I like Kickstarter projects because you're paying for something concrete, not some ongoing, up-in-the-air goal.

On the other hand, I fucking loathe the Wikipedia model of "Let's ask for money every quarter FOREVER AND EVER!!!!!!" It isn't sustainable for most sites, and I think to take donations without a goal/deliverable other than "the site won't die" is a big mistake.

ads suck and can be blocked, the issue with paid privileges is that they can be abused and it may a pain to start building an evolving system that deals with abusers that know what they are doing, and 3rd, you hate straight up donations

I think I was mentally blocked on adding something like this for a long time, until I wrote the news post. Shit took me four years to write.

I wanted to do this a long time ago though. I've always enjoyed interacting with the community and have really missed it, since I can't post on other boards without unleashing a shitstorm (which can be fun, but not the same as blending in). I miss the good ol' days where I could chill out with people in threads.
