The next 4chan Q&A/PMQ will be held on /q/ at 8:00PM ET on Sunday, May 12th.

I'll be spending the night answering questions/listening to feedback this coming Sunday. Don't know what a PMQ is? It's detailed towards the end of this news post.
Simply, it's the opportunity to ask me any questions you'd like, provide feedback, complain, et cetera until I fall asleep or jump off a bridge.

If you can't make it Sunday night and have a question/comment, feel free to send it to moot@4chan.org or on AIM at MOOTCHAT.

4chan Pass Sale ends in 24 hours

Maybe because our parents had $0.70 a gallon that their min wage jobs could afford, while our $4.00 a gallon is like a big middle finger?

Also, kids these days are told there's nothing outside of the city but rednecks, so why would they ever want to leave the land of public transit?

> In a bid to reverse these trends, General Motors has enlisted the youth-brand consultants at MTV Scratch—a corporate cousin of the TV network responsible for Jersey Shore—to give its vehicles some 20-something edge. “I don’t believe that young buyers don’t care about owning a car,” says John McFarland, GM’s 31-year-old manager of global strategic marketing. “We just think nobody truly understands them yet.” Subaru, meanwhile, is betting that it can appeal to the quirky eco-conscious individualism that supposedly characterizes this generation. “We’re trying to get the emotional connection correct,” says Doug O’Reilly, a publicist for Subaru. Ford, for its part, continues to push heavily into social media, hoping to more closely match its marketing efforts to the channels that Millennials use and trust the most.

Unfortunately, things have to get worse before they get better. We're living in a luxurious time- it may not seem that way, but we are. Most people in developed countries don't have to constantly worry about starving or being murdered, and live pretty comfortable lives. That gives people loads of free time to bitch. Bitch about how grils aren't represented in videogames, bitch about how minorities flood the country, and bitch about not getting the new iphone.

Our generation needs a struggle to unify and grow.
>>
>>14021674

If we can somehow eliminate human greed, a good deal of good will happen. When I say greed, I don't mean people who earn a lot, I mean the elite who have millions that they will never spend or need.

Create a country and national identity people actually want to work for.

A lot of people in our generation (assuming you're about 18-23) can see how bad the world is right now. How fucked loans and mortgages are. How bad the economy is globally. With all of this doom and gloom they lose the will to work. You can't expect people to eat shit, accept it and ask for more the next day.

So what do the rest of us do, the ones who need to make a living for ourselves and want to actually join the adult world?

Majority of modern automobiles are not worth the investment. Every automobile begins to depreciate the second it leaves the lot and in the end you're left with a product that is only worth a fraction of the total investment. It's a money-sink.

For example the 2013 Corvette. Starting price of around 50k standard model without options, factor in general maintenance, insurance, financing.. you're looking at 60k possibly 80k for a car that you will be lucky to resell for 20k-30k three years from now.

Really the only modern automobiles worth owning are European supercars and those are pretty far out of my price range. Granted they depreciate also but I'm sure if you can afford a F12berlinetta that's probably the least of your concerns.

Currently restoring a '71 442 barnfind purchased from ebayMotors for tad over $6000, at least 30k has been spent so far and it's near completion. I'm looking at 40-60k total spent restoring this car, cash that can easily be recouped plus some at any classic car auction. Really have no plans to resell though, this bad motherfucker is going to be a daily driver.

I was changing the fucking oil in my dads van a few days back, and in order to get to the oil filter, I had to stick my arm down a 4 inch crack fo about 2 feet, then somehow bend my arm at a 90 degree angel and go another 6 inches, only to find out my normal filter wrench won't fit and I need the $30 Toyota brand wrench.

>Study hard and get A's, they said
>The loans are worth it, they said

38k in debt, 2 years of work experience doing school-sponsored contract work, plus an external internship, and decent connections in my local area, with a STEM degree.

One year, no jobs. I can't even sell myself for 30k to employers. That's roughly 13 dollars an hour, and I can't get even basic tech support jobs for it. You know who hired me? Best Buy. I spent 4 years, got the grades, degree, and put in the work -only- to be faced with Geek Squad.

Fuck this generation. I barely make loan payments and my studio apartment in a shitty neighborhood off of $9.50. I have $100 a month for luxury expenses, or basically one "expense" a week.

My contacts? They're a little troubled too, because companies don't want to hire new grads nearly as much as they want to hire experienced professionals. ~400 resumes per job posting? I had an interview with a shitty tech center that claimed "We closed the posting after receiving 600 applications in less than 24 hours, and chose 30 to interview for the two spots."

Oh, but just apply to jobs in other cities! 'Kay, and then the process repeats itself, because many cities are far larger than my 250k city population.

I don't spend because I DON'T HAVE ANY MONEY TO SPEND. I was lied to for 21 fucking years. Lied point blank to my face, and they didn't even care. Yeah, I'd like to have a new phone, or computer, or game, or book, or movie, let alone a car that isn't 20 years old already. But guess what? I can't spend what I don't fucking have, can I?

It's your fault for pursuing a role in an economic niche that has an overabundance of persons pursuing the same. For every 1 STEM job, there are 2 people with STEM degrees, in the U.S. I suggest finding another niche or fucking off to a place like Australia, where STEM degrees are actually in demand.

Economics isn't hard. There's absolutely nothing wrong with anything you've said. Of course companies prefer to hire people with experience as opposed to no experience.

Yeah, but I think we have a right.

When you fuck up the first world your children have every right to demand their pound of flesh from you. We were birthed into a country and a world our parents fucked up, and they still try to siphon all the money back to themselves to retire in luxury.

We're narcissistic and selfish. We learned it from our greedy and arrogant parents.

So much this, especially the part about college (inb4 muh STEM fields). A Bachelor's degree doesn't do shit for you anymore, when there was a time in history when you could graduate, travel around the country/fuck off for a year or so, then walk into about any business and apply (person to person, none of this online bullshit) and generally win a decent job. Now bachelor's degrees are so insanely common that they're par for the course, and what's the old fucking complication? Experience. Now, though, you've got the axe over your head that is student loads (generally speaking). I basically paid for a new car which I will never get to drive by going to college, yet I will pay for it for years to come.

Boomers & co. need to shut the fuck up about college being a master key to your desired career. It's more like a fucking raffle ticket these days. Masters and PhDs have more luck, to be sure, but that will eventually change also. I'm honestly glad I got the fuck out when I did, and feel bad for some friends who are still in school pursuing MS and Doctorate degrees - even IF they land a significantly high paying job they'll have easily more than 50k of debt to work out from under.

if anyone wants to know why Gen Y and Gen Z are really fucked over, watch this video by the worlds leading Labour economist.

It has nothing to do with Gen Y and Gen Z, but the stage of Capitalist production we are at, where Careers are becoming rarer and rarer and most people are forced into "precarious" work (contracts, casual, part time) because of automation and globalization.

TIME's entire view of Gen Y is the inner city 1% rich kids they get and interns in the CBD of NYC, then superimpose that on an entire generation. Like all mainstream publications, they don't dare question the larger material conditions that are actually causing the "precariat" to form.

And where did those internal issues spring up from?

Every modern issue that we face today is either
a) something that's been a problem for the last generation as well
b) the result of boomer control of our economy, media, industry, government, foreign policy, religion, science (or the lack thereof), etc.

Neocon pricks fucked everything up for us, now they're hoping that we start turning on ourselves first before we all wise up and realize who's really responsible for our problems.

1) Rev up dat student loan debt and get a teaching degree that may or may not work out in the future.

When my dad got out of university in the 80's he had people throwing money at him. Like everyone else of his generation he was married with kids and a mortgage and a car and pension inside a year.

I got out of university in 2007. I hoard money when I'm making it because jobs are scarce, and either pay nothing with civilized hours/locations, or allow you to save a little while having no life (working abroad, in the military, in a mine, on short-term contract). I'm in a likely never-ending cycle of working six months to a year, while having the same time off. I will never own a car or house or have kids or get married because all that shit would be recklessly irresponsible, in an economy where I have no guarantee of a regular income, and often have to move across the country or between countries to get a half decent job.

Personally, I'm not unhappy. I will earn VASTLY less income than e.g. my father in my lifetime - likely some small fraction. Hell, I likely won't ever have any pension aside from wellfare. But on the upside I've lived more, done more, been more places in the last couple years than he has in his whole suburban professional lifetime. What I lack in resources is made up for in freedom and mobility.

p.s. going to hang out in Mozambique and Malawi for a couple months because I can (saved money the last year living like a hobo).

>moving to a country with no drug laws

This. I'm joining the Navy as an officer. $30k/yr starting, room and board fully paid for, on contract for 5 years and then 3 years reserve duty. Medical and dental fully covered while I'm in.

So for five years of my life, I get $150k. That's enough to pay off all my debt and get a nice homestead set up.
>>
>>14028015
Actually, they're looking for IT people too right now. I know, it's "cyber warfare" type bullshit and installing new computers with DoD shit software, but it's something. Personally once I'm done with my officer contract I'm going to stay in the reserves for another 20 years doing part time translation work. Hopefully from home.
>>

The Freeter lifestyle isn't sustainable. Look at Japan, they've been doing that since the 80s. Eventually you're going to settle down with some shit job when you find it, probably in your 30s, and you'll have a few kids you have no energy to raise and they'll be more likely to be crippled or retarded in some way, if your wife is in her 30s when you marry her.
>>
>>14028461

You forgot the most important part of all, the destruction of traditional relationships, marriage, and the nuclear family.

With women being made more masculine and ympywyrd, they become much more undesirable to men. This leads to the men losing all motivation to move forward in life, purse well-paying careers, and start a family. Instead you have young men in their 20s preferring to still live at home, doing nothing but playing video games and surfing around on the internet. The women, seeing that the young men are uninterested/undesirable, decide to chase after minority men, who will dump them and turn them into single moms once the pregnancy bell rings.

It's a fucked up game that millenials have to play, it's no wonder there's a large chunk of us simply refuse to play this rigged game.

In their defense, the development of mass marketing with the development of the TV REALLY fueled economic growth after WW2. How else can you convince people to spend so much money on trinkets and trash?

John Taylor Gatto talks about that in relation to public education. Public Education keeps children from maturing into fully functional adults, and then marketing swoops in to sell them shit they don't need. So when a corporation tries to market their way into your pocket, don't be upset with them. They're just doing what's worked for decades.

It's odd to see people talking about when the economy will "improve" or "get better". What's funny is that these people don't seem to realize that this is the new norm. The economy of 1950s America was literally the most prosperous era in all of human existence, but that prosperity came at a severe cost to future generations (us). If they can get a driverless car working - and they already do in labs and in the military / industry - then the rest follows naturally. The fact that cars spend +95% of their time just sitting not running is a HUGE economic cost that can easily be avoided once you have a driverless car. Plus you can scale back road construction dramatically.

They'll then laugh at the people who lease their cars, who get to drive something brand new every 2 years.

Look on the bright side: we've brought in millions upon millions of 3rd world foreigners to work dead-end drone jobs to pay taxes to keep our parents/grandparents in high style.

Free of that burden, we can move to the 3rd world and enjoy the easy life of simple poverty. I'm not even kidding.

From my perspective it greatly increases my freedom. It means I don't have to wait to borrow my parent's car, since I don't have one, and can instead just phone to borrow one for a bit. And I don't have to stay limited to where public transportation is.

It's certainly much cheaper, in my view, than owning a car. I'd go for it.

I'm too lazy to go into it. Read the Economist a few editions back when there were about 30 articles on the subject.

Basically, once you have driverless cars anyone who does own a car can just let it 'roam' around serving other people when they're not using it. The cars will also be able to intelligently share rides, optimizing pickup and dropoff. Plus there will be plenty of companies with fleets of them out there doing the same.

It will be MUCH cheaper than a taxi: no driver and they will be full doing trips almost constantly (vs. taxis which are empty cruising or idling much of the time), and you will share rides much more often

It's fine for the world to be full of uncertainty and risk. What's not fine is for the current generation of adults to expect kids to conform to social standards and rules during such a time. In an orderly society, a young person who follows the cultural script and makes it to adulthood is guaranteed a reasonable station based on his aptitudes. Of course, young people who are more independent-minded and ambitious may be extraordinarily successful, but an important component of an orderly human society is the notion that doing what you're told will lead to a reasonable outcome. A STEM graduate with a high GPA being lucky to find a $30k/year service sector position is not a reasonable outcome.

And why are they making record profits? Is it because business is "steady"? Or is it because they've cut/outsourced their labor to the bone? Which is fine for profit in the short term but this will fuck them deep and hard in the mid/long term. Despite what retards here will tell you, labor is not fungible and you can't just import a westernized productive working class, especially while minimizing costs (3rd world labor). Ultimately what's true for consumers is true for employers: you get what you pay for.

Where I live a round trip on the bus costs about $5, whereas a round trip in a taxi costs anywhere from $20 to $80 depending on how far you need to go. So taxis are about 10x more expensive than the bus. Where do you think smart-carts will fall on this spectrum of $5-$50?
