In 1139, the Second Lateran Council anathematized crossbows, banning them from use in warfare between Christian states. Not because wounds caused by crossbows were particularly grievous, but because crossbow bolts were armor-piercing. This had led, understandably, to what the nobility thought were an unacceptable number of aristocratic casualties.

Prohibitions against assassination in international law have always struck me the same way: as an agreement that, whatever happens between soldiers, the elites who order them to their death will remain safe. It has never been quite clear that that's ethically justifiable.

Is it time to assassinate Bashar al-Assad?
