I'm reposting this from yesterday's thread in hopes that it reaches moot somehow.

You mean the one with the donations shitstorm and no mention of captchas anywhere except the OP?

No, I didn't miss it.
>>
Alright it seems like he's been out since 2pm or so. You guys should check this out though, the thread from yesterday got a lot of ayes.
>>
>>55503
So you didn't read it. You basically allow spammers to pay to spam this place with virus ridden links, even if for a short while
>>
>>56005
>Global bans for spamming will, in addition to this, make you lose your activation deposit, so you'll have to pay for it again after 120 days. The reason you lose it when spamming is so that those people don't just try to get their money back when they're done shitting up the place. The idea is that it costs more to spam than what spamming actually earns you.
>The idea is that it costs more to spam than what spamming actually earns you.

You don't read much yourself.

Also take a look at this. Oh I wonder why aren't spammers using this service?

And for the record
>apply a ~30 second limit per multi-pass post
You can't really spam with such limitation.
>>
Alright there's a moot in the house! Bump!

Moot has stated MANY times on how he doesn't want donations. I don't think this thread will change his mind.

Well, spammers gonna spam. Now if spamming somehow ends up costing them money, you think they'd do it?

This isn't a donation. The thing I hate about doing ongoing donations is that there is no discrete product/service you're getting. This is different -- you're paying '$X' for 'Y' product/service. This is a product, not a donation. I am totally fine with users paying for something, and getting something of VALUE for it, as in this case.

Looking back, I am also okay with our DONATE OR DIE 2005 campaign because I stated a discrete goal of "If I raise $20k, I will purchase servers, colocate them, and host the site for one year." People donated $14k, and I purchased servers, colocated them, and have hosted the site for over seven years without taking more donations -- I delivered the stated goal and then some. I like Kickstarter projects because you're paying for something concrete, not some ongoing, up-in-the-air goal.

On the other hand, I fucking loathe the Wikipedia model of "Let's ask for money every quarter FOREVER AND EVER!!!!!!" It isn't sustainable for most sites, and I think to take donations without a goal/deliverable other than "the site won't die" is a big mistake.
>>
>>58610

I know it's pretty much the same idea in the sticky, and it is a great idea and that's why I'm expanding on it in hopes that he might consider it.

So, Moot, how about putting a 4chan IPO on the NYSE? Raise some capital and bring 4chan to its highest potential.
>>
>>58650
hi

>>58652
I tried to post the second pic where moot says that it's on the table but he anwsere himself.
>>
>>58650
So you'll do it? Because I really want to give you money.
Not a huge amount
Like a dollar
But it's definitely something
And I know a lot of others would do the same
Hell I disabled adblock for you
>>
>>58650
So what do you say moot? Would you ever give this a shot?
>>
>>58650
So you'd really never take donations at all? What if some lucky anon won the lottery and wanted to donate a heft sum of money to the site? You'd really refuse all that money?
>>
>>58688
If you offered him $100 million to run this site forever, he would probably accept it.

Of course, if he kept it in fucking cash and not actual investment, Bernanke would inflate it all and we would be back to square one.

So, better yet, don't give Moot any money. He isn't a businessman.
>>
>>58688
Yes. I hate them and have refused every cent offered to me since 2005. The only exception might be for some unforeseen discrete goal like the DONATE OR DIE 2005 campaign, but don't count on it.

>>58681
I haven't ruled anything out other than ongoing donations, as described above.
>>
Reposting from another thread:

1. Add (invisible, optional) user accounts
2. If an account is older than 2 weeks and has been actively used, disable captcha for it
3. If the user turns out to be a spammer, he can be banned, and the account is deleted
4. Users who don't like to login don't need to, but they still have to fill out captcha for every post

Simple and reliable.
>>
>>58733
I don't think you realize how many man hours would have to go into writing that and plugging it in.

You know how Warren buffet does charity lunches? You should sell off one on one lunches with moot for funding.

Alright, just be careful though, I've thought of many things and this was the only way I figured that couldn't possibly be abused by spammers. Also what's up with pic related?

>>58764
The stickied thread was almost all about donations, and boy I hope this one doesn't turn into one as well.
>>
>>58791
So we can't have something like a once in a year donation drive for server upgrades/costs?

Oh and we can put troll faces on all the cookies and rage comix on the boxes, and we'll wear anonymous masks and scream lurk moar at passers by

Moot, is 4chan a registered LLC? Do you pay taxes on 4chan?
>>
>>58791
so is this just a general Q&A now?
I visited NYC recently and really liked it and might live there someday. But after dicking around Greenwich Village, I noticed apartments are really expensive. My question is
Are there any affordable places to live in Manhattan?
Are the other Burroughs more reasonable?
Does the price correspond to the number of black people?

moot, I've seen other websites take donations but it is not an ongoing donation setup... they just open donations to cover for that specific month costs, and once the donations reach that specific amount, they are closed... this will probably make you open donations just for a few hours each 1st of each month, and that will be it, donations closed for the rest of the month

I highly doubt Moot even touches /b/ anymore.

That's the same as ongoing, a la Wikipedia. I am opposed to monthly "let's pay the site's operating costs!" drives because there is no end in sight. It's a terrible model.
>>
>>58913
Moot, if some philanthropist said he would pay for 4chan for an eternity as long as content is not censored to meet an agenda, would you accept?
>>
How much would you be willing to pay for this?

Also, the worries about the spammers might be a moot point. Depending on what the price is, they might not be willing to lose their money when they get banned right away for spamming.

Protip: most sites that operate this way fail. The only reason Wikipedia can do it is because of their scale, and the fact that large organizations donate MILLIONS in dollars and donated hardware/bandwidth to keep the site afloat. It is not sustainable for the other 99% of sites.

>>58942
You mean an organization that has basically been on its deathbed for multiple decades?

>>58932
I don't think so. I don't like the idea of being beholden to anyone but myself and the community. "No strings" doesn't exist.
>>
>>58962
It's sad because moot knew this would happen
He inflicted this on himself just to try and help 4chan
>>
>>58972
Moot, please pretty up the text boards. Make them Yotsuba B.
And what wrong with selling 4chan merchandise for money? or selling banner spots at the top of the page?
>>

Well, I admire this attitude Moot. You're a man of true integrity it seems.
>>
>>58979

>>

>>
>>58979
How else is he supposed to talk to his userbase?
>>
>>58982
He has already explained all of this
A: the costs of stock, storing and creating merchandise is too expensive
B: 4chan merch is cringe worthy. do you really want a tshirt that says "4chan lol" showing up on every "nerdy" teen girl in America? There is no way to make merch tasteful
>>
>>59012
By posting anonymously.
>>
>>58972
I've got to say moot, I'm impressed that you've been able to keep your stance on this issue for so long. I'm curious though, if a random guy on the street came up to you and said he wanted to give you $50 as a thank you for making 4chan, would you turn it down?
>>
>>58982
But dis.4chan.org rocks the way it is!

I hate merch for a lot of reasons. The cringeworthy "seeing people wearing meme t-shirts" thing aside, the upfront costs, collecting payments, managing stock or paying someone to do it, order fulfillment, customer support, yadda yadda all make it a huge pain in the ass, and the margins suck. You invest way more in time and energy than you get in return.

>>59008
Oh god I should get myself sponsored like a NASCAR driver and wear stupid jackets everywhere.
>>
>>58972
>Protip: most sites that operate this way fail.
Protip most sites that operate like that don't have large bases

also so what if they don't pay the whole server costs here, you'd be saving some jew gold and be able to comp the missing portion and make a profit
>>
There's something I must be honest about the NoCaptcha idea though. Do you think it would be looked upon as if you're making a profit over an inconvenience that you set yourself?

I wouldn't see it that way, but would you?

>>
>>58913
well... from where I see it, there has been 3 ideas so far:
- Ads
- Paid privileges
- Donations

ads suck and can be blocked, the issue with paid privileges is that they can be abused and it may a pain to start building an evolving system that deals with abusers that know what they are doing, and 3rd, you hate straight up donations

all 3 are terrible models and all 3 have no end in sight too, since that's the whole point of it, to keep the site going for as long as possible... the thing about "wikipedia type donations" is that you let the community do what they really want to do: help the site, and also you don't abuse that since you just let me help for just what is needed

food for thought I guess moot... apologies if I linger but I don't see an issue

Serving the ad impressions helps, but doesn't count towards the "do we keep this ad" tally. I'd ask that you keep them unblocked, but it's up to you.
>>
>>59248
if i have adblock disabled on boards.4chan.org, but 4chan SS doesn't display the ads anyways does it still count?
>>
Moot, if you want a reward for the donations, you should just set a goal for us, say we raise 20,000 dollars, then we get to see you in a frilly dress or something

Just throwing stuff out there
>>
>>59241
If you want to support 4chan, instead of begging moot to give him money like some reverse-panhandler, buy a lot of stuff from the ads.
Their business will kick up, and they will pay moot more (or moot might be able to get more) for the ads.
>>

Amazon links. Boom, rollin' in cash. Scrooge McDuck levels, bro.

Amazon has shit that caters to every board, I guarantee it.
>>
>>59101
That's not sustainable. It's a one time get for a continuing output. A year later and he'd be in the same boat.
What ever he does do needs to be recurring.
>>
>>59248
Question: What about advertisement captchas? I've used ones where you just gotta drag a tab and it has Toshiba or some shit. It also has options where you can type in a products slogan that is in the captcha/ad/picture. Also, why didn't you reply to my email? I was losing it.
>>
>>59259
>then we get to see you in a frilly dress or something
SON YOU DON'T GOTTA PAY FOR THIS

>>59261
We did affiliate programs back in the day and it generated basically zero dollars. Also we aren't allowed by Amazon's ToS (and most other sites) due to adult/offensive content. CPA ads suck.

>>59267

>>
Let me get this straight, moot; if I click on the ad on 4chan to buy kawaii things off J-List, does his count as a referral from 4chan for their tally?
>>
moot, I just got this idea, figure I'll put it out there in case you read it, tell me what u think:

a paid extension, like a paid 4chan-x, that gives the user a whole different 4chan experience, that they can customize to their will... I know that there are already tons of 4chan extensions that can do that... but you can add some features that are not easily done by extensions... I am not sure what the options can be, but it is just an idea
>>
>>59248

I think if J List wants to make some money off 4chan users they should change up their banner ads a little

they have some bomb ass jap candy that they don't fully advertise and cant be bought in US stores
>>
>>59248

I'm curious about it but it seems like a facebook thing
>>

How about donations towards new boards? You throw up a thread asking for board ideas, the ones people like the most get donation drives, whichever ones reach whatever goal you want get made, the others get refunded.

I think I was mentally blocked on adding something like this for a long time, until I wrote the news post. Shit took me four years to write.

I've always enjoyed interacting with the community and have really missed it, since I can't post on other boards without unleashing a shitstorm (which can be fun, but not the same as blending in). >>
>>59704
Interesting. I find that 4chan influenced a lot of who I was when I was an adolescent and still continues to broaden my horizons and influence my views on life.
/b/ instilled me with a dark sense of humor, while when I started browsing /g/ I was exposed to GNU/Free Software, started caring about personal freedoms and started reading a lot of Cory Doctrow's essays and being involved with the EFF and other groups. /tg/ got me back into being a magic player, and eventually a magic judge. Thanks to them I now have a large circle of close friends and travel the world judging my favorite game. Maybe I'm reading too much into how I've been influenced by 4chan, but I definitely feel like it has had a major impact on my life.
As far as the captcha issue, I've grown so accustomed to it that I don't ever really notice that I'm filling it out and I've become so good at it when ever my friends at work can't figure one out on some other site I do it in a few seconds for them. I honestly have no reason to want to see the captchas removed. They've done a good job at keeping spam away and aren't a deterrent to well thought out posts.

4chan is a place to grow up. That's a big justification for not allowing underage
It's not that underage doesn't post, but the rule forces people to try and be more mature
Most people find 4chan in their teen years
If you stay here for awhile you're going to grow up

He has confirmed that he uses 4chan daily and mostly posts anonymously (at least before opening /q/, I imagine he's pretty busy here right now). This board and these threads are here so that we can talk to moot directly AND GET ANSWERS instead of bitching about it on a random board and hoping something gets done.

PS: It's awkward as hell writing/reading stuff like "moot thinks this" but when these same questions get posted in every thread you kinda know for sure... I wonder how moot feels about people doing this. Must be pretty creepy.
>>
>>59783
I was just thinking about this, but have it divided by board.

I keep seeing threads or questions (especially /a/ related) that are repeated ad infinitum, and I keep having to go "the mods already said that blah blah blah". It would be useful to have something that said

>X thread allowed
>X threads disallowed
>X tripfag is a faget
>etc.

I have no idea how one would format such a thing so that might be a bad idea
>>
K, so after reading the sticky and this thread, here is a summary of the situation:

1. 4chan needs to break even. It isn't.
2. No donations.
3. Porn ads suck.
4. Ads need to sell products or else the advertiser just stops buying ad space.
5. Paying a certain amount to have perks which don't impact the other users sounds cool.
6. Merch also sucks.

So, if we want 4chan to at least break even, we need it to generate money in some form. Advertisements help achieve that goal, but having a product would also help. Now, what does 4chan produce which we could put a price tag on without messing with the "4chan experience" which wouldn't make people cringe?
>>
>>59816

i got a question

why are you using a reaction face from that shitty goon cyboyardee's ironically bad youtube thing

is it because you want to tip off moot that goons are in here trying to butter him up and sway the site in a direction they like
>>
>>59764
Hey moot, what draws the line between avatarfagging and reaction images? For example, a ponyfag uses a pony image for a reaction image and everyone gets all internethurt and reports, but at the same time people will raid with spiderman. I personally have become indifferent to the matter. I find ponyfags just as annoying as weaboos or spiderman spammers or furries or....

Only problem's I'm on the other coast, but it's only a week's drive if/when you get the land and money. But you'd probably be better just asking for help on /diy/ than relying on one person anyway, so I'll remain anonymous for now.
>>
>>59838
>4. Ads need to sell products or else the advertiser just stops buying ad space.
This part isn't right. It's just one of many metrics advertisers use to determine whether or not they should continue to run ads. Every advertiser is different. Some look for impressions, clicks, actions, sales, etc. It's all different.

But the rest are spot on.

It's hard to draw a bright line policy around this. Let me think on it.

I would like to know this as well. Sometimes I'm in a thread I use a reaction picture of a character. Then someone responds to me, and I use another reaction image of the same character in my reply, to kind of let them know that it's the same person they're talking to.

Does anyone know what I mean? It's not avatar fagging, because I don't do it with every post or anything

Imageboards don't really offer much as a product.

People come here for discussion and laughter, etc. There's not much you can really market for that.

I would like to suggest looking into partnering with the various video game streaming sites that spam their streams here.

I'm not sure how, though.

Maybe $5 a month per account and you can start a topic in a /streams/ board advertising your site. Users could be free to reply without an account to discuss the stream.

Or charge money for a place in a sticky linking to various streaming sites.

Or just standard ads for those sites.
>>
>>59856

All right. Right now, I'm trying to think of things 4chan "produces". The thing it does generate in tremendous quantity is content and "internet culture". I mean lolcats, memegenerator, ragefaces, as unbearable as they have become, work. If you could find a way to profit from the content of 4chan without whoring it out in such a way, that would work. How to do that though has me kind of stumped. And I think putting a "copyright" on the bullshit that appears on /b/, though hilarious in a special way, would pretty much kill the board. Most of all, I don't think I need to mention that even though 4chan is no secret to anyone nowadays, no one really wants it to become some mainstream, commercialized thing.

Ow, my head.

But it's easy as hell to write a code for shit like this. Then you'd just have to have one or two guys filtering the illegal content. Or doesn't moot have any volunteer coders anymore?

Holy shit.

This one time I got a message that I was banned from /d/ for posting off topic material.

I don't even go to /d/...
>>
>>60028
It's more work than you would think in that if we're doing dynamic or weighted rotations, what ad should be displayed must be computed dynamically. We serve a lot of ad impressions and every piece of software we've used in the past has caved under the load. The only real solutions for us are hosted ad servers, but they cost an arm and a leg. I think I might have a solution soon though.

Oh shit, now I have to know. If I guess the right amount, can we get some flip-flop on head?

14. I bet I've got 14 bans. I really need to stop drinking.
>>

So whats to stop these Spammers from buying a cheap pass and spamming again.

How about getting a YT account, getting a partnership, making a video of you playing with a cat, then embedding it on the "Post Successful" screen with autoplay.

HOLY SHIT not this but moot, what if you created a 4chan youtube account? Post random shit that's not copy-righted and 4chan would flood it with views and ad-clicks! All it checks for is leading/trailing whitespace in the direction of the real word. For example, my CAPTCHA is "naliem 120," so I'd only need to type "naliem " (note the space after it) to get through. But I'm probably the only one here who's anal enough to actually type out the whole thing correctly despite knowing I don't have to.

In all serious though, moot could probably make a bunch of money off of an official youtube channel. Even without autoplaying cheats there is potentially thousands upon thousands of subscribers already ready. He could even set up a /vi/deo board where people share their own videos and then reap money off of some sort of /vi/ community channel where he uploads the best original videos from the board. There's probably a dozen other ways he could make cash via youtube but I don't think any of them would keep his (or 4chan's) integrity/dignity intact. And that's the big issue.

>>
>>60026

No, you used this thread, and other threads on /q/ as a vehicle for admiration and worship. You have encouraged people to shitpost on /q/ already by day 2.

For someone who hesitates on placing special privileges and the like to keep the site alive, you sure act in the opposite manner. Any smart man worth his money in your position would monetize 4chan, moderate it thoroughly, and live comfortably for the rest of their lives. Whatever notions of grandeur that you think you will possess from letting 4chan die a natural death will fall on deaf ears. No one will remember you. You are wasting your life trying to appease the most horrible rejects of society into spending their welfare dollars on the junk the site advertises. This place could of become so much more, and all I see is wasted potential.

There will be a point in your life in the not too distant future where you will become jaded and sick of this website. It has become a husk of its former self.
