It is entirely the state's fault that tips are so expected, because only the state has determined them to be compensation, not a reward.

I dunno, I think people usually tip based on their appreciation of the service. You give shitty service, you get no tip.

When I worked as a waitress I was always on my fucking toes and trying to be as chipper and complacent as possible. People seem to appreciate their ~dining experience~ more when the server is nice. I've known some coworkers who wouldn't refill your cup if you were dehydrated and shriveling up in your seat like a slug. Courtesy receives courtesy.

I always tip 20 percent. I do this partly because I observe some of the assholes that the wait staff have to deal with. It is one way of demonstrating I am better than that. I am always cheerful, say please and thank you. I do this because I am trusting these folks with my health, what I put into my body. I tip even if I am low on cash. It's karma, baby, do unto others as you would have others do unto you. If you don't like to tip, if you think restaurants cost too much, then buy food in the grocery store, cook and clean up for yourself.

This is the base tip I offer for one hour of service.
If my waiter is servicing other tables besides me, I divide the number of tables they're servicing into $5.12, as they can extract tips from them to compensate them for their labor.
Usually a $2 or so tip.
Perfectly fair, servers are certainly not worth more than minimum.

i can't speak for other servers, but i know that regardless of the job i worked, whether it was at gamestop, nordstrom, or olive garden, i give 150% service, not because i'm expecting to get tipped, but because that's how i would want to be treated when i'm out and about. a lot of you guys may not care, but going to a restaurant and getting awesome service is the reason you go out (food and ambience.) if it was just food and you cared about quality, you would never go to a chain restaurant or anything that's not 4 stars.

tipping is a voluntary act on the guest at a restaurant. it means to insure proper service or some shit like that. if the server was fucking awful, don't tip em. but if they went all out, were on top of your refills and catering to your every need on top of being all around pleasant and making you have an enjoyable meal, why not give em at least 10%?

I learned, as a server, yeah most niggers don't tip, and some people don't tip well, but treat every customer like they're made of the finest jewish gold and at the very least, you won't have to deal with rude people (regardless of tip or not.)

Tipping is a beneficial system to the worker, the employer and the customer as it provides an incentive for quality service, keeps the overhead lower for the employer so (s)he can hire more staff than would normally be affordable, and the customer gets a reinforcing system of service that makes it unlikely to get anything worse than standard.

Not according to the minimum wage laws, which allows the employer to shirk his duty to pay his employees if they're paid by the customer through tips.
Naturally, a culture has been created where the customers are expected, if not required, to make such payments so the employer doesn't have to.
This occurs in no other country but ours because no other country but ours has such a law.
