Okay, so anyone who has been on /v/ withing the last couple of weeks has seen one of these threads about the latest sandbox shooter Sleeping Dogs. There have been all kinds of threads about it. Many of these threads have absolutely no point to them and are made by only two kinds of people: trolls and viral marketers. Now, I hate the game and have since around the first time I saw it so I'm a little biased against its popularity but the frequency of the threads is way too high for anyone's comfort. It's fucking ridiculous that such a shit game to have so many followers and it's also highly unlikely for such an "elite" group of people with such "refined" taste to like such a thing (at least seriously). Let's put the bias for it aside for a second. There are way too many threads. Move it to /vg/ so it doesn't clog up the board with shitposting and

>DAT FEEL WEN NO CRAK
>>
Haven't you ever considered the idea the game was actually g-good? Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, and the fact you don't like the game doesn't preclude anyone else from making a thread about it. Just hide and ignore.

And, not to get off-topic, but a crack has already been released.
>>
It's been cracked. Move along now.

>Haven't you ever considered the idea the game was actually g-good?

I wanted to like the game. I practically pissed myself when I heard TrueCrime was getting a sequel (that's what it was speculated to be at the time)

>Everyone is entitled to their own opinions

yes, THEY are. I'm tired of even hearing about it I would be totally fine with people liking a game that I think is bad so long as it's not in my face all the time. I would just hide but there is no script (that I know of) that hides an image like the one in the OP by recognization. I don't think filtering by FLAK and md5 works because that avatar-fag still shows up.
>>
>people are openly talking about a pretty good game that was released less than a week ago
VIRAL VIRAL VIRAL VIRAL VIRAL

Seriously bro. No company in their right mind gives a fuck about 4chan, and even if they did, what the fuck are you going to do about it? Find the IP of their company and range ban them so none of their employees can post?

Better yet, what fucking difference does it make if someone keeps telling you a game is good? Is this forcing you to buy and play them game, forsaking all other games? No? Really? You make it seem like it's a much bigger deal.

Perhaps you're just bitching for no reason and you are only using an age old excuse that was originally a joke, now turned honest accusation.. Curious.. Very curious.

Actual marketing or not it is still shitposting. Like I said if you find the game good well more power to ya. I'm happy that you can find joy where I can't but even then the threads are up 24-7 and they're getting really annoying. they clog the front page with 2-3 threads sometimes. Why can't they just take it to /vg/?
>>
>>117919
>No company in their right mind gives a fuck about 4chan

This is what you think.
>>
>>117944
Use the catalog, use the plug-ins, hide threads, get on with your life.

There's no rule against the number of threads, though there is one for the quality of posts. If you really think it's shitposting, then just report it. However, keep in mind that no amount of moderation will curtail shitposting when so many boards happen to think that being awful is a board culture that deserves protecting.
>>
>>117984
well, okay
>>
>>117979
And that thinking isn't entirely wrong.
>>
>>117979
On 4chan of all sites, why would anyone advertise?
>>
Would you people shut the fuck up about marketing? Every new game gets threads made about it, deal with it and shut the fuck up.

>>119771
Also, people like you need to shut up. 4chan is a huge site, it's not your secret clubhouse. While I think OP is a complete retard, you are also a retard for thinking that it would never happen.
>>
oh shut the fuck up. A new game comes out that has a bit of hype and potential to be good will get a lot of posts when its released. just report the shit posts and move along . There is no need to move it to another board when no one will e talking about it in two weeks.

4chan has something like 20 million unique visitors a month. That's not even including people with adblock or noscript (probably the majority of users use these)
https://content.4chan.org/tmp/extensions.html

/v/ takes up around ~20% of the boards traffic.

So what, that's ~4 million users that visit /v/ in a month (again, not even including people with noscript/adblock)?

That's a very large number of people that advertising could influence - especially in the gaming world.

Have you ever bought any games because of /v/?
I know I've bought a couple.

Also, not only could these companies viral their own products, they could try to manipulate opinion against their competition. (See: TOR threads, D3 threads, 'Steam only lets you rent games')

If I was a marketing executive - I'd do this shit. It probably doesn't cost much, especially if it's outsourced to India.

Most of the /v/iral bullshit is people trolling, though.
That doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

The grand majority of "viral marketing" are just people pretending to be marketers/people reposting the same thread to stir shit in /v/.

Chances are they are the same people who spout off "viral marketing" in the same threads as well.

What needs to happen is 1)You guys really need to stop fucking spouting off "viral marketing" as some knee jerk reaction. People may actually want to talk about the game and you will look like the bad guy doing that shit.

2)If there is indeed a pattern going on, start using http://archive.foolz.us/v/ and point out the threads on /q/.

And 3) Don't be a sperglord about it. Please.
>>
If that enough people cared to spam 4chan the same people would be knocking down moot's door with bountiful jewgold for advertisements and 4chan would never lose money again. But there's a reason that doesn't happen.
>>
>>120238
It's possible the posters crying viral are the marketers themselves. It would be an incredibly easy way to discredit any recommendations of a competitor's game. I believe Andromeda mentioned this as an easy way to derail threads that weren't going his way.

You're right the majority is just trolling - but that's the point of viral marketing. At some point trolling becomes indistinguishable from the real thing. Trolls are doing the marketer's work for them.

It's funny because calling viral on actual discussion has itself become viral.

>>120340
Viral marketing is much more effective than normal advertisements.
>>
Just let 'em lie, I say.
>>
Ignore it OP.

Half the people are doing it ironically (I know because I used to do it).

I make it a personal policy to pirate any game /v/ hypes.

That way, I can't get burnt.

Think of it like this: I hate the vast majority of /v/. They are seriously dumb fuck wits.

Why would you then want to follow what they say about something?

Use /v/ for sharing content not opinions.
>>
It annoys me that its almost impossible to talk about a new game on /v/ if its not a valve game or an EA game that has a 100 threads about how shit it is.
>>
>>117919
It has been all over reddit as well. Marketers are actually confirmed to go on reddit and promote things. Just saying, this could be legit viral marketing. Of course, Reddit has pretty shit taste in game as well, so that could be the reason they like it.
>>
>Elite
>Refined taste
>/v/

That said I don't think Sleepding Dogs has been viralled on /v/, it's no where near as bad as Spec OPs or Borderlands 2 being viralled. A lot of people don't actually know that it's True Crime 3 and think a GTA style game in HK is a pretty cool idea, so I don't see what's wrong with actually discussing this in /v/.
>>
Wait, people take this marketing actually serious? I thought it was just a joke. You really think somebody big companies would advertise their products here? What the fuck

They do exist but /v/ moves so fast it's not that bad.
