I'll be doing the first "PMQ style" Q&A thread (details) on /q/ this Wednesday at 10:00PM ET. Look for a link in the global announcement area.

PS: You can hide these announcements with the [-] button to the left now. It'll automatically show new ones and keep old ones hidden.

Janitor applications are now closed. Thanks to everyone who applied! We received 7,500 in 24 hours.
→ TWO NEWS POSTS: "JOINING THE FUTURE, ONE COMMIT AT A TIME" & "BETTER MODERATION" ←

4chan now has a full-featured, inline extension. Read more about it on the news page. The extension is open source and on GitHub.
Some features are enabled by default—to disable, click [Settings] in the upper right-hand corner and select "Disable the extension".
In addition to the extension, 4chan now has a read-only JSON API. Crude documentation is available on GitHub.Our inline extension now supports image hover previews, and contains a few small tweaks.

>Bibb County's Haitian-born superintendent Romain Dallemand came into the job last year with a bag of changes he calls "The Macon Miracle." There are now longer schools days, year-round instruction, and one mandate nobody saw coming: Mandarin Chinese for every student, pre-K through 12th grade.

>"Students who are in elementary school today, by 2050 they'll be at the pinnacle of their career," Dallemand says. "They will live in a world where China and India will have 50 percent of the world GDP. They will live in a world where, if they cannot function successfully in the Asian culture, they will pay a heavy price."

How does this make you feel /pol/?

Oikophobic bullshit. Imagine if the US gave up on the Cold War and taught all the kids Russian.

No. We taught our kids the skills - mathematics, science - necessary to lead their country into a new day. We would rather breed a new generation of leaders rather than a new generation of bootlickers.
>>
If it wasn't for the Mexican invasion necessitating Spanish classes, more people would be learning a language that will have practical value in an age of increasing Chinese power.

>Instructors and other young teachers from China are being provided to Bibb County schools by a nearby Confucius Institute, one of a number of nonprofit cultural centers partially funded by the Chinese government. Beijing wants to spread Mandarin abroad, and at just $16,000 per instructor per year, the price is right for Dallemand.
>funded by the Chinese government
>Beijing wants to spread Mandarin abroad
>>
>funded by the Chinese government

Good. It's not like we can afford it ourselves.
>>
>Want to teach our kids to be bilingual.
>Bad

Keep it on staying stupid republicans and we'll keep stereotyping you as retards.
>>
I believe the prediction is accurate and the policy is smart. A rare example of the public school system actually delivering a valuable education. I have been learning Mandarin myself for the past 2 years for the same reason.
>>
>>5430833
> We taught our kids the skills - mathematics, science - necessary to lead their country into a new day.

You mean everything America hates thanks to niggers and spics who ruin the education system and will become the majority soon?
>>
This is cultural imperialism. Beware of the yellow peril
>>
Meh. I wish I was taught foreign language as a kid.

Also, looks like the Chinese are in this thing for the long haul, lol.
>>
What's wrong with teaching our children another language? We already cater to the wetbacks infesting this country by forcing Spanish down the throats of students. Fuck, if I was still in school, I'd rather learn Mandarin than Spanish.

Doubtful. Google is throwing more money at decent translation than you could count. Google translate sucks ass right now but that hasn't been cause for them to stop.
>>
I feel like this faggot needs his ass kicked. This is America and we speak english. What point is there in being bilingual when everyone speaks english? I refuse to learn a second language because it diminishes American exceptionalism
I hope this fuck gets fired tomorrow

In 2050 China will be a smoldering ruin of a post-industrial nation thanks to the one child policy making the average age there 87.
>>
Providing they still teach all the other stuff to standard this sounds like a good idea. Learning other languages is never a bad thing and it seems inevitable that China is going to have a bigger world presence in the coming years.

The only argument I see against this kind of thing would be if they were lowing the standards of other subjects. If it takes and our children end up bilingual it will only help them in the future, learning another language isn't the same as being indoctrinated by them, it could even be used to even the playing feel in transactions between the two cultures.

chinese imperialism all the teachers are CCP members and spy for the CCP

their language is obsolete... it's tonal and that is just silly.
>>
Children who study bilingually have not only higher language skills (in both languages) but better reasoning facilities, on par with those who grow up playing a musical instrument. Developmentally speaking, the ability to translate between broader schema sets results in better critical thinking skills. Furthermore, it is easier to learn grammar when you have another grammar for comparison; it also gives you a reason for that comparison.
tl:dr; dumb people can't even speak their own language.
>>
>>5431089
>and like any other language that they don't even experience, it'll be all gone from their memory in a few years
This.

Fluency only comes from submersion. That's why high school foreign language is useless. People forget that shit within a matter of years.
>>
Teaching all dem niggers Mandarin so they can go to China.

Biggest mistake they could ever make, lel.
>>
Why are they trying to teach blacks another language when they have so much trouble with english?
>>
language classes are not about teaching the language but exposing people to their culture. it's stupid and should be banned from schools. people learn languages best at home with their parents. foreign langauge classes are a waste of time and money.
>>
What an ignorant shit.
I know Mandarin, and let me tell you: I can only talk to a few Chinese people, mostly Northern city dwellers, due to the vast differences in the dialectics in China. People from North China struggle to speak with people from South China, and end up using English to confirm business deals.
We should fucking teach our kids how to speak and write English well before teaching them some gook language.

Everyone in this thread is either retarded or never attended high school. At least two years of foreign language is mandatory. This school is just taking it up a notch

Not to mention most universities and colleges make it mandatory to take at least three years of foreign language as well.
>>
>>5431265
It was three years at my high school and guess what? It was useless. I'm no more fluent in spanish then I was before I took all those classes.

Why would you take an all-around failure and take it up a notch?

It generally takes more than three years to learn a language. If you're learning a language for 12 years, you'll most likely almost be fluent in it.

Given that blacks can't even speak English properly and have to come up with some niggerish mumble, how long before they scream DAS RACIS at this since it's a fuck sight harder to learn Mandarin.
>>
>>5431321
My major is computer science and I was still required to take a foreign language.
>>
>>5431321
depends entirely upon the school

if you're doing a science degree, it won't kill you to minor in a foreign language anyway, though, and it can certainly help you when you start looking for a job around the globe, which, if you're a science major and not using the opportunity to get a job somewhere awesome, then you suck
>>
>>5431162
You know shit, buddy. I've been working in Chinese company for 2 years and we have different kinds of Chinamen here, south, south-east, north, whatever - all use putonghua just fine.
>>
>>5431325
Anyone that has become fluent will tell you that it requires submersion in the language and culture. They won't get that in the US. Unless you're planning on splitting every class day between Mandarin and English. In which case you will more than likely end up with students that can't communicate properly in EITHER language.

The article clearly states that students from that area already have subpar English skills. Why the fuck would you tack Mandarin on top of that?
>>
Mandarin and calligraphy make kids smarter when I have kids they'll learn em at school.
>>
>>5431457
also it gives them shitty eyesight after a few years of learning
>>
I've been learning Mandarin for about 4 years in college. There is a Confucius Institute at my university. The Confucius Institutes are tied to the Chinese government because they issue official Mandarin fluency tests to foreigners. Kids in China start learning English at about age 10 and continue learning into college. We've been pushing people to learn Spanish for so long so we can talk to poor spics. It's better to have our kids learn Chinese so they can at least talk to rich Chinamen. The Hispanics who comes to the US need to learn ENGLISH, not the other way around. The purpose of American students learning Chinese is so they can potentially do business in China in the future.

All that being said, we need to teach these little niggers to speak English properly before any foreign language.
>>
this is the kind of forward thinking we need, and have lacked for the period of rule by boomer scum. they're not being taught ONLY chinese; they're getting some key experience and exposure at an early age, which will help those among them who later chose to learn the language immensely. if we have to fight another 'cold war' and don't have any chinese speakers, we won't stand a chance.
>>
All Americans should learn to speak a second language. Since the US government is not steping up to it, the Chinese government has every right to step up to the challenge.
>>
>>5434685
but they already speak Spanish
>>
>>5434838
Thing is that at high school, they offered Japanese as a second language, and Spanish as a Second language, and French as a Second Language.

With America under austerity conditions, China is merely filling a void.
>>
Question: If these magical Chinks don't pan out the way you all think? Meaning their whole prolonged economic growth is based on communist lies. What good did learning ching chong chang do for you?

Chinese is spoken at multiple countries: Singapore, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. So it would not be a loss.

As many anons have correctly pointed out, learning a second language, and especially a useful one such as Mandarin, is a good idea. However, China will implode on itself within the next few decades. Their massive growth will become unsustainable. The one child-policy, with an emphasis on primogeniture- a cultural relic the West expunged a while ago, is going to create a very dangerous gender imbalance.

Unfortunately, Spanish will most likely be the more useful as the majority of our country will be beaners within the next 40-50 years.

If being White is especially important to you, I recommend you leave this country before this happens.

Holy shit that teacher chick is so hot.
