There is a common misconception that Embassies and Consulates have extraterritoriality. As anecdotal evidence of this misconception, people will often say things like, “the US Embassy sits upon United States soil.” For the most part, this is not the case as extraterritoriality is not conferred upon an Embassy or Consulate, but in some situations extraterritoriality may be created by Treaty'.

This is not true. The laws still apply, a person with diplomatic immunity is just (usually) insulated from prosecution. Other people without immunity would not have that protection, but arresting them is a different problem.

Extraterritoriality protects you from the local law, but does not usually impose a foreign law, merely reverting to international law.

No, it is the agreement between the UK and Ecuadorian authorities, the framework is the international law. All buildings are different, some countries consulates are shared offices etc. He gets no protection from the law in there, or prosecution, he is just physically 'protected' from getting collared.

The UK authorities accredit the Ecuador embassy building. If they yanked the accreditation, they could just walk in and arrest Assange. This would be the nuclear option, though.

The diplomatic staff would still have their normal protections, unless the UK authorities decided to tug them as well - they did this with some Syrians and Libyans. Again, hugely unlikely.

Is is not really 'protection', it is more like hiding in a ladies bathroom or in a church.

Extraterritorial protection would protect you from the host nations laws.

In some places it is illegal to shoot a gun say withing 100 yards of a road - if you did this within say an air base with extraterritoriality, near a host country road outside the base, you would not be committing any crime in any jurisdiction. The court would have to dismiss any charges - in theory.

If Assange did this it would be a crime, they would just have to wait to prosecute him.

You can also write the extraterritorial agreements to be pretty well anything you like, they don't require the democratic process of passing laws etc.

why are nazis always right in these?

I've seen both sides and nazis are always right?

because national socialism is basically right.

no, it's not the same thing at all, jesus christ. Are you fucking stupid? The only intersection between the two concepts is what's been described; every other use is different.

Or do you think putting a missile base in the US embassy in, say, Pakistan, would work?

Because even if it's not US soil, it represents the US enough, even to the point where people can consider it US soil

Typical buttmad paultard, got his arguments destroyed "b-but embassies are US soil!!" and then starts screaming "JIDF"

Nice try SIDF

Reading from a prepared statement?

You mean 'should have researched'. Or just known in the first place.

You cannot unsay stupid things in politics.

This image is scattered, messy, and all together illogical; just like everything else libtards do.

it still violates all principles of international law. and then for the administration to blame a youtube video for instigating the attack... and then when all evidence points to them being lying about it... only then do they admit it was a planned attack.

and as hilary demonstrated, the official line is "lol idk"

> worst terrorist attack in us soil since 9/11
> unless you libtards can name another one

Oh ok so we're going to put words into Senator Paul's mouth, and claim he meant "terrorist attack on US soil" ?

(even though that's not what he actually said..)

Ok. I'll play along. Here is a list of criminal acts which have occurred since September 11, 2001, which qualify as acts of "terrorism", and with a higher body count than the incident in Benghazi.

>October 2, 2002 - October 22, 2002. Lee Boyd Malvo and John Allen Muhammed open fire on civilians in the Washington DC metro area in order to "terrorize the nation." 10 confirmed kills, 3 confirmed wounded, 12 potential but unconfirmed victims.

>September 18 to October 9, 2001. Seven letters stating "DEATH TO AMERICA DEATH TO ISRAEL ALLAH IS GREAT" and containing anthrax are mailed to various locations, including news reporters and senators offices. 22 people infected, five killed.

>November 5, 2009. Inspired by al Qaeda, US Army psychiatrist Nidal Malik Hasan opens fire at a boot camp graduation ceremony in Killeen Texas, killing 13 people and injuring 30.

>August 5, 2012. Wade Michael Page, a member of a violent arm of the skinhead movement and carefully monitored terror suspect identified by the Southern Poverty Law Center walks into a Sikh Temple in Oak Grove, Wisconsin and opens fire on non whites, in order to "send a message" to other non whites. Six dead, four wounded.

***
All acts of terror. All on US soil. All greater tragedies than Benghazi.
>>
>>9616231
>(even though that's not what he actually said..)
He clarified on Jew Blizter
>>
>>9616280
So his clarification is only slightly less wrong.

See the examples here.
>>9616231
Every one of these incidents .. acts of terror .. committed by US citizens, on US soil, were greater tragedies, than Benghazi.

We shouldn't be measuring this.

But if Senator Paul .. and, fuckin, *YOU*, really wanna measure? Benghazi always comes up short. Always.

it doesn't matter what the hell Paul meant. stop deflecting.

what matters--even though clinton exasperatedly stated otherwise--is that our consulate was raided and representatives of our country were murdered. apparently dems don't give a shit, because to do so would be asking too many questions of Dear Leader.
>>
>>9616558
>Every one of these incidents .. acts of terror .. committed by US citizens, on US soil, were greater tragedies, than Benghazi.
And the point was that the US was being attacked- which implies a nonamerican attacker.
>>
>>9616640
Terrorism is terrorism, be it foreign or domestic.
>>
>>9616640
So when he said "the worst tragedy since 9/11" , what he really meant was "the biggest body count of American citizens perpetrated by militarily trained non American citizens against American citizens housed in sovereign American soil .... since 9/11" .. right?

Why didn't he just say that?

Oh that's tight. Because he's an opportunistic teabagger and the wall of text wouldn't have packed the soundbyte punch.

Well, I'm sure its his only gaffe. His presidential campaign will be fiiiiiine..
>>
I don't know why the GOP keeps trying to push this.

Remember when Mitt Romney was criticizing Obama before the ambassador's body was even cold?

How'd that work out for him, again?

remember when Obama slept like a baby the night of the attack and in the morning flew to Vegas to do some good ol campaignin'?

The US government is tracking down the people who did it. Just like every other embassy attack that's occurred in the past decade and a half.
