understand, but not reporting a few posts in a thread.
>>
No there needs to be more reports, bans and telling people to fuck off with shitty threads.

If you ignore the problem it only grows and turns the board to shit. See /v/.
>>
>>77431
He's just talking about reporting the OP, I think. But I think the idea can be extended: Don't allow posts to link to a post you've reported.
>>
This post isn't gonna educate people much. Really, moot should do an announcement periodically explaining this concept to people, as well as reporting.
>>
>>76243
spamming lurk moar is what we do on /a/. And this is the result (the /qq/ spam).

It's funny because he said that /v/ ignores the problem, GET IT?
>>
>>77502
Compared to /a/ and /jp/, they do.
>>
>>77644
So you're saying that /v/ is only half full of faggots?

You're an optimist! "My board is only HALF full of faggots!" Optimism is good. It's not always smart, but at least you don't get too upset about things.

Nothing worst than idiots fueling trolls.
>>
It takes one person to bump a thread

What we need to do is encourage quality posting to hide these threads, ignoring them and hiding them doesn't take away from the fact that they exist. Soon they'll be filling up your boards and you'd be hiding them daily just to delude yourself into thinking that the posts you didn't hide are the only posts that make up the board

>4chan
>>
>>77720
So... your argument is that people have been responding to shitposts so much on your board that shitposting is all your board consists of, and you're simply too weak-willed to do anything but continue to respond?

Yeah, you're a lost cause. Just kill yourself.
>>
>>77734
Maybe the board you frequent doesn't encourage quality posting, but some do.
>>
>>76712
The people who can't just ignore things here that they don't like and want to regulate it are the self-entitled ones.

Why is this so hard to understand? I don't even like Naruto or My Little Pony, and those people look civil compared to these retards.
>>
>>77747
>Reading comprehension
>Your post
Pick one

Hiding and ignoring doesn't do shit, there's always going to be people bumping these threads. It makes more sense to actually make and encourage quality content rather than close your eyes and hope the shitty content goes away
>>
>>77157
>complains about people who are unable to hide and ignore things they don't like
>does the same damn thing himself

No, OP, you are the idiots. Either practice what you preach, and prove that it works, or shut the hell up.

For the record, this is probably the first time I have been this outright insulting on /q/.
>>
>>77790
Yea no. I've been all over 4chan. Quality posting is just one of those occasional occurrences that happen here. When they do happen, I'm pretty sure the guy behind them is just being ironic.
>>
>>77794
It's as two way street bro. If you're creating quality content, great. But if you're also responding to the shit, then you're cancelling yourself out. Do both, and tell me how much your enjoyment of 4chan improves. It worked for me.

>>77805
Yeah, you need to l2 read threads too. See:
>>76191
>>76481
>>76500
Try harder, brah.
>>
Ignoring a problem doesn't make it go away. It makes the problem more persistant and annoying, and, in a way, it helps it multiply. Trust me, I have tried ignoring people with bad attitudes. While I was paying no attention to them, more people became like them. Don't ever ignore stupid people, and especially don't ignore stupid ideas. Tell them straight then and there why they're full of shit and what they're doing wrong. They just might smarten up. If you don't, they will spread their idiocy and nobody will be reasoned with.

I wish this was common sense, but teachers raised everyone with this delusion that ignoring a problem ever did anything about anything.
>>
>>77893

You're still complaining about people not being able to hide and ignore stuff they don't like, and feel prompted to respond to it. You're doing the same things they're doing. I'm doing the same things too, see?

Again, practice what you preach or shut up.
>>
>>78723

The thing is the people not being able to hide and ignore threads they don't like will go to those threads to complain about it.

It is much easier to ignore threads you don't like than it is to ignore the complaining posts when it clutters a thread you do like, especially when idiots have actually resorted to spamming.
>>
This is something that needs to be dealt with, not ignored.
