though this is by Herman Cain's decree a troll thread, I would assume this is because liberals view the fetus as not necessarily a person. Arguably, this is true; up until a certain point, the fetus has no complex nervous system or brain, the very things that make us human. Of course there is the concept of a soul, but that's purely a religious/spiritual idea and thus doesn't have a place within government policy. From a non-spiritual point of view, you might argue that killing the fetus is wrong because it has the potential to be human. This stance also has issues since the human body produces somewhere between several thousand (if you're female) to several billion (if male) potential humans.

The stance against the death penalty, at least in my opinion, is based on the idea that death isn't really much worse of a punishment than life in prison. I also don't think it actually deters crime all that much (though I'll have to look up the statistics), and there's the distinct possibility that we may end up killing innocent people, which is just terrible.
