All of you anti-OWS trolls are shit-tier. Can't you come up with anything other than "HURR A FEW OF THEM ARE PAINTING GRAFFITI ON BUILDINGS AND SWEARING, THAT MEANS THEY'RE ALL ANARCHISTS," "HURR IF A HANDFUL OF THEM ARE COMMUNISTS THEN THAT MEANS THEY'RE ALL COMMUNISTS," AND "HURR THEY ALL HAVE LIBERAL ARTS DEGREES"?

Seriously. Come on you guys. There's no way that that's the best... or rather, least terrible you can do. Give me some of the good stuff.

I don't care about anecdotal reports of somebody looting something or acting like an asshole, I dislike the OWS movement because of the "progressive stack" bullshit.

    >Occupy Wall Street’s General Assembly operates under a revolutionary “progressive stack.” A normal “stack” means those who wish to speak get in line. A progressive stack encourages women and traditionally marginalized groups speak before men, especially white men. This is something that has been in place since the beginning, it is necessary, and it is important.

    >“Step up, step back” was a common phrase of the first week, encouraging white men to acknowledge the privilege they have lived in their entire lives and to step back from continually speaking. This progressive stack has been inspiring and mind-boggling in its effectiveness. Manissa McCleave Maharawal writes on Racialicious regarding her block. In fact, the Declaration of the Occupation of Wall Street would not have been released if not for the blocking power of a different document a week prior by the Speakeasy caucus (for non-male identified and traditionally marginalized people)

Well, you're wrong about that, but thanks for bringing up the bailout because it raises an important point about the misunderstanding the anti-OWS reactionaries have about what OWS is doing.

And the bailout thing is at the core of it. "We" don't want a bailout. We want you all to recognize that there's something inherently wrong with the level of suffering the rest of America must endure while the billionaires (the aforementioned 1%), individuals who bankrupted the entire world, get to walk away from that horrendous action with their own bailout---one you paid for, by the way---which they then use to pat themselves on the bank with million dollar bonuses.

That's the kind of injustice OWS is moving against. Why would you want to coddle and protect an institution that rewards incredibly rich people for fucking up wholesale? Why hold on to a system that would reward those rich fuckups with your money?

half of your movement participants are government union members who have bankrupted state coffers. You talk about the wallstreet bailout, which was 700 billion, of which the majority has paid back to the tax payer. What you are completely ignoring is the 5-7 trillion in unfunded liabilities to public pensions. Thats why I can't take you seriously because you are being used as a tool for a bailout of public union benefits.

    >Then why did you let unions take over your movement? When their entitlements have bankrupted states left and right.

It's funny, because neither of those statements are accurate. Labor unions bankrupted states left and right? Which ones, specifically, were bankrupted---again, specifically---by labor unions?

And taken over? You realize that OWS is broad enough that unions, and any other organization looking for an end to this ridiculous income disparity, are welcome in the movement, right?

    >Why are there so many demands for debt forgiveness of student loans?

While the demands for student loan forgiveness hardly account for the majority of demands within the protest movement, it's a fair question and it deserves a response.

Part of the problem with the income disparity is a devaluing of undergraduate degrees. So, individuals are getting locked into these loans, the price of which outpace the incomes earned by careers using those degrees.

It's a little like the mortgage crisis. You purchase a house with an 80% mortgage---a responsible home loan---and because the aforementioned fuckbags who bankrupted the world destroyed the mortgage industry, your house is now worth far less then that mortgage. The same is now true of the jobs market. You are required to get a degree in something to get a job somewhere. Except the jobs market is so fucked over that you're now paying more on your student loan than your degree is worth.

inb4 retarded dickering about the value of liberal arts degrees over engineering degrees, non-sequitur and feel free to come back when you have an actual response.

    >Excerpts

Over the past decade the city of San Jose had repeatedly caved to the demands of its public-safety unions. In practice this meant that when the police or fire department of any neighboring city struck a better deal for itself, it became a fresh argument for improving the pay of San Jose police and fire. The effect was to make the sweetest deal cut by public-safety workers with any city in Northern California the starting point for the next round of negotiations for every other city. The departments also used each other to score debating points. For instance, back in 2002, the San Jose police union cut a three-year deal that raised police officers’ pay by 18 percent over the contract. Soon afterward, the San Jose firefighters cut a better deal for themselves, including a pay raise of more than 23 percent. The police felt robbed and complained mightily until the city council crafted a deal that handed them 5 percent more premium pay in exchange for training to fight terrorists. “We got famous for our anti-terrorist-training pay,” explains one city official. Eventually the anti-terrorist-training premium pay stopped; the police just kept the extra pay, with benefits. “Our police and firefighters will earn more in retirement than they did when they were working,” says Reed.

He hands me a chart. It shows that the city’s pension costs when he first became interested in the subject were projected to run $73 million a year. This year they would be $245 million: pension and health-care costs of retired workers now are more than half the budget. In three years’ time pension costs alone would come to $400 million, though “if you were to adjust for real life expectancy it is more like $650 million.” Legally obliged to meet these costs, the city can respond only by cutting elsewhere. As a result, San Jose, once run by 7,450 city workers, was now being run by 5,400 city workers. The city was back to staffing levels of 1988, when it had a quarter of a million fewer residents. The remaining workers had taken a 10 percent pay cut; yet even that was not enough to offset the increase in the city’s pension liability. The city had closed its libraries three days a week. It had cut back servicing its parks. It had refrained from opening a brand-new community center, built before the housing bust, because it couldn’t pay to staff the place. For the first time in history it had laid off police officers and firefighters.

Back in 2008, unable to come to terms with its many creditors, Vallejo declared bankruptcy. Eighty percent of the city’s budget—and the lion’s share of the claims that had thrown it into bankruptcy—were wrapped up in the pay and benefits of public-safety workers. Relations between the police and the firefighters, on the one hand, and the citizens, on the other, were at historic lows. The public-safety workers thought that the city was out to screw them on their contracts; the citizenry thought that the public-safety workers were using fear as a tool to extort money from them. The local joke was that “P.D.” stands for “Pay or Die.” The city-council meetings had become exercises in outrage: at one, a citizen arrived with a severed pig’s head on a barbecue grill. “There’s no good reason why Vallejo is as fucked up as it is,” says longtime resident Marc Garman, who created a Web site to catalogue the civil war. “It’s a boat ride to San Francisco. You throw a stone and you hit Napa.” Since the bankruptcy, the police and fire departments have been cut in half; some number of the citizens who came to Phil Batchelor’s office did so to say they no longer felt safe in their own homes. All other city services had been reduced effectively to zero. “Do you know that some cities actually pave their streets?” says Batchelor. “That’s not here.”

I don't speak for the entire OWS, but I don't think that's accurate. I doubt anyone seriously thinks we should all have the same pay, regardless of occupation or qualification.

But the income gap between the rich and the poor is outrageous. If the market worked like it should, everything would be getting better for everyone. Except, in this recession, in the past year, salaries and benefits for that top 1% quadrupled. In the same period of time, every other salary range remained stagnant or improved by less than a quarter of a percent. There's something inherently wrong with that.

But no one's saying the answer is that we all have exactly the same amount of money in our bank accounts. That's fucking absurd.

Optional surveys meant to gather information, the new tool of oppression used by white supremacists everywhere.
    ------
Big Government has learned that a major internal fight has erupted among Occupy Wall Street organizers after activists began circulating an infographic published by FastCompany, the “progressive business” magazine.

The infographic in question depicts the results of an internal online survey conducted by Occupy Wall Street supporters at occupywallst.org.

The data, compiled by advertising analyst Harrison Schultz and Ford Foundation sociologist Dr. Héctor R. Cordero-Guzmán, were intended to promote the idea, as Dr. Cordero-Guzmán put it, that “the 99% movement comes from and looks like the 99%.”

Some activists were outraged, however, that the survey results and the infographic show Occupy Wall Street to be 81.2 percent white, and only 1.6 percent black.

By comparison, the U.S. population is 77.1 percent white and 12.9 percent black, according to the U.S. Census Bureau—making the Occupy Wall Street movement disproportionately white.

The infographic, depicted below, caused instant controversy when it was shared among Occupy Wall Street organizers. One activist reacted: “81% white protestors—and you actually made a flyer proudly advertising this lie, in a multicultural city like NYC? You must be crazy and blind.”

She later accused Schultz of “insidious racism” and “white supremacy,” and demanded “serious mediation” from organizers on the Safer Spaces working group, the internal security apparatus of Occupy Wall Street.

that's not how it started at all...lower interest rates meant more lower-middle class workers and families could afford home loans and would thus be able to consistently return payments without being forced to declare bankruptcy, which is actually a pretty smart idea...but when bush came in and fucked everything up, the banks started reeling in the cash and soon people were going broke right and left
meanwhile, big business and the banking industry were basically using wallstreet to make money from nothing (derivatives, hedge funds), and using corporate influence to either lower or completely bypassing taxes and corporate lending costs
combined with gigantic inefficiencies and unsustainable demands in many industrial areas, a lot of companies either outsourced labour or flat out failed...this is where the first (bush sponsored) bailout came in...and then nothing changed
then we had the recession, you'd think people would learn, but no, corporations still rule the right wing and a fair amount of the left wing in government, and obama's just doing the best he can with a bad situation

In Realworldia, lower interest rates equates to less money paid for the house which causes people to buy housing that is massively out of their income range that they can barely afford. This works for a while until there's a hiccup in a Realworldian's life and he's unable to work, either due to injury or market forces. To do this, the Federal Reserve artificially lowered interest rates whilst State-sponsored entities Fannie and Freddie artificially expanded credit, in the process inflating a housing boom. Artificially low interest rates and credit expansion mask the real risks of investment and drive unsustainable bubbles of Mal-Investment that eventually require liquidation.

Credit expansion doesn't just convince entrepeneurs and consumers alike that they have more resources than what they do and stimulate recklessness, it also distorts prices and masks economic information so that risky and unsustainable business deals LOOK productive even to the most responsible entrepeneurs. The apparatus that was watching the whole thing didn't just contribute to the mess, it was one of the primary causes of it.

Essentially, the economic housing bubble was created by the state, and certain banks affiliated with and then later bailed out by the state happened to make some money by trading around the poisoned investments. Social democrats prefer to ignore the first part of this, instead focusing on what the banks did, which they can loosely associate with capitalism and use as justification for giving the state even more power than it already has, which will just create more bubbles, more crises, and more bankers making astronomical profits at the taxpayers' expense.

And it all comes down to the government, and to the Fed.

I guess being asked to go to the back of the line because of the color of your skin couldn't be construed to be any worse than being asked to go to the back of the bus because of the color of your skin.

You seem to think this country is 1910s Russia, where the Tzars kept a strict ban on weapons throughout the country since they knew the serfs would rise up given the chance (which they did, at a great human cost because of that lack). You may be able to take faggot no-gun cities like New York, half of them are communists anyway, but try taking PA, NJ, and even upper-state NY. Every town will be a Stalingrad, every home a fortress. The guns we all keep to shoot nigger thieves are just as good at shooting communists, and we'll have the high ground.

    >A RACIST: A racist is one who is both privileged and socialized on the basis of race by a white supremacist (racist) system. The term applies to all white people (i.e., people of European descent) living in the United States, regardless of class, gender, religion, culture or sexuality. By this definition, people of color cannot be racists, because as peoples within the system, they do not have the power to back up their prejudices, hostilities, or acts of discrimination.

    >REVERSE RACISM: A term created and used by white people to deny their white privilege. Those in denial use the term reverse racism to refer to hostile behavior by people of color toward whites, and to affirmative action policies, which allegedly give ‘preferential treatment’ to people of color over whites. In the US, there is no such thing as ‘reverse racism.'

    >A NON-RACIST: A non-term. The term was created by whites to deny responsibility for systemic racism, to maintain an aura of innocence in the face of racial oppression, and to shift responsibility for that oppression from whites to people of color (called “blaming the victim”). Responsibility for perpetuating and legitimizing a racist system rests both on those who actively maintain it, and on those who refuse to challenge it. Silence is consent.

The real problem with this Occupy Wallstreet movement is that since TARP, banks have been the Government's bitch. Its like doing a mass protest against a modern Monarch. They maybe rich and party with powerful, but they don't have much power anymore.
