Hey. I just had a question about /lit/ and I was wondering if someone with authority could answer it.

Is /lit/ the appropriate board for philosophy? Is philosophy discussion allowable on and within the rules on /lit/? It's always taken place on there, and it's usually a pretty good fit. But there are a few people who have issues with it, and it would help a lot if you could just clarify whether /lit/ is an appropriate board for philosophy discussion.

Thanks in advance!

Is philosophy literature?
No
Is there literature on philosophy?
Yes.

Discuss stuff like Descartes, not your personal view.

But - to use a case that's not philosophy - it's perfectly kosher to talk about books in general, the content of books, what a book should be, what makes books good and bad, without talking about a specific book.

Isn't that analogous to talking about philosophy in general terms? If people are evaluating philosophic arguments, why does it matter whether those arguments are closely tied to a specific text?

Also, are you a mod or just a user? I don't mean to be rude, I just don't understand how /q/ works, and I'd prefer if someone with some kind of official authority had an opinion. If not that's cool too! I'd just like some kind of authoritative decision so there's no more argument.

>Isn't that analogous to talking about philosophy in general terms?
Yes. Even if you are using philosophical arguments that are not derived from any particular text so long as you are using them to analyze a particular text.

Because it's /lit/ not /phi/
Books are directly related to literature, and "a book" is often interchangeable with "a piece of literature"
When you discuss what makes a book good, you're talking about the content, not the physical object. You're talking about the literature.

Your personal philosophy has nothing to do with literature, so has no place in /lit/

I'm not a mod or anything, just someone who can use their brain.
