Gregor Samsa was a mild mannered astronaut until he awoke one morning on the International Space Station to find that he had metamorphosed into a giant Tardigrade.

Really? That's like my favorite book ever. As I see it, Russians are great at writing stories, but they don't translate very well into english, and stuff like Karamazov and W&P are very grating and hard to read. Nabokov is Russian style, but in English, so it's a more "genuine" experience, since there is no translator. Lolita actually doesn't have much pedostuff, mostly contained in the first few chapters.

Kafka moves into Hidamari sou but is evicted after a few days because the deposit bounced. He wanders the streets starving and in a tubercular daze. An interior monologue expounds on issues ranging from the facelessness of societal institutions, the absurdity of existence and how he wished he was a red Indian. He grows more emaciated until finally he starves to death, ending the series.

>Reading the KJV Bible straight through

Why would you do this to yourself? At least skip the boring stuff like Leviticus, Deuteronomy, etc.
>>
>>75523670
I still want to finish the Edda and the Quran. Especially the latter is very interesting when read within the historical context. How quickly the Prophet's opinions change when real world politics demand a different paradigm...
>>
>>75523447
A bit dated but it is always interesting to compare different mentalities with our own. If you are into political philosophy you could try Machiavelli or Spinoza. Habermas, Apel, Rawls, blabla would be the next step but, oh well
>>
>>75523826
Well, people have decided that it's important enough to be worth writing down and preserving for hundreds of years, so I can take the time to read it, even if it is dull. After going through these sections once, I likely won't do it again though. There's still a few surprisingly powerful scenes that make it worth it though (Namely, after the anointing/consecration of Aaron and his sons, God comes down into and then out of the tabernacle before the tribes of Israel in a holy fire, and everyone 'falls upon their face'' Really well-written stuff).

>>75523832
I had the prose Edda a while back, but I've since lost it. It's on my to-do list, same with the Quran. The fact that it's one of the most (if not THE most) self-referential religious texts, and is written to be 'circular' makes it really interesting to me. I'm going to have to find a good translated version though, because I don't speak classical Arabic.
>>
Tell me /a/: Why can I discuss literature with you, but not manga?

Same reason discussions on vaguely off-topic things succeed on every other board. Less people are involved, and the people that are involved tend to be less opinionated because it's not their 'primary hobby,' so they usually don't know too much about it (as compared to someone who spends all their time doing nothing but reading and discussing books on /lit/, say.)
