hay, /g/ents. going to college. need help choosing course to take.

ive narrowed it down to two choices. computer science or computer engineering? pros and cons? why computer science? why computer engineering?

>here's some bacon to help you decide
>>
>>33042245 (OP)
I can't eat this shit.
Come back with substance.

Computer Science is software, Computer Engineering is hardware. Follow your heart.
>>
>>33042245 (OP)
Computer engineering if you like opening up computers and doing shit with the hardware.

If you like programming go with computer science, but warning, programming isn't everyone's bread and butter, same for computer engineering.
>>
>>33042360

so if i go for computer engineering, does that mean i work with hard drives, cpu's and that stuff?
>>
>>33042377
No, you still work with humans.

But you will work on computer parts.
>>
op link us to your school curriculums for both majors
it will help us decide.
>>
currently a CmpE major. My school's curriculum seems to be pretty similar to EE until you get to end of 4th semester and on, then it's kind of a pick-and-choose between upper-level EE and CS classes
>>
>>33042245 (OP)
Le le le bacon ecks dee!

Le upboat!

Don't forget the narwals!

Seriously, fuck off with that shit.

CompE is hardware, CS is software.

You should get to sleep. Junior year is the most important year of high school.
>>

>You should get to sleep.

Justice never sleeps.
>>
>>33042487
>>33042487

i know the fucking difference between those two, anon. all i want to know is which one is better to take up.

are you retarded? One is hardware, one is software. You pick which aspect of technology interests you more.
>>
>>33042543
DO YOU LIKE TO WORK WITH HARDWARE MORE

DO YOU LIKE TO WORK WITH HARDWARE MORE

THIS IS NOT HARD

>>>/adv/
>>
>>33042543
Whichever one you like, obviously. Either way you will be in demand and people will pay out the nose to hire you straight out of college.
>inb4 it depends
>inb4 implying
>inb4 inb4

That's like asking if you should be a doctor or janitor. Computer engineering is hard as fuck, and unless you are extremely studious, you're not going to make it.

Computer science is kind of being phased out and outsourced.
>>
I have a question about this too, and I think op would benefit from hearing the answer.

I want to work with the more low-level and scientific/mathematical side of computers, like kernels, the "guts" behind operating systems that you don't really see, or perhaps encryption algorithms, or stuff like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVH1E5gGLf8

Is it feasible to have a career in this more scientific, technical side of computing, rather than the end-user/consumer oriented side? What's required to get into the field?
>>
>>33042487
you are seriously getting this autismal over an image OP used?
>>
>>33042560
No, Computer Engineering is software and hardware. CS is just software.
>>
>>33042620
>Computer science is kind of being phased out and outsourced.
u wot, fuk off m8.

Computer science will always been needed as computer engineering will since it's the entire ideology behind software and how computers/technology works. If anything computer engineering is being phased out as hardware becomes more stagnant and software is more important.
>>
>>33042661
Computer engineers are the people who design CPUs and hard ware. They also can write the software for it.

CS are basically just glorified code monkeys, who can be shipped out to India easily.
>>
>>33042623
That's computer science then.

For example here is the CS at my university
http://www.cs.bham.ac.uk/internal/modules/
>>
>>33042642
My university is well-reputed for its Engineering School and they only require you to take 3 credit hours of software, total. So I guess in the loosest sense possible only your statement is true.
>>
>>33042713
Most places have you take as much software as hardware courses, because as an engineer you're expected to be able to do both sides. When you gen in the field, you probably just won't be able to do any software positions.

Hardware is growing at a lesser rate, hardware way above the needs of users (normal users). The explosion in apps and app stores has made programmers and the general software side of tech way more important.

https://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9238266/Unemployment_rate_for_electrical_engineers_soars
http://www.slate.com/blogs/future_tense/2013/04/12/why_pc_sales_are_declining_old_pcs_still_work_just_fine.html
http://techland.time.com/2013/04/11/sorry-pc-industry-youve-apparently-managed-to-perfect-the-pc/
>>
>>33042748
the software side is hardly anything compared to that of CS. It's mainly just management systems or programming your hardware on a low level.
>>
>>33042762
so the hardware is just going to spawn out of the ground
>>
>>33042762

OP here.

so, you're basically saying
computer science > computer engineering?
>>
>>33042809
No, those sources don't mean shit. You're much more highly trained as CE. You can basically do anyone's job as a CS major with proper training in CE. Also CE is pretty much the same as EE with a few specific course changes. You could go back for a semester and basically get another major.
