Everyone know that the US military is larger that all the world's other militaries combined. This will not be any big deal for US national defense, at least not directly.

This is much more of a problem for the rest of Asia. China, Korea, and Japan are all having a few island disputes right now, and an increase in Chinese naval power is sure to have an effect on regional politics. Asian politics are fucking horrible though. They all still hate each other from WWII and the Cold War.

If the Chinese navy keeps getting stronger and actually moves to claim one of the disputed islands, massive tensions could snap, alliances could form, and a regional or global war could start. This is the only worst case scenario. China would have to be based retarded to fuck with any US allies in the region like Japan or Korea. It's unlikely that the regional island disputes will get anywhere past old men shouting at each other.

Okay you realize that America has for its entirety been living in utter paranoia of anyone that might challenge it? That's why we freak out about China building one carrier vs. our eleven. Navally, they're nowhere near us, and they don't have the budget, or, believe it or not, the manufacturing capacity to get there any time soon (naval manufacturing is not a big thing in China.) Even if they created a navy on par with us in twenty years (Unlikely) they'd still be screwed logistically because the US would have superior naval base arrangements and logistics.

It's actually been closer to 35 years, which is why people are saying the fairy tale is about to end. China hasn't had to create a totally new product or job, it basically makes whatever is selling in the West. Which is great, except it only carries you so far before the growth from following that trend peters out. And it does remain to be seen whether China can actually pony up to the table and come up with the next Google or whatever.

Which is bad, because China really only has one shot at making it to the big leagues, because a prolonged stall in growth will force China to squeeze their burgeoning middle class for money to help the vast number of poor in the country, who will opt into the military once job growth stalls resultant from poor growth.

The middle class will, of course, resist getting pinched like this, and it's not impossible a large army of peasants from the interior will march to the coast of China and shut the country off from foreigners. Again.

Actually, the funny thing with large organizations like the military is that promising them unlimited funds, like we've been doing for the past decade, is actually bad for them. They will inevitably waste them (just as they have been.) The upside to all this is that they've been developing some holy shit insane weapons systems and then being like "nah, we don't wanna buy that, we're going to develop an even more insane weapon system."

With the drawdown in Iraq and Afghanistan, I expect the US will take some time and

1. Cut back our budget. Not as drastically as we did during the cold war, but still pretty drastically.
2. Downsize conventional forces. The fact is, a lot of the 'army jobs' are just there because of bureaucracy and could easily be automated away. In addition, a lot of the 'combat jobs' could be automated away too very soon. We might drop our military below 1 million, but look for our soldiers to be commanding fleets of robots on the ground.
3. We'll cut back some carrier fleets. Carriers, at least in their current form, aren't going to be as necessary, when we replace our pilots with drones. We may have smaller carriers (since drones have a much shorter takeoff), and to make up for the lack of psychological impact, we'll invest in those pretty railguns and lasers.

The point of space bombardment is that it would be impossible to counter (no planes to shoot down) and relatively cheap after initial investment (very little fuel use, destructive power comes from kinetic energy.) It would be a lot cheaper and safer than sending stealth bombers halfway across the world.

Well this hasn't been mentioned in this thread yet:

Just recently (not sure if 2011 or 2012) they put 3 people into orbit, and a space station. The station isn't manned but is planned to be manned in 2013.

So at the moment Russia and China are the only nations on Earth who have the capability to put humans into space.
