The next 4chan Q&A/PMQ session will be held on Sunday, November 18th at 8:00PM EST.

I'm also taking questions/comments/feedback/random musings via e-mail at moot@4chan.org and on AIM at MOOTCHAT. Feel free to drop me a line or say hi!

New inline extension features: Color user IDs, download by original filename, and settings export/restore. Click [Settings] in the upper-right to check 'em out.

UPDATE: The "Auto" checkbox for the auto-updater is now sticky, so if you refresh the page or come back to a thread, it will stay checked (so long as you don't close your browser—it'll reset in that case).

I'm not here to dispute the ban or complain about it, I just want to point out the inconsistent moderation that I encounter all the time here on 4chan.

This is the only time I've ever received any sort of feedback or indication that someone is actually looking at the posts being reported, and here I am getting banned because a moderator disagrees with the report, even though it was perfectly valid.

A one-word post reply that says simply "lulz" is a shitpost, especially on a board like /sci/ which has more room for real discussion and posts with content.
It's also worth mentioning that I reported three posts at once, only one of which said "lulz" and the other two were off-topic shit and a macro image reply. Are some mods not familiar with the global rules or do they just do whatever they want because there's no way to hold them accountable?

>Do not post the following outside of /b/: ... uncalled for catchphrases, macro image replies, indecipherable text (example: "lol u tk him 2da bar|?"
>The quality of posts is extremely important to this community. Contributors are encouraged to provide high-quality images and informative comments.

I guess I'm kind of glad that someone is actually looking at the posts reported, just disappointed that they don't actually enforce the helpful rules and instead choose to ban people who are trying to improve a board's content.

Boohoo the autistic highschooler can't ignore shit he doesn't like. Go cry on >>>/b/.
>>
You seriously reported that? Wow.
>>
I report stuff like that all the time, never been banned for it. Not on /sci/ however. Guess they got their own little special rules that supersede the global ones.
>>
couple years ago I was posting furry porn on /v/, ban message says "Take this shit to /h/" Went on over to /h/ and started posting furry porn and got banned again for furry porn on /h/.
Appealed the ban saying that I was doing what a mod told me to do and got it approved.

tldr: mods barely know the rules themselves.
>>
>indication that someone is actually looking at the posts being reported,
It's a 4chan rule that janitors are not allowed to reveal themselves. They can delete posts but they'll never pat you on the back for reporting them. Moderators have the power to ban, and they must provide a reason for the ban.

>A one-word post reply that says simply "lulz" is a shitpost,
Opinions on the shape of the earth differ... But for the sake of argument let's say it fulfilled the criteria for shitposting. Do you have any idea how many trivial offenses are committed on 4chan? You seriously expect they have time to delete them all? If you were a janitor or mod you'd burn out in no time at all from being overworked. In short, you really were wasting the moderator's time.

Not only are 4chan's mod resources limited, but policy has always been kinda relaxed about the rules. The sooner you realize this, the less heartburn you'll give yourself.

wow look at all these shitposters trying to suck some mod cock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you did the right thing OP. the moderation team are garbage. first they tell us "ignore anything you dont like, just _report_ hide and move on". THEN when you do report "omg u waste my time i had to pause my chinese cartoons to clear the report queue because moot said he's going to fire me for doing nothing qq ;___:;"

fucking pathetic
>>
Is that the same " I HAVE CP TO BAN, STOP WASTING MY TIME " mod?

Are you 'anti-intellectualism, 10h a day' guy, one of the 20 regulars on /sci/?
>>
I'm glad OP was b&. The shit-for-brains autistics really fuck up what should be 4chan /sci/ culture.

>rules say you should post quality content
>post shitty one liners instead
>some faggot reports you
>he gets banned instead

>It's also worth mentioning that I reported three posts at once

If you are retarded enough to believe that you can report more than one post at once, you deserve to banned, for you are surely detrimental to the intellectual quality of the board. You cannot report more than one post at once. Checking the checkboxes next to multiple posts and hitting the report button only results in reporting the first post you checked. If you had at least average intelligence and weren't technologically impaired, you would have figured this out before embarrassing yourself on /q/.

>implying /b/ tier shitposting is /sci/ culture

I bet you're an underaged homework spammer. /sci/ is for intellectual discussion, not for immature and infantile nonsense comments.

lulz. "Report, hide, don't reply" is short for "report explicitly rule-breaking content, hide/ignore it, and don't reply; not to sage, announce your report, or encourage others to do so," to wit. "lulz" is not breaking any rules. It's pretty much just white noise in response to another post, but so are reaction images, albeit the latter wastes exponentially more bandwidth.

you forgot your mod trip, bro. it's ok we know you faggots are no different from the mods at gamefaqs, somethingawful, etc power made or jaded from years of volunteering
>>
>>285250
"lulz" is an uncalled for catchphrase and a low quality comment. As OP pointed out, it violates rules 3 and 6. Not to mention that it is an expression of anti-intellectualism and thus not welcome on /sci/.

>>285261
>it's ok we know you faggots are no different from the mods at gamefaqs, somethingawful, etc power made or jaded from years of volunteering
why would you expect something different?
>>
>>285261
4chan mods are no different from power-tripping forum moderators because... they're NOT neurotic and overly-literal, and don't want users reporting every little post that isn't up to their intellectual standards? 4chan gets like a million posts per day and it takes long enough for our reports of trap porn on /v/ and such to be addressed without people filling the queue up with nonsense. When I see a post containing nothing but a quote and lel/lulz, my first instinct isn't to report, it's to keep scrolling and save my reports for something more important lest I hit the new daily cap probably put in place BECAUSE of people making frivolous reports. I want mods, not babysitters.

A ban for it seems excessive, but for all we know it was a 1-minute warning to get OP to stop.
