Everyone know that the US military is larger that all the world's other militaries combined. This will not be any big deal for US national defense, at least not directly.

This is much more of a problem for the rest of Asia. China, Korea, and Japan are all having a few island disputes right now, and an increase in Chinese naval power is sure to have an effect on regional politics. Asian politics are fucking horrible though. They all still hate each other from WWII and the Cold War.

If the Chinese navy keeps getting stronger and actually moves to claim one of the disputed islands, massive tensions could snap, alliances could form, and a regional or global war could start. This is the only worst case scenario. China would have to be based retarded to fuck with any US allies in the region like Japan or Korea. It's unlikely that the regional island disputes will get anywhere past old men shouting at each other.

China has over a billion people, with such a population democracy and complete freedom is incompatible without producing total chaos and confusion.
Chinese have a nature and mentality that only functions properly under authority. Cry about it. Authority is the best and only productive thing for China. Last time they had a democracy it ended up in millions dead.
Chinese also have a completely different perception on time and how change happens than us in the West. Their nature also doesn't revolve colonizing militarily like we westerners did even though they had navies that could have granted them the whole of Eastern Asia, because their nature and mentality doesn't allow it, unlike with us.

Cry more little bitch nigga.

Only those who wish destruction upon China without knowing ANYTHING about the people, history and the country would call upon western mentalities and radical ideologies to be imposed upon it.
>>
>>7670254

The modern doctrine for a full-scale naval conflict is attrition, so it would make more sense for China to stock up on ammo and floating missile platforms with the goal of getting the US to try and build more ships than they can sink. Which they've done. It's why China and the US will not directly fight a big war, and it's why the US Navy is going to get its budget drastically cut and hopefully see carriers retired. Although knowing the Pentagon, they're going to try and keep the ridiculous carriers floating for as long as possible.

The goal of the Chinese carrier is national dickwaving.

>>7670473

Reagan didn't do anything to the USSR, as its economy was already completely fucked before Reagan had been elected to any office. The USSR couldn't have a functioning, competitive economy thanks to Stalin's policies and purges and the legacy they left in the forms of Brezhnev and Chernenko. It only survived as long as it did because it was easy to keep the citizens from knowing what they were missing (they already knew that everything they read was lies, but before the Internet came along that was all they had). Gorby saw that changes in information technology would make that completely impossible to sustain, and introduced glasnost. Then he accidentally destroyed what little economy the USSR had with perestroika.

Basically, the USSR killed itself. Much like any big empire, it simply had an incredible amount of inertia that kept it shambling along for decades.
>>
If the US and China went to war, we would still crush them pretty easily, and it would never happen anyway, we are too reliant on each other. They need they're money and we need our products. In either situation, we would be harmed less.

The Manchu Qing Dynasty gained control over eastern Xinjiang as a result of a long struggle with the Zunghars (Dzungars) that began in the 17th century.

The Dzungars suffered important loss in the brutal campaigns and the smallpox epidemic at the time. One writer, Wei Yuan, described the resulting desolation in what is now northern Xinjiang as: "an empty plain for several thousand li, with no Oirat yurt except those surrendered." It has been estimated that 80% of the 600,000 or more Zunghars were destroyed by a combination of disease and warfare, and it took generations for it to recover.

The USA has been pushing the technological envelope militarily that entire time, so by that line of thought the Chinese took 20 years to finally adopt a part of western technology. I don't understand how that is significant globally.

Also, I find it funny how the j-15 looks strikingly similar to the F-15

Okay you realize that America has for its entirety been living in utter paranoia of anyone that might challenge it? That's why we freak out about China building one carrier vs. our eleven. Navally, they're nowhere near us, and they don't have the budget, or, believe it or not, the manufacturing capacity to get there any time soon (naval manufacturing is not a big thing in China.) Even if they created a navy on par with us in twenty years (Unlikely) they'd still be screwed logistically because the US would have superior naval base arrangements and logistics.

Where we SHOULD be worrying is Space Weaponry. Space has the potential to make many earthbound systems obsolete, and we've let our space program stagnate for so long
>>
>>7671871

We don't need a large conventional military, though. We just need one capable of projecting force anywhere around the globe, one that's highly mobile, highly technologically advanced. We can cut costs and make that shift simultaneously.

>>7671794

It's actually been closer to 35 years, which is why people are saying the fairy tale is about to end. China hasn't had to create a totally new product or job, it basically makes whatever is selling in the West. Which is great, except it only carries you so far before the growth from following that trend peters out. And it does remain to be seen whether China can actually pony up to the table and come up with the next Google or whatever.

Which is bad, because China really only has one shot at making it to the big leagues, because a prolonged stall in growth will force China to squeeze their burgeoning middle class for money to help the vast number of poor in the country, who will opt into the military once job growth stalls resultant from poor growth.

The middle class will, of course, resist getting pinched like this, and it's not impossible a large army of peasants from the interior will march to the coast of China and shut the country off from foreigners. Again.
>>
>>7671950

I think part of the scale-down is due to fiscal and economic problems. But another is the shift away from conventional forces to a military composed of special forces, technical forces, and strategic and tactical ops would naturally led to lower costs, because conventional forces are costly to deploy and maintain.

>>
>>7671942

Not hard at work enough. We should have bombardment systems in space by now.

>>7671950

Actually, the funny thing with large organizations like the military is that promising them unlimited funds, like we've been doing for the past decade, is actually bad for them. They will inevitably waste them (just as they have been.) The upside to all this is that they've been developing some holy shit insane weapons systems and then being like "nah, we don't wanna buy that, we're going to develop an even more insane weapon system."

With the drawdown in Iraq and Afghanistan, I expect the US will take some time and

1. Cut back our budget. Not as drastically as we did during the cold war, but still pretty drastically.
2. Downsize conventional forces. The fact is, a lot of the 'army jobs' are just there because of bureaucracy and could easily be automated away. In addition, a lot of the 'combat jobs' could be automated away too very soon. We might drop our military below 1 million, but look for our soldiers to be commanding fleets of robots on the ground.
3. We'll cut back some carrier fleets. Carriers, at least in their current form, aren't going to be as necessary, when we replace our pilots with drones. We may have smaller carriers (since drones have a much shorter takeoff), and to make up for the lack of psychological impact, we'll invest in those pretty railguns and lasers.
4. SPACE MOTHERFUCKER SPACE.

>We should have bombardment systems in space by now.

Yea China is at that crossroads where it could either pull through and become something great, or fizzle out and go through the Russian collapse of communism/becoming a oligarch ruled cesspool of no great importance. On one hand I hope it succeeds, because it drives America to not stagnate and do more with itself, on the other I wouldn't want to see a Chinese ruled world.

>>7671984

Sounds like you're referencing the rods of god with your use of 'kinetic energy.'

That's interesting because it is basically a gun: a projectile with a lot of kinetic energy fucking shit up, but a large difference is that instead of popping in a new clip when it is time to reload you have to send up a rocket.
>>
All of Asia loves China. Silly Americans.

Completely valid point although suddenly nukes raining down from LEO is the kinda thing to make the rest of the world go dafuq you doin bro
>>
>>7672221

>The jet isn't old but your point still stands.

That's true. They had to develop and build new jets to land on their carrier, because after they retrofitted the carrier they realized none of their current planes could land on it.

Some threat.
>>
This would get me into a lot of shit if I said this outside of this thread and indeed irl, as a European.

I prefer having America on top over China.

I prefer having America on top over the EU.

I don't want to be ruled by the EU, especially with any sort of military force. They're cunts.
>>
>>7672257

Yeah, but one rocket could potentially keep them loaded for years.

No, indiscriminate orbital bombardment is the kinda thing that gets the rest of the world on its knees, pleading "Please, spare me, M'Lord, and I'll give you all this wonderful tribute."
>>
>>7672288
Yea but what will the rest of the world do, considering they're now facing nukes or rods from god raining down on them from LEO.

PPP stands for purchasing power PARITY on a per capita measure. PER CAPITA. Not gross. Learn what a term means before you start slinging it around on the internet.

So the Chinese are bad at making everything, right?

Well this hasn't been mentioned in this thread yet:

Just recently (not sure if 2011 or 2012) they put 3 people into orbit, and a space station. The station isn't manned but is planned to be manned in 2013.

So at the moment Russia and China are the only nations on Earth who have the capability to put humans into space.
