Why does "big paper" even exist anymore? Who still uses paper for things?

Pot and hemp would actually make for MUCH better paper industry. Big paper doesn't want this. To prevent this, big paper has lobbied to keep pot illegal and even regulate the everloving shit out of THC free/low THC hemp.

If big paper didn't exist we would have legalized marijuana.

conversion costs. You cannot use a factory converting trees into paper to turn hemp into paper. Its more cost effective to just keep the hemp industry killed.

>>
>>9660171
Sadly, it is not just the paper industry which benefits from this, but many others as well. There's a pic (which I'm sure someone will post) with all the uses of hemp and why it is banned.

They do not want you using forms of recreation that will cause you to question the system and make you a happier person.

They do not want alternatives for paper or biofuels (corn industry biofuel fails to compete).

They do not want alternatives for painkillers, anti-nausea drugs, anti-depression drugs, or anti-inflammatory drugs.

And the best part is, the heads of all these different industries are controlled by a tiny group of people.

The world we live in!
>>
>>9660190
But there are many, many, many things far more detrimental to our health which remain legal even today.
>>
>>9660245
Is the tiny group of people who i assume they are.
>>
>>9660074
Isn't the Declaration of Independence written on hemp paper?
>>
>>9660171
It isn't that much money, all they really have to do is tie hemp to marijuana and let social conservatards do all the work. The voices might be conservatards but the cash is industries like paper and textile threatened by the potential flood of hemp products.
>>
>>9660303
final draft was actually animal skin IIRC, though earlier drafts were probably hemp.
>>
>>9660264
If you're going to say "Jews" you are both right and not right. You are right in the sense that, yes, this coterie has frankly immoral ties to Zionist movements and the Israeli government. But you are wrong in the sense that "the Jews are trying to keep weed illegal," when in fact many of the lobbies and companies which actively suppress this drug are American made and run. Now, we can talk about the extent to which there is collusion between American and Zionist interests, but that is getting off topic. What matters is only that those in power (and it is fitting to refer to them as such, as they see the world in this war) have deemed marijuana a threat to their control system. For this reason, I would look carefully into debates regarding controlled substances.
>>
>>9660306
The reasoning behind this is fucking retarded. Do they realize that after the costs of conversion they would be making even more money?

just google: modern uses hemp

There are several

Industrial hemp cannot possibly get you high but is totally illegal to grow.

With so many industries threatened it is easy for the social conservatives to get the money to outlaw pot, which hemp is tied to. If you could sever the two, both would end up legal.
>>
>>9660398
No ones forcing weed unto anyone.

>Just because it's a plant doesn't mean that it should be legalised.

What.

And that last one, even if it is labeled as a drug, so is booze.
>>
>>9660371
It is not about making money, it is about keeping people ignorant. I also think you underestimate the money these people get from keeping it illegal and funneled to other industries. The point is that, yes, there would be more money to be made for more people were the plant legal. But their goal is not some utilitarian ideal, they want to keep the money bundled up as they see fit.

They would have to completely retool their entire production. It wouldn't be that easy and more importantly they would be inviting competition racing them to the punch until they completed the overhaul. They would also have to shell out for undoing the stigma the have been funding for decades.

Investors hate risk. If they can make enough money by just keep on doing what they are doing they will opt for that.

>Why is it still illegal?
Part of the reason legalization didn't pass in California was (surprise!) illicit pot farmers who's livelihood depends on the price support afforded by the legal status of cannabis. The "emerald triangle" counties of Mendocino, Humboldt and Trinity, with large sectors of the economy dependent on pot revenue, all voted against Proposition 19, which would have legalized it for recreational use. It has been estimated that legalization would have dropped the wholesale price by two thirds, at least, putting them out of business.

In other words, all you stoners can thank your suppliers for keeping the stuff illegal. Way to go.

Meanwhile, the crop that really counts, industrial hemp, which produces more biomass per acre, absorbs more CO2 than any other plant, the most profitable crop that can be grown, is illegal in the US, one of the few countries that does not make a distinction between drug and fiber varieties.

On the plus side we will probably see legalization within the next 12 years.

On the minus side it will probably be 20 before hemp is legal because the laws will only repeal bans on specific uses initialy...corporations aren't people, they're cunts.
>>
>>9660777
and you are free to do that as long as both parties are consenting
>>
>>9660599

Okay, let's talk about that then.

First off, let me say that it is important NOT to compare the effects of this drug to others and say "look it is safer!" We want to claim it is safe only on the plant's own merits.

So let us analyze what the detriments from weed actually are. What's amazing is that even taking an honest approach at the health detriments, there are few to even speak of. We all know the positives, but as far as negatives go there are, as I reckon it, only two.

The first is the health effects of smoking the drug. This can cause respiratory problems (although this is for very heavy users) and possibly cancer as combustion produces carcinogens. However, as far as I know, respiratory problems are not long-term and can be reversed by simply not smoking anymore. And there are many studies which find no link between cancer rates and marijuana usage rates (even with very heavy users). But it doesn't even fucking matter, because if you ingest the drug any other way, you get around these detriments totally! Vaporizing and making edibles both totally negate this impact, and it is, in fact, the illegality of the plant which suppresses these methods of use.

The other major health detriment is mental development problems. There are studies that it can cause demotivation and depression in trials on people under 18. However, the illegality of the drug is what makes it easily available to teenagers (not to mention making it attractive), so keeping it banned actually creates MORE of a public health risk regarding the mental effects.

As such, given the ineffectiveness of the drug war to prevent the only two health harms caused by marijuana usage I can find, I find the continued advocacy for criminalization absolutely abhorrent.

No. I used to be a stoner but had to grow up at some point. While being a stoner, I started to do research, then basically found out that half the forests of the world have been needlessly ground into paper as a direct result of hemp prohibition. It is unfortunate that the drug issue is connected to hemp, because whenever anyone proposes legalizing industrial hemp, it's like
> you're looking for an excuse to get high
so the whole issue is poisoned, never taken seriously. Pic related, a hemp field somewhere not in the USA, 10 tons per acre in four months, 77 percent cellulose, the most profitable crop that can be grown.

As I pointed out above, this is a case of the issue being poisoned. Hemp comes in many varieties. If you hate stoners, you should be all for industrial hemp, because the pollen from seed growing operations would find it's way to the drug varieties, fertilizing intended sinsemilla crops, causing them to go to seed, reducing the resins containing the drugs. This is why you can't hide a drug crop within an industrial crop, another prohibitionist argument shot down.
