If you get rid of them, students will merely start borrowing even more money. Considering the maximum grant per year is about $5500, you'll increase student debt by up to $22000 per student (not including interest, not including students who go for 5 years or more) by getting rid of them.

How do people manage to have a full time job and go to school full time?

For my degree some classes are only taught in the morning and late afternoon. Therefore the schedule is always a mess. It takes me an hour to commute from home to work and back. It would take even longer to commute from school to work and back. Most employers I have worked for are not very flexible with hours.
