I was thinking I would apply for Janitor when the application is open again. The thing is, I don't know what board I should apply for at all, since I only browse /a/ myself. From daily use I don't think it needs Janitors that badly and I'd rather help on a board that actually needs one...

Or, should I apply at all to boards I don't already frequent? I have years of experience as a global moderator on foreign chans, so browsing boards that normally don't interest me is nothing new for me. But I can see the lack of knowledge about the boards own culture being a big problem at times.

tl;dr: Which boards need Janitors the most, and should someone apply for the position if they don't browse them already?
>>
>From daily use I don't think it needs Janitors that badly

What the fuck? How often do you browse /a/? Yes, it does need more janitors. Badly.
>>
>>5079
Daily, for several hours... and yes, I agree it needs Janitors too, but I hear some other boards are much worse off. Besides, I'm sure /a/ will be one of the boards with most applicants when the application does open.
>>
>>5147
90% of which will only be doing it because they think they should be allowed to delete threads about anime they don't like.
>>
>>5147

Wouldn't you be best applying for boards you actually use though? You'll have a better understanding of what is and isn't allowed, as well as the problems plaguing the boards you visit. You won't know those details about some random board you've never been on before.
>>
>>5079
I'd say it doesn't. I used to hang on /a/ daily around five to two years ago, and sure, it's become a shithole. But not because it's full of unrelated content. It's just attracted another crowd, the Lucky Star K-On Strike Witches Toradora moeshit crowd. But that can't be fixed with a janitor.
>>
/a/ needs janitors, but the board most badly in need is /x/. The place is just a haven for roving /b/tards, and every thread just devolves into gets, illuminatispam, IT'S HAPPENING and "lul disinfo". Seriously, do something to help /x/.
>>
>>5209

>moeshit

>>
MOOT please get a good janitor for /jp/, we've been sending you emails all the time and something needs to be done.
>>
>>5209
It needs to have all the reddit and meta shit moderated hard.
>>
/v/ needs janitors or even better mods. Like really badly.
>>
>>5235

/jp/ needs mod, not janitors.
>>
>>5209
Sure /a/ is a shit hole with the same repetitive threads, but from time to time, you get some very intelligent threads like this http://archive.foolz.us/a/thread/69227249/#69233397

Fate/ usually are flooded with powerlevels, waifu wars and fujoshit but at times some decent threads come out. I kinda wish all >why is s/he so perfect
but i guess its unfair to waifufags. But i agree with more janitora
>>
>>5227
I was using it because everyone knows which crowd it refers to. If /a/ has a "problem" it's because most the users are into that particular genre. I'm saying it's not a problem because it's still completely related to anime, thus janitors won't help unless they start deleting almost everything.
>>
>>5033

In a similar boat myself. I intend to apply as well in spite of the fact that /b/ is by far the board I know the most about. To be honest, I don't think it'll be that big of an issue considering that janitors (unlike mods, and above) are to enforce the rules as written. In that instance being familiar with the board is not as pressing of an issue as, say, knowing 4chan as a whole.

Of course, that's not to say you should apply for a board just because you think you'll have a greater chance of getting it. You should go with the ones that best resonate with your interests. Keep in mind that to do an outstanding job as a janitor it helps to spend a lot of time on your assigned boards, having fun while you're there is the best way to achieve that end.

Good luck on your application, by the way.
>>
>>5293
I meant
'i kinda wish to delete all >why is s/he so perfect threads.
>>
>if they don't browse them already?

Dunno, I think it should be important for the mods and jans to be familiar with the board's culture or you're just looking at a major shitstorm brewing. Can you imagine if there was a jan who actually believed /sp/ was about sports?

You might be onto something. I'm might say I'm familiar enough with what /x/ is through late night creepy threads, and the chan I currently moderate has an /x/ board, albeit little slow...
>>
>>5033

If you are looking for a place to lay your roots, /tg/ could probably use some dedicated ones.

Especially now that we've suddenly caught the [spoiler] bug, that'll get... abused.
>>
>>5352
No it won't. Even now people barely give a fuck about it. /tg/ may have gone downhill but it's still mature enough not to create thread culture around such a thing. Especially since most fa/tg/uys venture to other boards anyway, so it's not new. Just new for the board. If there'll be a problem, it's /v/tards, and they'll grow bored in a matter of days.
>>
>>5209
>moeshit
Opinion invalidated.
>>
>>5352
The last thing /tg/ needs is dedicated janitors. What /tg/ needs is a live-and-let-live janitor who only steps in reluctantly when things are taken too far.
>>
>>5235
But who wants to go in there?
>>
>>5434
Those thing are not mutually exclusive, you know.
>>
Seeing as this is related, I meet all the qualifications except for computer savvy. Could I get janitor?
>>
>>5457

You need to be expert at sucking moot's cock too.
>>
>>5477
Done.
>>
>>5457
I can't speak on behalf of the staff team, but I think knowing how to irc and having basic understanding of chan terminology (the buttons/panels you'd see as an admin/mod/jan) is tech savvy enough...
>>
>>5493
I think that's about it. You should know how to join #4chan
I swear the "chrome extension" was just "extensions" before, but I guess it's still fine if you use other extensions
>>
>>5448
I wouldn't even admit they aren't in THEORY, much less in practice. Dedicated people are rarely laid back in their approach. Not if their power has to do with deciding what's wrong and what's right.
>>
>>5457

Only one way to find out.

>>5493

The janitors use special Chrome extensions as well if my memory isn't off. Hence that part in addition.
>>
>>5509
>>5493
Yeah I can handle that. I would be autistic as fuck and spend HOURS a day deleting unrelated things so I think I'm perfect for the job.
>>
I think the best candidates for staff positions are people who spend most of their time here.
>>
>>5514
If they really are dedicated then they should know what's 'wrong' and what's 'right.
>>
>>5535

Just about sums it all up nicely.
>>
>>5457
What are the 'qualifications' to become janitor? Length of time spent here? Length of application? Minimum age?

And I hate to bring age into this because obviously, you need to be over the age of 18, but I've been here for a long time and I'm only 19. I feel like that was ultimately what led to my rejection, admitting that I was essentially underage when I first started posting, even though I lurked for a long time beforehand and haven't and try to never shit-post.
>>
>>5535
IE not the normalfaggot mods moot hired so he could look hip

We need hardcore oldfags that know what belongs and what doesn't and who can recognise trolling easily.
>>
>>5583

Least said, easiest mended. I doubt that's why you were rejected, but if there's no point in mentioning it, than why do it?

>>5619

That may be applicable for potential moderators, but:

>Janitors ARE NOT...

>Interpreters: Rules are to be enforced as written. Janitors enforce site policy only and personal motives should never influence deletion. They are objective, not subjective.

My contention is that what matters most is the ability to follow the rules, as well as your instructions as given. Then if you're still around long enough to be considered for a promotion to mod, then you most likely would fit the qualifications you mentioned by that time.
>>
>>5746
In the last application wave, you had to put down your age. Otherwise I would have just left it off.
>>
>>5772

I see. Guess you can't rule out that possibility then.
>>
>Can't even spell should
>>
>>5348
Hey, 4 year user of /sp/ here. Fuck "/sp/ culture". I really hope our new janitor straightens out the shitposters and gets rid of all the fucking ridiculous offtopic bullshit on /sp/
>>
>>5209
Well said
>>
Personally, I think that one should've browsed a board for some time to see what problems are running rampant, and general culture as well as default reaction to certain types of posts, so that one can focus on the problems that run rampant and to have a basic idea about how best to moderate a community. For example, one that has browsed /v/ knows that there's a lot of 'ironic' shitposting and that there's a lot of conflict over the 'culture' issue, and that on /pol/, almost any thread related to race issues is spammed with interracial porn. Native problems are probably there in every board. That's the kind of knowledge you kind of 'need' to work efficiently, organized, and with a clear goal, and I think that one can only acquire such knowledge by frequenting a board for some time.

Then again, I'm just some fellow on the Internet who really has no idea on how to fix the problems of this site either, but aren't we all?
>>
>>5954
Any way, I wouldn't stress about it. Fill in an application, and if they deem you adequate, you're in. Assuming you have been a mod on other chans, you probably are, so it can't harm, I hope.
>>
>Versed: Knowledgeable about the content posted to their respective board. Active members of the community.

Do not apply to boards that you don't browse and post in regularly.
>>
>>6085
Oh, right. Forgot about that clause.

>that feel
>don't know how to IRC

>never have my application approved

Good fucking riddance, I'd say.

People like you are cancer.
>>
>>6152
But IRC is easy. Just get mIRC, look up a few things on Google, try connecting to a few channels, and you're there.
>>
>>6152
1. Download an irc client. I prefer xchat-wdk (i think it got renamed recently but i havent updated, just google it)

2. Install and launch it

3. To connect to the irc server type "/server irc.rizon.net" without quotes

4. To change your name to something else type "/nick [new name]" without quotes or backets

5. To join a channel find one you would like to join such as #4chan and type "/join [#channelname]" without quotes or brackets

6. Talk to people, also look up tutorials on typical irc commands like /query and ctrl+k for colors
>>
>>6085
>>6125
In that case I'll just apply for /a/. I don't know how I missed that part.. probably shouldn't do all nighters so often.

You want people like this to be janitor?

God, don't tell him.

>>
>>6235
I don't think someone knowing how to use IRC really determines if they'd be an effective janitor or not.

I didn't know how to use irc until someone gave me a tutorial like 7 years ago.
